The entire morning Madison stayed in her room. I blamed myself for her sudden change of mood.
I hurriedly searched through the book for more pictures of my kind but there were only two pictures. My mom in her human form and her wolf form. The book was mostly words, sadly, words I cannot read for I was illiterate.
I heard Madison's door close. I quickly threw the book back into the box and took up the small book she was using to teach me the alphabet before she could spot me with the book her ex-mate wrote about my kind.
My head lifted from the picture alphabetical book as if I was looking through it as I heard her enter the living room.
She smiled at me.
I returned her smile.
"I'm sorry, I have gotten you all excited to start reading, and then my painful past ruin things for you," she apologized.
"It's okay," I retorted. "Are you feeling much better now to start teaching me again?" I asked.
I was very eager to learn how to read now. I needed to know more about my kind. That book may be able to help me.
A sad look appeared on Madison's face.
"Did I say something wrong?" I asked hating I was allowing her to feel sad again.
She shook her head instructing me, no.
I was glad I wasn't.
"Rain," she called as she came over to me and sat down.
My eyes never left her wondering what she was about to say.
"I was eager to teach you this morning but after what had happened let us wait until the next day and I promise I will start teaching you then," she said.
My head moved away from hers and I nodded sadly.
I truly wanted to learn to start reading quickly. I guess I'll have to wait.
"How about I make your favourite, fry sausage for lunch to cheer you up?" one of Madison's arms went around my shoulder.
"Sure," I gave her a forced smile.
"I'll get right to it after I've gotten rid of this box of books," said Madison.
I watched her as she took the box with the book of my kind except for the small alphabetical book and went upstairs.
I secretly watched her as she did to see which room she was placing the box in.
I smiled discovering where.
I heard a knock on the front door allowing my stare to return downstairs.
Madison heard it as well and was hurrying down the stairs. I watched her as she opened the door curiously to know who it was.
My curiosity went to disappointment as she opened the door seeing who it was. It was Alpha Decaulion in his human form standing at the door. As his blood-red eyes met mine, I immediately returned to the living room and took up the small booklet.
"A is for apple," I said, recollecting the first letter of the alphabet, Madison had taught me.
The second letter I didn't know it, but the picture I knew.
"Book," I said out loud with a bright smile, feeling proud of myself.
"I planned on teaching her to read," I heard Madison from the living room informing the alpha overhearing me in the room.
I paused what I was doing, waiting for the cold-blooded alpha reply.
I wasn't surprised I heard nothing but a question from Madison.
"I'm going to prepare lunch, would you like to stay for some?" Madison asked. "I'm cooking Rain's favorite, fried sausage."
My eyes rolled loathing that Madison included me in the conversation with the evil alpha.
"No, I'm good," I heard the heartless alpha retort.
A smile appeared on my face, happy he was not going to stay for lunch. He would have ruined it.
"I could prepare something else for you if you don't like sausages," Madison suggested.
My eyes again rolled. Quit trying to get him to stay for lunch, Madison, I thought angrily.
"No, that's fine. I'm just here to see if everything is fine with you both," said the alpha.
"Yes," I heard Madison.
"Good," he retorted. "I'll see you at the event this evening," said the alpha ready to leave.
"Oh my gosh," Madison said surprisingly. "I totally forget about it."
"We'll both be there."
I was now curious about the event Madison and the alpha were talking about when Madison had informed him I would be there as well.
"Wait," Madison stopped the alpha.
"Have you forsaken your search for Red since what happened?" I heard her ask the alpha.
Since what had happened? I repeated curiously in my mind.
"It will be no point doing so anymore since no were-witch is able to help me get back to her. They all kept informing me that the ones who could help or no more," I heard the alpha within his voice he sounded disappointed.
"Who?" asked Madison.
"The River Pack Luna."
I stood up surprised at what the alpha had said.
Their conversation ended and I heard the door locked.
How could my mom help him? I thought.
At that moment I realized that my life depended on that book. Madison will have to teach me how to read quickly.
I heard Madison sauntering into the living room. I sat down and pretended as if I was learning the letters.
"I heard you trying to learn the letter B for yourself," she said with a smile.
"B is for Book," I said returning a smile, learning the second letter of the alphabet.
"That's good," Madison cheered me.
She walked towards me and sat beside me.
"I forget today was the day of the found, unfound, and the lost," said Madison.
I looked at her eager to know what she was talking about.
"Today is the day we celebrate those who found their mates, the ones who are still searching, and the ones who are grieving their lost mate and loves ones," Madison ended sadly. "It's celebrated at the end of the month after the mating ceremony."
"You could accompany me in laying something that your mom loved while she was alive to commemorate her," said Madison.
I nodded melancholy.
Madison sadly touched me and left.

Lunch was pretty quiet since I was alone in the dining room eating, the event that will be taking place this evening seemed to be affecting Madison, recollecting the death of her ex-mate, my dad, Thomas Harpen.
Madison had been outside sitting silently on the porch, alone.
"Rain, I'm going to go get some rest until it's time to prepare dinner before we go to the event," said Madison.
I nodded and watched her as she left.
Seeing the picture of my mom, I wanted to see her again. I put away the plate after I was through and I quietly went upstairs and went into the room Madison had placed the box. I searched into it. I was surprised I didn't find it. I searched again believing I had somehow missed it in the box. Still, it was not there.
Where could it be? I thought as my head turned to a small window in the room.
I saw smoke. I ran towards it and there I saw the book being burned in a small fire.
I quickly ran outside but it was too late when I got there. The entire book was consumed by fire.
Madison had burned the book. I cried.
How will I ever learn about my pack and my mom anymore?
