"Rain, Rain," I heard Madison call.
I looked at her sitting opposite me around the dining table.
"Didn't you want fry sausage as well for your dinner since you love it?" she asked
I gazed at her with a heavy pain in my heart. I wanted to be mad at her for burning the book that was the closest thing I had about my pack and learn about them but she destroyed it because my mom and her ex, my dad had fallen in love. I couldn't express my anger to her, she would be suspicious of my reaction to that book and my secret could be out in the open.
"Rain, Rain," Madison again called seeing I wasn't answering her.
"Fry sausage is fine," I finally retorted and took a bite at the sausage.
Madison smiled at me and continued to eat.
Dinner was through, she took the dishes and went into the kitchen.
I went upstairs and lay in bed.
I was crushed the book was no more and my only hope of learning about my kind was gone. Every page was consumed by the fire.
There was no point in me learning to read anymore. I had lost every desire to do so.
A knock on the door of my room, allowed me to sit up.
Madison was entering my room. My blood was boiling with anger as I watched her.
"You were a bit quiet during dinner time. I have to ask are you okay?" said Madison.
I took a deep breath to calm myself before answering her. I feared my tone would allow her to know I was angry, very.
"I'm fine," I lied.
She came and sat next to me and I couldn't help jumping from the bed before her body could brush against mine.
She was surprised at my action.
"Are you still angry at me because of what I said about The Luna of The River pack?" she asked assuming it was so.
Both hands tighten into a fist and I held them behind me, trying hard to hide my anger.
I so badly wanted to scream and yell at her.
"No, I just hate the alpha coming here," I said.
It was not a lie, I did but at the moment it was not the case.
How could I tell her I was angry that she destroyed the only information I could learn about my pack and the picture of my mom? the picture was the first I saw my mom. It was the closest thing I have to her and I'll never see it again.
Tears formed in my eyes and I began to cry.
Madison ran to hug me.
"I'll tell him to stay from my house for a while since his presence is affecting you so much," Madison's arms went tighter around me.
I tried returning her hug but was hard to do so now.
"If you're not in the mood to attend the event this evening, I understand," said Madison.
"No, I want to," I told her.
It would be better that way, staying with her alone in the house after what she had done. I was miserable. It would be good to be out of the house for some time, perhaps my mood would somehow lighten. Also, I was curious about the strange event.
In preparation for the event, Madison and I wore the same color, purple like the color of a grape. She informed me, it was the color worn for wolves honoring their lost ones.
Madison was honoring the loss of her daughter and not my father. I on the other hand was commemorating not only my parent and grandmother but the entire pack, River Pack.
I wished I had never attended the event if I had known it would be in the alpha's backyard. I would never have gone. My anger kept building instead of reducing.
I was soon surprised to see a number of wolves, surrounding a large oak tree.
"This tree has been in our family for 1000 years," Madison informed me as we stopped at the back of the crowd.
I looked at her with interest and back to the tree. I was surprised at how old the tree was. Though it looked ancient and a bit scary. I would have never guessed how long it has been here.
My eyes slowly went from the tree and I began to observe the many wolves that were there. Some were attired in purple like mine but others didn't.
"What is red and blue for?" I asked Madison eagerly to know what they were celebrating. I knew the event was for the lost and also for found and the unfound but I couldn't determine which color was for those.
"Red is for, the found, the ones who were lucky to find their mate during the full moon, and blue is for, the unfound, the ones who didn't and are still searching."
Alaric eyes met mine simultaneously in the crowd and I realized he was wearing a blue top. We weren't lucky to find our mates as well, I reckoned. He smiled at me and immediately I looked away from him, feeling shy.
Every ounce of anger eventually went away when I saw Madison hold close to her a small stuffed toy of a brown wolf, she had planned to lay beside the tree in memory of her daughter.
My head lowered sadly, I didn't have anything to honor the death of my loved ones and my pack. I was starting to question why I was even there.
"Are you okay, Rain?" Madison touched me seeing I was now in a down moment.
"I don't have anything to lay beside the oak tree," I said sadly.
"It's okay," she retorted.
My head raised to her.
"Let's go purchase something that you believe your mother would have loved," said Madison.
A large smile appeared on my face and I hurriedly followed her.
A lady was selling strange objects I wasn't quite familiar with at the front of the alpha's home. I wished I didn't go. As Madison and I stood before the small stall of the lady I saw the alpha leaving the house. He paused as he spotted us. He wasn't wearing any of the colors, instead, he was wearing black. My eyes lowered from the stall as Madison greeted him and I began to search for what I could place beside the tree.
I could barely find anything I needed, nothing speak to me that I believe my loved ones and my pack would have loved.
I was starting to become frustrated there was nothing I could find.
I walked from the stall, disappointed. Madison followed me.
"I can't find anything I like," I muttered.
My eyes suddenly caught a tiny droplet of water on the small leave and I immediately took it up, recollecting that my mom loved the rain.
"Can I have a cup to put it in?" I hurriedly returned to the lady by the stall.
She quickly gave me a very small glass container. It wasn't a cup but it still was useful. I smiled as I observed the leaf with the droplet of water in the container.
Madison paid for the item and we returned to the tree.
"Can you tell me what it symbolizes for your mom?" Madison asked curiously as she stared at me strangely.
"My mom loved the rain," I told her with a smile.
Though I didn't have something that too went along for my entire pack at least I had something.
When Madison and I had gotten back to the tree, the event had begun. I was surprised to see more wolves.
Madison mentioned to me that wolves from other packs that are close to the alpha's family come as well to celebrate.
The event was a mixture of feeling as a she-wolf who spoke before the crowd spoke of those who found love, those who didn't, and those who were grieving over a loss and how they're was hope for those who haven't found happiness as yet.
"As long as there was still life within you there's still hope for you to find the greatest love of all," she concluded.
A young couple that seemed like new lovers before me and Madison kissed at the end of her speech. I observed them sadly. I couldn't help admiring the female she looked so fresh and happy without having a dark past like mine.
"Madison," I called.
Madison looked at me.
"Will my mate take me after what happened to me?" I asked her.
I recollected that Madison said that a she-wolf's first time is with their mate. My first time was taken from me.
"I'm sure he will," Madison stretched her arms hugging me.
"Are you sure he won't see me as a ruined she-wolf?" I had to ask, making sure.
As my head went to her shoulder, the alpha I didn't realize was standing behind us. Our eyes met.
"He will cherish you," Madison told me.
My eyes lowered sadly from his.
