Between Four of Us

Chapter 77

Ch. 77 / 250 Jun 22, 2025

The day dawned bright and clear, and Camille was buzzing with excitement. Today, she, Noah, Leo, and Matthew were heading out to shop for the upcoming baby gender reveal, an event she’d been looking forward to for weeks. The three brothers were just as enthusiastic as she was, each of them having weighed in on decorations, color schemes, and every other detail of the celebration. She could feel their excitement, and it filled her with gratitude. Together, they were creating a family she could already feel surrounding her with love and support.

As they arrived at the baby store, Camille laughed at the sight of Leo and Matthew immediately splitting off to explore, each darting toward different displays with wide eyes and matching grins. Noah lingered by her side, his hand resting protectively on her shoulder as they followed the brothers through the aisles.

“Look at this!” Leo called, waving a tiny onesie that read, Future Trouble Maker. He turned to Camille with a mischievous grin. “I’m buying this one, no matter what you say. This kid’s gonna need a bit of a rebellious streak, don’t you think?”

Camille rolled her eyes, laughing. “Leo, I have no doubt you’ll be leading the way in that department.”

Matthew came over, holding a soft, plush blanket. “And then they’ll need this for when they’re ready to calm down after Leo’s chaos,” he added, throwing a playful glance at his brother.

Noah chuckled, his eyes shining with amusement as he looked from one brother to the other. “Seems like this baby is going to have the best of both worlds—fun and calm, all in the same family.”

Camille smiled, feeling her heart swell as she imagined the future they were all building together. She could hardly believe how blessed she was to have this level of support and love around her child, even before they were born.

As they wandered through the aisles, each of them picking out items they thought the baby might need, a familiar voice interrupted their laughter, cold and sharp.

“Well, isn’t this cozy?”

Camille turned to see Ava, an old acquaintance who was a former friend of Noah’s—and one she knew had always harbored feelings for him. Ava’s gaze was fixed on Camille with barely concealed jealousy, her arms crossed as she approached, her expression tight and cold.

“Ava,” Noah said, his voice steady but guarded. “I didn’t expect to see you here.”

Ava’s eyes narrowed, flicking between Noah and Camille before settling on Camille with a scowl. “I can’t believe this is real,” she said, her tone dripping with disdain. “You’re really going through with all of this? The big happy family?”

Camille’s face flushed, but she kept her voice calm. “Yes, Ava. We are.”

Ava scoffed, looking her up and down with a contemptuous sneer. “And you think you’re up for this, Camille? Being a mother? Raising Noah’s child?”

Leo stepped forward, his jaw tight as he glanced at Ava. “Watch it, Ava. You don’t get to come in here and insult Camille like that.”

Ava shrugged, unfazed. “Oh, come on, Leo. I’m just speaking the truth. I mean, really, Noah—” she turned back to him, her expression softening as she tried to appeal to him directly, “are you sure this is what you want? I mean, you and I… we had something real. And now you’re just going to throw it away for… this?”

Noah’s face hardened, his gaze unwavering as he looked at Ava. “Ava, whatever you and I might have had in the past, it’s over. Camille is my family. She’s the mother of my child, and we’re building a life together—a life that doesn’t include you.”

Ava’s expression wavered, a flash of hurt crossing her face before she quickly masked it with a sneer. “Oh, really? So, you’re just going to settle for this happy little picture? Don’t forget, Noah, you’re the one who used to say you’d never tie yourself down, that you had bigger plans. And now… this?” She gestured toward Camille with a dismissive wave of her hand.

Camille’s patience began to wear thin, but she held herself back, unwilling to stoop to Ava’s level. However, she couldn’t ignore the sting in Ava’s words, the clear attempt to undermine the joy she and Noah had found together.

Matthew stepped in, his voice firm and calm. “Ava, I think it’s time for you to go. Noah’s made his choice, and it’s time for you to respect that.”

Ava’s eyes flashed with indignation. “I don’t need to take orders from you, Matthew,” she snapped, though her voice wavered slightly. “This has nothing to do with you.”

“Actually, it does,” Leo interjected, stepping beside Matthew with a resolute expression. “You’re here, harassing Camille, insulting her in a public place, and you’re trying to make Noah question his choices. We’re not going to let you do that. Not here, and not ever.”

Ava laughed, a bitter sound. “So, now it’s all three of you against me? How predictable.” She glanced back at Noah, her gaze pleading but still laced with anger. “Noah, don’t you see what’s happening? You’re losing yourself in all of this. You used to be ambitious, strong, independent. And now… you’re just part of their little family project.”

Noah’s eyes softened, but his voice remained firm. “Ava, this is the life I want. This isn’t about losing myself. It’s about building something meaningful. I’m happy with Camille, and I’m excited to be a father. Nothing you say is going to change that.”

Ava’s face twisted with a mix of hurt and anger, her shoulders slumping slightly as she realized she was truly losing him. She looked from Noah to Camille, bitterness filling her eyes. “Fine. You all deserve each other,” she spat, turning on her heel and storming out of the store.

The moment she was gone, Camille let out a shaky breath, her emotions swirling. Noah turned to her, placing a gentle hand on her arm. “Camille, I’m so sorry. You didn’t deserve any of that.”

Camille shook her head, summoning a small smile. “It’s okay, Noah. I knew Ava had feelings for you. I just didn’t expect her to be so… direct.”

Leo huffed, crossing his arms with a look of annoyance. “I’ll never understand people like her. It’s like she can’t handle seeing someone else happy.”

Matthew nodded, his expression still tense. “Camille, if she causes any more trouble, you let us know, okay? We’re not going to let anyone threaten this family we’re building.”

Camille’s heart swelled at their support, and she felt a surge of gratitude for each of them. “Thank you, all of you. I feel lucky to have you by my side.”

Noah smiled, squeezing her hand. “You’re not just lucky, Camille. You’re family. And nothing—especially not Ava—is going to come between us.”

They continued their shopping, the tension from Ava’s confrontation fading as they found joy in each item they picked out for the baby. Camille and Noah worked together to select soft blankets and tiny outfits, while Leo and Matthew debated over which toys and decorations would be best for the nursery.

At one point, Leo held up a pair of adorable baby shoes, his face lighting up. “Look at these! Aren’t they perfect?”

Camille laughed, nodding. “They are. I think we’ve officially found the first pair of shoes for the baby.”

Matthew grinned, placing a small teddy bear in the cart. “And this little guy here will be the first stuffed animal. I think it’s only fitting.”

By the time they left the store, the cart was filled with baby essentials and small touches that felt personal and meaningful. Camille’s heart was full, the earlier tension completely replaced by the love and excitement she felt surrounded by her family.

As they arrived home, they unloaded the bags, setting everything in the living room to sort through and organize. Camille watched with a smile as the brothers chatted about the baby shower plans, each of them equally enthusiastic about making it special.

Settling onto the couch with a sigh of contentment, Camille looked around, feeling more at peace than she had in a long time. The encounter with Ava was already fading from her mind, replaced by the warmth of this moment.

Noah joined her on the couch, wrapping an arm around her shoulders. “I know today wasn’t exactly what we planned, but I’m so glad we did this.”

Camille leaned into him, a soft smile on her face. “Me too. It just made everything feel more real, you know? Like… we’re really doing this.”

Leo dropped onto the couch beside them, slinging an arm over the back. “Of course we are! This baby is going to have the most loving, protective family in the world.”

Matthew joined them, nodding in agreement. “And a family that’s ready to take on anyone who tries to get in the way,” he added, a glint of humor in his eyes.

Camille laughed, feeling the love and loyalty that bound them all together. “Thank you. I can’t say it enough, but I really mean it. Thank you for standing by me and for making this dream come to life.”

Noah brushed a gentle kiss against her temple, his voice filled with quiet conviction. “We’re in this together, Camille. Always.”
