Between Four of Us

Chapter 68

Ch. 68 / 250 Jun 22, 2025

The days following Camille’s discovery were a whirlwind of emotions. Her life, which had felt so dark and empty since Noah’s death, now held a new kind of light. The news of her pregnancy, unexpected and overwhelming, had filled the void with a sense of purpose and hope. Yet, every step she took was tinged with bittersweet memories of Noah, and she couldn’t help but wish he were here to experience this journey with her.

Leo and Matthew had been by her side since the moment she told them, offering unwavering support and encouragement. They’d gone out of their way to make sure she didn’t feel alone, accompanying her to every appointment and filling her days with as much laughter and comfort as they could. She could see in their eyes that they were still grieving too, yet they had taken on the role of protectors once more, this time for her and the life she carried.

On the day of her first ultrasound, Camille sat nervously in the waiting room, her fingers laced together tightly. She glanced at the clock on the wall, counting the minutes until her name would be called. Matthew sat beside her, his hand resting gently on her shoulder, while Leo was on her other side, tapping his knee in a rhythm that betrayed his own nerves.

“You ready for this?” Leo asked, his usual playful tone softened by sincerity.

Camille nodded, a small smile forming despite her anxiousness. “As ready as I’ll ever be. It all feels so surreal.”

Matthew squeezed her shoulder reassuringly. “You’re going to be an amazing mom, Camille. Noah would be so proud of you.”

Her heart swelled at the words, and she felt tears prick at the corners of her eyes. She hadn’t expected this day to be so emotional, but knowing she was carrying a part of Noah with her was both beautiful and heartbreaking.

When her name was called, Leo and Matthew rose alongside her, each of them giving her an encouraging nod as they walked with her to the examination room. The technician greeted them warmly and helped Camille settle onto the examination table, explaining the process as she prepared for the ultrasound.

As the technician spread the cool gel over her stomach and the screen flickered to life, Camille held her breath, her eyes fixed on the monitor. A moment later, a small shape appeared, tiny and curled, and her heart leapt at the sight. This was her child. Her and Noah’s child.

“That’s your baby,” the technician said softly, pointing to the small figure on the screen. “Everything looks perfect.”

Camille felt tears stream down her face as she watched the tiny heartbeat flickering on the screen, strong and steady. It was as if a part of Noah’s spirit was right there, alive and growing. The reality of it finally hit her, filling her with a mixture of joy, awe, and a pang of sorrow that he wasn’t here to witness this miracle with her.

“Wow,” Leo whispered, his voice filled with wonder. “That’s incredible.”

Matthew remained silent, his gaze fixed on the screen, his expression a mixture of warmth and quiet intensity. He reached out, taking Camille’s hand, his fingers steadying hers. She could feel the strength and reassurance he offered, grounding her in the overwhelming moment.

As they left the clinic, the sun was shining brightly, casting a warm glow over the world around them. Camille felt lighter, filled with a strange peace she hadn’t known since losing Noah. This child was a piece of him, a reminder of their love, and she knew she was ready to face whatever lay ahead.

Later that evening, as they sat together in the living room, Camille looked over at Leo and Matthew, her heart swelling with gratitude for everything they had done for her. They were her family, her support, and she knew she wouldn’t have made it this far without them.

But as the conversation drifted, she noticed a tension in the air, a silent exchange between Leo and Matthew that hadn’t been there before. Matthew cleared his throat, his gaze steady as he looked at her.

“Camille,” he began, his voice serious, “there’s something I’ve been thinking about.”

She looked at him, sensing the weight of his words. “What is it, Matthew?”

He hesitated, glancing briefly at Leo before focusing on her. “I know this baby is a part of Noah, a part of you… and I also know how much you’re going to need support. I’ve been by your side for a long time, and I want to be there for you and this child. More than just an uncle or a friend. I’d like to… I’d like to be a father to this baby.”

Camille’s eyes widened, her heart pounding as she took in his words. The sincerity in his gaze left no doubt about his intentions—he was offering himself as a stable, loving figure in her life and the life of her child, a commitment that went beyond friendship or duty.

Before she could respond, Leo leaned forward, his expression intense. “Camille, I feel the same way. I know Noah was my brother, and I can never replace him. But I care about you, deeply. And this baby… I’d be honored to be a part of their life too, as more than just the ‘fun uncle.’”

Camille looked between the two of them, her mind racing as she tried to process their words. Both Matthew and Leo were offering her something she hadn’t dared to hope for—a family, a future filled with love and support. She could see the love in their eyes, the quiet longing each of them held for something real and lasting with her and the child she was carrying.

“Both of you?” she whispered, her voice barely audible. “You’re both willing to…?”

Matthew nodded, his gaze unwavering. “We both want to be there for you, Camille. To give this baby the family they deserve. But ultimately, it’s your choice. We’ll respect whatever you decide.”

Leo placed a hand on hers, his usual lighthearted demeanor replaced by a deep sincerity. “We want you to feel supported, Camille. And if you choose one of us, the other will still be there, right by your side. We’re a family, no matter what.”

Camille felt her heart swell, overwhelmed by the love and loyalty they were showing her. It was a decision she hadn’t expected to face, and her emotions warred within her as she thought of both men who had been by her side through so much. They each held a unique place in her heart, and the thought of choosing felt both thrilling and heart-wrenching.

“I… I don’t know what to say,” she murmured, tears welling up in her eyes. “You’ve both been so incredible to me. I don’t think I can do this without either of you.”

Matthew’s hand squeezed hers reassuringly. “Take your time, Camille. We’re not going anywhere.”

Leo smiled softly, brushing a tear from her cheek. “You don’t have to decide now. Just know we’re here, every step of the way.”

As the night wore on, Camille sat between them, feeling a profound sense of peace and comfort. She knew that, no matter what decision she made, she and her child would be surrounded by love.
