Between Four of Us

Chapter 82

Ch. 82 / 250 Jun 22, 2025

The nightmares wouldn’t stop. Every night, Camille found herself drifting into an endless cycle of darkness and terror. The scenes varied, but the feeling was always the same—a suffocating fear, a sense that something was lurking just beyond her sight, waiting for her to let her guard down. She would wake up gasping, drenched in cold sweat, her heart pounding so hard she could hear it echo in the quiet of the room.

Noah, Leo, and Matthew grew increasingly worried. They’d comfort her each time she woke, whispering reassurances, holding her close, and doing everything they could to bring her peace. But the nightmares continued, relentless and haunting, eroding her sense of safety. She was exhausted, her mind and body on edge, and even their comforting words couldn’t banish the lingering dread that clung to her.

One evening, after dinner, as they settled in the living room, Camille felt a new wave of unease settle over her. She tried to ignore it, to stay focused on the warmth of Noah’s arm around her, the quiet murmur of Matthew and Leo’s conversation, but the feeling gnawed at her, sharper than before.

“You look tense,” Noah murmured, noticing her silence. He gently rubbed her back, his voice soft. “Another bad dream?”

Camille nodded, her hand resting protectively on her belly. “It’s hard to explain. It’s not just the dreams. It’s this… this feeling I get. Like something’s here. I don’t know if it’s just in my head or if it’s real.”

Leo leaned forward, his eyes filled with concern. “Do you think it’s related to everything we’ve been through? Maybe your mind is just working through the stress?”

She hesitated, then shook her head. “Maybe. But this feels different. Like it’s not just a memory or a fear. It’s almost like… a presence.” She shivered, not even fully understanding what she was trying to explain.

Matthew placed a hand on her shoulder, his expression serious. “Camille, you’re safe here. We’ve taken every precaution. No one is getting in without us knowing.”

She nodded, though her heart was still uneasy. “I know. I keep telling myself that. But it’s like the nightmares won’t let me believe it.”

They spent the next hour talking, trying to distract her, but Camille felt her nerves fraying, a chill prickling her skin despite the warmth of the room. She tried to push away the feeling, to convince herself it was just anxiety. But then, as she was about to relax, the lights flickered, and the room plunged into sudden darkness.

Camille’s heart seized in her chest, and she let out a terrified scream, clutching Noah’s arm as panic surged through her. The house was silent, the darkness heavy and unnerving. She could barely see a thing, the room shrouded in shadows that seemed to press closer around her.

“It’s okay, Camille. I’m right here,” Noah said immediately, his voice soothing despite the tension in his tone. He tightened his hold on her, his other hand reaching out to calm her. “Probably just a power surge.”

But Camille couldn’t shake the fear that gripped her. As her eyes adjusted, she thought she saw something—a figure, vague and indistinct, lurking just beyond the edge of the room. It was only there for a second, but her heart leapt, her pulse racing as she stared into the shadows.

“There! Did you see that?” she whispered, her voice shaking as she pointed toward the corner of the room.

Leo and Matthew exchanged glances, their postures immediately tense. Leo turned on his phone’s flashlight, casting a dim glow across the space, while Matthew moved toward the corner she’d pointed at, carefully examining the shadows.

“There’s nothing here, Camille,” Matthew said gently, his tone calm but firm. “It’s okay. It was just the power cutting out.”

Camille wanted to believe him, but the image lingered in her mind—a shadowy figure, watching her. It had felt so real, too real to be just a trick of her mind. Her heart continued to pound as the seconds stretched on, her hand clinging to Noah’s as if he were the only thing keeping her grounded.

Just then, the lights flickered back on, flooding the room with brightness and banishing the shadows that had seemed so ominous. Camille blinked, squinting against the sudden light, her breathing still shallow.

“It’s back,” Leo said, relief evident in his voice. He turned off his flashlight and approached Camille, concern written across his face. “Are you alright?”

She nodded, though her hands were still trembling. “I—I don’t know. I thought I saw something. In the corner, there was… someone watching me.”

Noah wrapped his arm around her shoulders, pulling her close as he spoke softly. “It’s okay, Camille. There was no one there. It was just the dark playing tricks.”

Matthew knelt beside her, his expression reassuring. “It’s not uncommon to see things in the dark, especially when you’re already on edge. Your mind is processing a lot. It can make shadows seem like more than they are.”

Camille swallowed, nodding, though she couldn’t shake the cold feeling that lingered. “Maybe you’re right. It’s just… it felt so real. Like there was something there.”

Leo glanced at the window, then back at her, his voice gentle. “We’ll double-check the locks and the security system, just to be safe. But you’re surrounded, Camille. Nothing is getting past us.”

Camille managed a weak smile, touched by their determination. “Thank you. I don’t know what I’d do without you all.”

Noah gave her a comforting squeeze. “You don’t have to worry about that. We’re here for you, through all of it.”

They spent the next few minutes checking every room, every window and door, ensuring the house was secure. Despite their assurances, Camille’s nerves remained frayed, and the memory of the shadow she’d seen wouldn’t leave her mind. She tried to shake it off, telling herself it was just her imagination, but a nagging feeling told her there was more to it.

Once everything was checked, they returned to the living room, where Matthew made her a cup of tea and Leo draped a blanket over her shoulders.

“Try to relax,” Matthew said gently, handing her the mug. “You’ve been under a lot of stress. Just take it one day at a time.”
