Chapter 101 Back From the Dead

Ch. 101 / 250 Jun 22, 2025

She couldn’t speak. Her knees buckled under the weight of shock as her gaze remained riveted on the figure emerging from the shadows. The room seemed to shrink, the noise of murmured conversations fading into a low hum. He stepped closer, the soft glow of the chandelier catching his face, and Camille’s heart ceased its rhythm for an agonizing moment.

“No,” she whispered, her voice trembling, barely audible over the blood pounding in her ears.

Noah’s warm hand pressed lightly against her arm, his concern cutting through the fog of her disorientation. “What’s wrong?” he asked, his tone low but urgent. His gaze followed hers to the figure at the back of the room. “Who is that?”

Her throat constricted, each word an effort to push past the growing lump of panic. “It’s Conrad,” she said, her voice hollow, as though the name itself carried a weight that threatened to crush her.

Noah’s brows furrowed in confusion as he shifted his stance, his hand lingering on her arm. “Conrad? Who’s Conrad?”

Camille forced herself to speak, her words emerging brittle and uneven. “My uncle.”

Noah’s confusion deepened, his expression a mix of concern and disbelief. “Your uncle? I thought you said he—”

“Was dead,” she interjected, her voice sharp and frayed at the edges. Her breath hitched as she whispered, “I thought so too.”

The murmurs rippled through the gathering like a sudden gust of wind, quiet at first but growing louder as Conrad continued his deliberate approach. He carried himself with an unsettling confidence, his strides even and measured, the room parting for him as though commanded by an invisible force. Faces turned toward him, their expressions a mixture of puzzlement and unease. The chatter swelled into hushed tones, words exchanged quickly as the air thickened with questions no one dared ask aloud.

Camille’s legs refused to obey her. She was rooted to the spot, her breaths shallow and fast. The world around her blurred at the edges, all of it narrowing to the man walking steadily toward the altar. Conrad, the ghost of her past, now shockingly flesh and bone.

“What’s going on?” Noah asked again, his voice cutting through her spiral of panic. He leaned closer, his words low but firm. “Camille, you need to tell me what’s happening.”

She shook her head violently, unable to form a coherent response, her thoughts a chaotic whirlpool. Conrad had been gone—declared dead after a boating accident nearly a decade ago. His body was never recovered, but everyone, including Camille, had mourned and moved on. Or at least tried to.

But now he was here. Alive. Real. And staring directly at her, his expression unreadable, his dark eyes piercing through the distance between them.

Conrad stopped a few feet from the altar, his commanding presence silencing the last of the murmurs. He was older, the lines etched on his face speaking of hardships and time, yet the same air of quiet authority surrounded him, amplified by the years that had passed. He swept his gaze across the room, briefly acknowledging the growing tension before locking eyes with Camille.

“Hello, Camille,” he said, his voice low and even, but with an edge that sent a shiver down her spine. It was both familiar and alien, the voice of a man she had once trusted implicitly but who now seemed like a stranger cloaked in shadows.

Her lips trembled as she shook her head, words spilling out in a disjointed plea. “No. You’re not supposed to be here. You’re not supposed to be alive.”

Conrad’s expression didn’t falter, his gaze unwavering. “And yet, here I am.”
