Between Four of Us

Chapter 72

Ch. 72 / 250 Jun 22, 2025

The following morning, Camille woke to a quiet house, the soft morning light filtering through her curtains. Leo and Matthew had stayed overnight, true to their word, sleeping on the couches to keep a watchful eye on her and the house. Despite their presence and the security measures they had taken, an uneasy feeling lingered in her heart. The voice on the phone had been haunting her dreams, and no matter how much she tried to reassure herself, the memory of that chilling call wouldn’t leave her.

She got out of bed, stretching and trying to shake off the sense of dread. She moved quietly to the kitchen to start coffee before the others woke. But as she entered the room, she stopped in her tracks, her stomach twisting at the sight before her.

On the kitchen table, lying motionless, was a small, dead mouse. Its tiny body was positioned deliberately, as if it had been left there intentionally. Next to it was a scrap of paper, the words scrawled hastily in ink: This is just the beginning. The baby isn’t safe.

Camille’s hand flew to her mouth, her heartbeat thundering in her ears. She backed away, her breath coming in shallow gasps. The image of the dead mouse and the menacing note sent chills down her spine, and fear clawed at her, raw and unrelenting. Whoever had made that call wasn’t finished—they were here, watching her, and they were willing to go to disturbing lengths to send their message.

Hearing the faint sound of her gasp, Leo came into the kitchen, rubbing his eyes as he yawned. His expression quickly changed when he saw her standing there, pale and trembling.

“Camille?” he asked, concern filling his voice as he stepped closer. His gaze shifted to the table, and his eyes widened in shock. “What… what is this?”

She shook her head, unable to speak, still staring at the grotesque display on the table. A moment later, Matthew entered, stopping short as he took in the scene.

“Who would do this?” he demanded, his jaw tightening as he moved closer to inspect the note. His voice was low and steady, but Camille could sense the fury simmering beneath his calm exterior.

Leo reached out, placing a comforting hand on her shoulder. “Camille, did you see anyone? Did you hear anything last night?”

She shook her head, her voice barely a whisper. “No. I didn’t hear anything. I… I don’t understand how they got in.”

Matthew’s expression hardened, his eyes filled with determination. “This is a threat. Whoever is doing this, they want to scare you. But we’re not going to let them win.”

Leo pulled her into a gentle hug, his voice soothing. “Hey, we’ll get to the bottom of this, alright? They won’t lay a finger on you or the baby. I promise.”

Camille leaned into his embrace, grateful for his warmth and comfort, but the unease in her heart only grew stronger. Whoever was behind these threats wasn’t backing down. They wanted her to feel vulnerable, powerless. She could feel the weight of it settling over her, the reality that this wasn’t just a passing threat—this was someone with a very real intent to harm her and her child.

Matthew took the note carefully, examining it as if hoping to find any clue. “We need to take this seriously. This isn’t just intimidation. They’re escalating, and we can’t ignore that.”

Leo looked to Camille, his hand still on her shoulder. “Maybe we should consider going somewhere safe for a while. Somewhere they wouldn’t expect you to be.”

Camille nodded slowly, her mind racing. “But where could we go? If they know where I am now, they’ll keep finding me.”

Matthew’s gaze was firm, his expression filled with determination. “We’ll find a place. Somewhere remote, where we can keep an eye out for anything unusual. We can’t let them make you feel trapped here.”

Camille swallowed, the idea both comforting and daunting. She glanced back at the note, the dead mouse a chilling reminder of the lengths this person was willing to go. “You’re right. We need to get out of here.”

Within the next few hours, they packed essentials, grabbing only what they needed. Leo contacted a friend who owned a small cabin tucked away in the mountains, a secluded place that wasn’t listed publicly. They decided it was the safest option, a temporary escape until they could figure out who was behind these threats and put an end to it.

As they drove up the winding mountain roads, Camille felt a mixture of relief and apprehension. She clutched her hands together, her mind still reeling from the morning’s discovery. Leo and Matthew were doing their best to keep the mood light, but she could see the tension in their faces, the silent exchanges they shared when they thought she wasn’t looking.

After what felt like hours, they finally reached the cabin. It was small but cozy, nestled between tall pine trees with a breathtaking view of the valley below. Camille took a deep breath, feeling a small sense of peace settle over her.

Leo helped her carry her bags inside, his gaze soft as he looked at her. “We’ll be safe here, Camille. You can rest, take a breath. You don’t have to face this alone.”

Matthew joined them, setting their bags down with a quiet resolve. “We’ll take turns keeping watch. No one will get near this cabin without us knowing.”

Camille nodded, her gratitude overwhelming her. “Thank you. Both of you. I don’t know what I’d do without you.”

They spent the evening settling in, taking small comforts in the warmth of the fire and the quiet solitude of the mountains. As the night deepened, Camille found herself relaxing, lulled by the peacefulness of their surroundings and the reassuring presence of Leo and Matthew nearby.

After dinner, they sat together by the fire, sharing stories and memories, trying to lift her spirits. Camille found herself smiling, a genuine warmth returning to her heart. The fear that had consumed her all day seemed to fade, replaced by the comfort of her newfound family.

As the fire crackled and the night grew quieter, Camille glanced at Leo, then at Matthew, feeling the weight of everything they had been through together. She reached out, taking their hands, her heart filled with gratitude and something deeper—something that had been growing quietly within her.

“Thank you,” she whispered, her voice thick with emotion. “You’ve both been here for me through everything. I don’t know how I can ever repay you.”

Matthew squeezed her hand gently, his eyes filled with warmth. “Camille, you don’t owe us anything. We’re here because we care about you. And we’ll protect you and this baby with everything we have.”

Leo nodded, a soft smile on his face. “We’re a team, Camille. Nothing’s going to change that.”

They sat in comfortable silence, the fire casting a warm glow around them. Camille felt her heart begin to settle, a sense of safety and belonging wrapping around her like a blanket. She knew there were challenges ahead, but for the first time, she felt truly hopeful.

But just as she started to relax, her phone buzzed from across the room, piercing the quiet of the cabin. She exchanged a nervous glance with Leo and Matthew, a chill running down her spine. She stood, her heart pounding as she picked up the phone.

It was another unknown number.

With a shaking hand, she answered, bracing herself for the worst.

An unfamiliar, cold voice filled the silence. “Did you think you could hide from me, Camille?”
