Between Four of Us

Into the Lion’s Den

Ch. 105 / 250 Jun 22, 2025

Despite the rising tension in the room, Camille stood her ground, her heart pounding with a mix of fear and determination. Noah, Matthew, and Leo surrounded her, their voices overlapping in protest. But her resolve was unshakable.

“You don’t have to do this,” Matthew said, his tone sharp with frustration. “Let us handle him.”

Camille shook her head, her hands steady even as her voice trembled. “I’ve let him control me for far too long. If I keep running or hiding, he wins. I need to face him—to end this, for all of us.”

Noah’s hand gripped her arm, his pleading eyes searching hers. “We can’t let you walk into this alone. He’s dangerous.”

“I’ll go,” she said firmly, brushing away his concerns but softening her tone. “But I’ll be wired. You’ll hear everything. If something goes wrong, you’ll know where to find me. I need to do this my way.”

Leo crossed his arms, his jaw set in frustration. “Your way better include walking out of there alive.”

“It does,” she said, a faint smile pulling at her lips. “I promise.”

The following day, the air outside the secluded café was heavy with humidity, the threat of rain looming. Camille approached the glass-fronted building with measured steps, her nerves coiled tight but her expression composed. Inside, Conrad was already waiting, seated at a corner table. He looked as polished and composed as ever, a predator cloaked in civility.

She adjusted her bag strap and stepped in. The faint hum of conversation in the café dimmed as she approached him, her heels clicking softly against the floor. His eyes flicked up, and a faint smirk curved his lips.

“Camille,” he said smoothly, standing briefly before gesturing for her to sit. “You’ve grown bold.”

She slid into the seat opposite him, her movements deliberate. “And you’ve grown desperate,” she replied, her voice cool and cutting.

Conrad’s smirk deepened, but his eyes gleamed with something sharp and dangerous. “Still quick with words, I see. That must be exhausting for your three… companions.”

Her expression didn’t waver, though her pulse quickened. “I didn’t come here to exchange barbs, Conrad. Let’s not waste time.”

“Ah, but time is the one luxury I’ve never been denied,” he said, leaning back in his chair. “Tell me, what exactly do you hope to accomplish by meeting me? Closure? Answers? Or are you here to beg?”

Camille’s jaw tightened, but she forced herself to maintain control. “You’ve been skulking around, playing your little games. I want to know what you’re planning and why you think you can worm your way back into my life.”

Conrad’s chuckle was low and humorless. “Straight to the point. I admire that about you.” He leaned forward, his voice dropping into a conspiratorial whisper. “But you misunderstand me. I’m not interested in your life, Camille. I’m interested in what you’ve built.”

Her stomach twisted, but she didn’t flinch. “And what’s that supposed to mean?”

“Those three fools you’ve tied yourself to,” he said, his tone laced with derision. “Do you think they love you? That they married you because they couldn’t live without you? You’re a pawn in their game. And when this is over, you’ll see the truth.”

Camille’s nails dug into her palm beneath the table, her voice steady despite the chill crawling up her spine. “Your mind games won’t work on me, Conrad. If you have something to say, say it.”

“Oh, I’ll say it when the time is right.” He leaned back again, his smirk returning as he studied her. “But tell me, Camille. What will you do when they prove me right? When you realize you’ve been nothing but a means to an end?”

She stood abruptly, her chair scraping against the floor. Her eyes bore into his with an intensity that made his smirk falter for the briefest moment. “What I’ll do, Conrad, is walk away. Because unlike you, I don’t need to manipulate people to matter. That’s the difference between us.”

Without waiting for a response, she turned and strode out of the café, her heart pounding as she made her way back to where she knew her husbands were waiting.
