Between Four of Us

Chapter 75

Ch. 75 / 250 Jun 22, 2025

Camille’s mind reeled as she processed the latest message, the words blurring in front of her eyes. The person behind the threats was still out there, still intent on getting to her and her unborn child. But as she read the message again, a strange feeling gnawed at her, a faint sense of familiarity in the tone, as if the sender was someone she knew—or had once known.

Leo noticed her expression and leaned in, concern in his gaze. “Camille? What is it? You look like you’ve seen a ghost.”

Camille swallowed, trying to push down the unsettling feeling. “It’s just… I don’t know. This message feels different. Almost like it’s someone who knows me… knows us.” She glanced at Matthew and Leo, her stomach twisting with unease.

Matthew took her phone, rereading the message with a frown. “Whoever this is, they’re not giving up. But you’re right—this feels personal, almost as if they’re trying to scare you directly, not just for the sake of the baby.”

Leo’s eyes darkened, his hand resting protectively on her shoulder. “Who would know you that well? And who would have such an interest in the baby? Camille, if you have any ideas, we need to consider them all.”

Camille shook her head, but just as she was about to speak, a new message came through on her phone. She stared at it, her heart pounding as she read the words:

Meet me where the light meets the water. You’ll find your answers there.

The message echoed something familiar, something from her past. She remembered Noah telling her once about a favorite meeting place of his—the place where “the light meets the water.” It was an isolated spot by a lake they had visited once, a secluded area surrounded by trees where the sunrise cast a perfect reflection on the water’s surface. It had been one of Noah’s favorite spots, a place he had always described as peaceful.

“‘Where the light meets the water,’” she murmured, her mind racing. “That’s something Noah used to say. It’s the lake we went to… his favorite spot.”

Leo and Matthew exchanged a glance, both of them looking wary but intrigued.

“Do you think…?” Leo began, his voice trailing off as if he didn’t want to voice the thought.

Camille’s heart hammered in her chest. “I don’t know what to think. It’s impossible, right? Noah… Noah’s gone.”

But even as she said it, doubts crept in. She had been told Noah was dead, but she had never actually seen his body. The whole ordeal had happened so quickly, leaving so many questions unanswered. Could it be possible that he hadn’t died—that someone else had taken his place?

Matthew placed a reassuring hand on her shoulder, his gaze steady. “There’s only one way to find out. If this is someone using Noah’s memory to lure you in, we’ll know soon enough. But if there’s even the slightest chance that Noah is alive…”

Camille took a shaky breath, nodding. She didn’t want to get her hopes up, but the idea that Noah might still be out there, alive, was too powerful to ignore. “Then we go to the lake,” she said, her voice filled with a quiet determination.

The drive to the lake was tense, filled with a mixture of anticipation and trepidation. Camille’s mind raced with questions. If Noah was alive, why had he stayed hidden? And why was he sending these cryptic, threatening messages?

They parked a short distance away, moving cautiously toward the lake, where the water was still and quiet, bathed in the soft glow of moonlight. Camille scanned the area, her heart pounding as she searched for any sign of life.

“Camille,” Leo whispered, pointing to a figure standing at the edge of the water.

She squinted, her breath catching as she recognized the familiar silhouette. Her heart leapt, a surge of disbelief and hope flooding through her. The figure was unmistakably Noah, standing tall and motionless, his face turned away as he looked out over the lake.

“Noah?” she called out, her voice barely above a whisper, but he must have heard her, because he turned, his gaze meeting hers.

Her hand flew to her mouth as she took in his face, every line and feature so familiar. It was him. Noah. He was alive.

“Noah,” she whispered again, taking a step forward, her emotions swirling between shock, joy, and confusion. “How… how are you here?”

He looked at her, his expression conflicted, and she noticed the tension in his face, the weariness in his eyes. “Camille… I’m so sorry. I never wanted any of this.”

Leo and Matthew stepped forward, both of them tense, their gazes fixed on Noah. “What’s going on?” Matthew demanded. “We thought you were dead. Camille thought you were dead.”

Noah looked down, his hands clenching at his sides. “That was the plan. They wanted me gone… replaced. The person you thought was me was a clone—someone they created to take my place, to make it seem like I had died. They used him to lure me into captivity.”

Camille’s heart ached as she listened, struggling to process his words. “But who would do this to you? And why?”

Noah’s face darkened. “A powerful organization. People I thought I could trust. When I started uncovering their secrets, they saw me as a threat, and they used my own research against me. They took me, held me captive, and forced me to send those messages to you. They wanted you scared, vulnerable… to manipulate you.”

Camille took a step closer, her voice shaking. “You… you’ve been the one behind the threats?”

Noah’s face twisted in anguish. “I had no choice, Camille. They told me they’d kill you and the baby if I didn’t follow their orders. I was desperate. I thought it was the only way to keep you safe.”

Leo stepped forward, his face filled with anger and betrayal. “So you let Camille go through hell, fearing for her life, for your child’s life? Do you have any idea what you put her through?”

Noah nodded, his voice barely audible. “I know. And I’ll never forgive myself for it. I wanted to reach out, to find another way, but they were watching me constantly. I only just managed to escape.”

Camille’s gaze softened, her heart breaking as she saw the pain in his eyes. Despite everything, she could see that he had been a victim too, forced to play a role in a twisted scheme. “Noah… I can’t believe you’re really here. I thought I’d lost you.”

He reached for her hand, his touch hesitant, as if afraid she might pull away. “Camille, I’m here now. And I promise, I’m going to make this right. We’re going to protect our family, together.”

But as they stood there, the quiet of the night suddenly shattered by the sound of footsteps. A group of men emerged from the shadows, their faces cold and determined. One of them, a tall man with a scar across his cheek, smirked as he looked at Noah.

“You thought you could escape, didn’t you?” he sneered. “But you’re not going anywhere.”

Noah pulled Camille behind him, his face hardening as he faced the men. “It’s over. I’m done playing by your rules.”

The man laughed, his gaze flicking to Camille and then to Leo and Matthew. “You all have something we need. And we won’t be leaving until we get it.”
