Between Four of Us

Chapter 97

Ch. 97 / 250 Jun 22, 2025

The morning of the wedding dawned gray and overcast, a low rumble of thunder rolling in the distance as Camille got ready in the small cottage near the venue. She had woken up feeling a mixture of excitement and nerves, hoping against hope that the weather would clear. All week, they’d been promised sunny skies, and she’d planned for a beautiful garden ceremony beneath the open sky, with the lake and wildflowers creating the perfect backdrop. But as she sat in front of the mirror, her hair half done, she heard the first heavy raindrops begin to patter against the window.

She tried to ignore it, telling herself it was just a passing shower, but the sound only grew louder, a steady downpour that soon turned into a torrent. By the time her makeup artist arrived, the rain was pouring so hard it was almost deafening, the sky dark and unrelenting.

“Camille, don’t worry,” her maid of honor, Alyssa, said softly, coming up beside her as Camille stared out the window with wide eyes. “It’s just a little rain. It’ll pass.”

Camille forced a smile, nodding even as her heart sank. “Yeah, you’re right. It’s just a little rain.”

But as the morning wore on, it became clear that this was no passing shower. The rain fell harder, drenching the venue and creating small rivers that snaked across the lawn, where they had planned to set up chairs and flowers. The once-picturesque scene was now a sea of mud and puddles, the carefully arranged decorations drenched and wilting.

Alyssa’s phone buzzed with messages from the wedding planner, who was frantically trying to rearrange everything and find cover for the guests. “They’re moving everything into the barn,” Alyssa said, her tone hopeful. “It’s cozy in there, and they’ll make it look beautiful, Camille. You’ll see.”

Camille tried to hold onto that optimism, but as she slipped into her dress, every small problem felt amplified. The lace had needed a last-minute adjustment, and though the dress was stunning, it still didn’t feel exactly like the vision she’d held in her mind for so long. Her hands trembled as she smoothed it over her waist, and she took a deep breath, trying to calm her racing heart.

Just then, Noah, Leo, and Matthew sent her a quick message, each reassuring her that everything would work out, that the rain would make the day unique and memorable. But their words, while kind, didn’t quell the disappointment that was building inside her.

As Alyssa helped her with the veil, Camille’s heart sank further, the sound of rain drumming against the roof only growing louder. She looked in the mirror, her eyes filling with tears as she took in the image of herself, dressed in her dream gown but surrounded by a scene that felt like anything but a dream.

“Camille, don’t cry,” Alyssa murmured, her voice soft as she touched Camille’s shoulder. “Rain on a wedding day is good luck, remember? It’s supposed to be a blessing.”

Camille let out a shaky laugh, blinking back her tears. “Right. Good luck.” She took another steadying breath, trying to remind herself that it was just a small hiccup, that what mattered was marrying Noah, Leo, and Matthew, not the setting.

But as the clock ticked closer to the ceremony time, the rain only grew heavier, now accompanied by flashes of lightning and booming thunder. Camille could hear the commotion outside as the wedding planner and staff scrambled to make last-minute changes. The garden ceremony was officially canceled, and the barn, though charming, was cramped, the decorations hastily moved and damp from the downpour.

A knock at the door pulled her from her thoughts, and Alyssa opened it to find Noah standing there, looking concerned as he took in Camille’s expression.

“Can I talk to her for a moment?” he asked gently, stepping into the room.

Alyssa nodded and gave Camille a reassuring smile before slipping out. Noah approached Camille, his hands warm as he took hers, his face etched with worry. “Camille, I know this isn’t what you planned. But I need you to know that no matter where we say our vows, it’s going to be the perfect day because it’s about us.”

Camille felt her composure crack, the weight of all the changes and disappointments finally overwhelming her. “Noah, everything is falling apart. The dress, the venue, and now this rain… I just wanted it to be beautiful. I wanted it to be the day we dreamed of.”

Noah reached up, gently wiping a tear from her cheek. “Camille, the day is still beautiful because you’re here. You’re the person I want to spend my life with. The rain doesn’t change that.”

Camille looked down, her shoulders slumping as more tears slipped down her cheeks. “But it’s not what we planned, Noah. It feels like every little detail is wrong. I wanted everything to be perfect for us, and now it feels like… like maybe this wedding isn’t even meant to be.”

Noah’s face softened, and he pulled her into a warm embrace, holding her close as she let out a soft sob. “Camille, listen to me. This wedding is meant to be because it’s about us and the life we’re building together. The rain, the setbacks—they’re just a part of the story we’re going to tell. I know it’s not easy, but we can find beauty in the unexpected.”

Camille nodded against his chest, taking comfort in his words, though a part of her still felt crushed by the weight of her disappointment. She had put so much of herself into planning this day, imagining a perfect vision, and now that vision was nowhere in sight.

“I just wanted it to be special,” she whispered, her voice trembling.

Noah leaned back, looking down at her with a gentle smile. “It is special, Camille. And after all, you’re marrying three men who love you more than anything. That’s what today is about. Not the dress, not the venue. It’s about us being together, no matter what.”

As he spoke, the door opened again, and Leo and Matthew stepped in, their expressions filled with concern. They quickly joined her and Noah, each of them wrapping her in a supportive embrace.

“Camille, you don’t have to carry all this on your shoulders,” Matthew said softly. “We’re here for you. We’re in this together.”

Leo reached for her hand, giving her a reassuring squeeze. “We’ll make this work, no matter what. Rain or shine, barn or garden—today’s about celebrating our love.”

Camille took a shaky breath, looking at each of them, her heart swelling with gratitude even as her disappointment lingered. “Thank you,” she murmured, her voice filled with a mixture of love and sadness. “I know you’re right, but… it’s hard to let go of the dream I had.”

As she looked at her reflection, dressed in her beautiful gown but with eyes red from crying, she whispered, “I don’t think this wedding is meant to be.”
