Between Four of Us

Chapter 73

Ch. 73 / 250 Jun 22, 2025

Camille’s heart raced as the cold, distorted voice on the other end of the line filled the quiet cabin. She clutched the phone, her breath coming in short, panicked bursts as she struggled to find her voice.

“Who are you?” she managed to whisper, her hand trembling as she held the phone to her ear. “What do you want from me?”

There was a chilling pause, and then the voice spoke again, a sinister calmness in each word. “I told you, Camille. You’re carrying something you shouldn’t. This child will only bring more problems, more danger. You know what you need to do.”

A wave of anger surged through her, cutting through the fear. She straightened, her voice firm as she replied, “This baby is my family. I won’t let you or anyone else dictate my life.”

The voice let out a low, mocking laugh. “Brave words. But bravery won’t protect you from what’s coming. You can run, but there’s nowhere you can hide. If you continue with this… little plan of yours, there will be consequences.”

Camille felt a presence beside her and looked up to see Leo and Matthew standing close, their faces etched with concern. Leo motioned for her to hand over the phone, and she did, gratefully, letting him take over.

“This is Leo,” he said, his voice cold and unyielding. “You have a lot of nerve threatening Camille and her child. I don’t know who you think you are, but if you come near her again, you’ll regret it.”

There was a beat of silence, and then the voice responded, taunting. “Ah, the protectors. You think you can shield her from everything? I know all about you, Leo. And Matthew too. Don’t be so sure you’re untouchable.”

Matthew leaned closer, his gaze hardening. “We’re done with your threats. If you try anything, we’ll make sure you pay for it.”

The voice didn’t waver, even in the face of their threat. “You think you’re in control, but you’re just delaying the inevitable. This isn’t over.” And with that, the line went dead.

Leo set the phone down, his jaw clenched, his hand still gripping Camille’s shoulder protectively. “Whoever this is, they’re not just trying to scare you—they’re trying to break you. We can’t let them get to you like this.”

Matthew nodded, his gaze filled with determination. “They’re escalating. First the phone calls, then the mouse. They want you to feel vulnerable. But we’re not going to let them win, Camille. We’ll keep you safe.”

Camille took a shaky breath, her heart still pounding. “But how can we stop them if we don’t know who they are? They’ve already found us here. Where else can we go?”

Leo took her hand, his expression softening. “We’re not running anymore, Camille. Whoever’s behind this, we’re going to find out. We’re going to face them head-on.”

Matthew nodded in agreement, his eyes hard with resolve. “We’ll dig into every connection, every possibility. We’ll find out who’s doing this and put an end to it.”

Camille looked between them, her heart swelling with gratitude and admiration. Despite the danger, they stood by her, willing to protect her and her child at any cost. She squeezed their hands, her voice soft but filled with determination. “Thank you. I don’t know what I’d do without you both.”

Leo flashed a reassuring smile, his usual lighthearted demeanor returning for a moment. “Hey, we’re family. And that means we don’t back down, no matter how creepy the threats get.”

Camille managed a small laugh, the warmth of his presence breaking through the fear. She looked at Matthew, who gave her a gentle nod, his eyes filled with unspoken promise. She knew she could trust them, that they wouldn’t rest until this was over.

The next few days passed in a blur of investigation and vigilance. Leo and Matthew took turns keeping watch, each of them on high alert for any sign of the mysterious caller. They also began to reach out to old contacts, using every connection they had to try to trace the calls and uncover any clues that could lead them to whoever was behind the threats.

One evening, as Camille sat at the kitchen table, flipping through old family photos for comfort, Leo joined her, his gaze thoughtful. “Camille, I’ve been thinking… is there anyone from Noah’s past who might have a reason to want to hurt you or the baby?”

Matthew, who was standing nearby, leaned in. “Maybe this isn’t about you, Camille. Maybe it’s about what Noah knew—something that he left behind, something they don’t want coming to light.”

Camille’s eyes widened, a sense of dread creeping over her. “Do you think this is connected to the Rosetta Code?”

Leo nodded slowly. “It’s possible. Whoever this is, they might see you and the baby as threats because you could expose them through whatever Noah left behind.”

A chill ran down Camille’s spine as she realized the weight of their words. “Then… they’ll never stop, will they? They’ll keep coming after us until they’re sure there’s no one left to uncover their secrets.”

Matthew placed a comforting hand on her shoulder. “Then we make sure they know we’re not backing down. We find out who’s behind this and show them they can’t threaten our family.”

Leo met her gaze, his expression filled with fierce determination. “We’re going to get through this, Camille. They don’t get to take anything else from you. Not after all you’ve been through.”

As the sun dipped below the horizon, casting the cabin in shadows, Camille felt a spark of hope. With Leo and Matthew by her side, she knew she wasn’t facing this fight alone. Together, they would find a way to protect her child, no matter what it took.

But that night, as she lay in bed, sleep eluding her, Camille heard the faint sound of a car engine in the distance. Her heart pounded, and she glanced out the window, peering through the darkness. She couldn’t see anything, but the eerie feeling that someone was watching her refused to leave.

The next morning, she found an envelope slipped under the cabin door. Her hands trembled as she picked it up, feeling the weight of it. She opened it carefully, revealing a photograph of her standing in the kitchen with Leo and Matthew the previous night.

Underneath the photo, a single line was scrawled in dark ink: We’re closer than you think.

Her heart hammered, and she rushed to find Leo and Matthew, holding out the photo with shaking hands. “They were here. They’re watching us,” she whispered, fear lacing her words.

Leo took the photo, his expression hardening. “They’re taunting us. Trying to make you feel helpless.”

Matthew’s face was filled with fury, his jaw set. “This ends now. We’re not going to let them get away with this.”

Camille looked between them, her fear mingling with a fierce determination. “Then we need to be ready for whatever comes next. Because I won’t let them take this baby from me.”
