Between Four of Us

The Echoes of Betrayal

Ch. 102 / 250 Jun 22, 2025

Camille awoke to the low hum of whispers seeping through the stillness of the early morning. The faint voices of her three husbands carried up the staircase, threading urgency through the silence. She lay motionless for a moment, her pulse quickening as fragments of their conversation reached her. The tension in their tones was unmistakable, and though her body still felt heavy with the residue of restless dreams, her mind jolted fully awake.

She sat up slowly, the ache of last night’s memories settling heavily in her chest. Conrad’s face flashed behind her eyes—his cold greeting, his imposing presence, the shock of seeing him alive. The nightmare she had worked so hard to escape had returned, dragging her back into its clutches. But her husbands’ voices pulled her focus to the present.

Slipping out of bed, she crept to the door, her movements careful, her breath shallow. She moved as quietly as she could, her bare feet brushing against the cool wood floor as she tiptoed toward the staircase. Pausing at the top, she crouched slightly, gripping the bannister as she strained to hear.

“This Conrad isn’t just some estranged relative,” Matthew said, his words clipped and deliberate. “Did you see how she froze last night? He’s got power over her—power that comes from fear. Whatever he did to her, it’s not small.”

Camille swallowed hard, her chest tightening as the words hit their mark. The protective edge in Matthew’s voice made her heart ache, but hearing him articulate her terror so clearly made it feel all the more real.

Leo’s sharp tone broke through. “Fear, control—it doesn’t matter. That man isn’t here for nostalgia. There’s a reason he’s shown up now, and I don’t think it’s just to stir up trouble. He’s calculated. He wants something, and we need to figure out what.”

Noah let out a frustrated sigh. “We can’t just sit here and wait for him to make the next move. If we don’t take control of the situation, he will. And if he’s half as dangerous as he seems…”

The rest of the sentence hung in the air, heavy and unfinished. Camille’s hands tightened on the railing. Their voices, their concern, should have been comforting. Instead, it felt like they were peeling away the carefully constructed layers she had built to shield herself. The vulnerability she had buried for years was being unearthed, one thread at a time.

She couldn’t let this spiral out of her control. Not again. Camille stepped forward, descending the stairs with deliberate steps, her voice trembling but determined. “He wants to ruin me.”

The three men turned to her at once, their faces flickering with surprise and worry. The shadows of night still lingered in the dimly lit room, softening their features but sharpening the intensity of their gazes. Camille reached the bottom of the stairs and clasped her hands tightly in front of her, steadying herself. The weight of their attention made her feel exposed, but she forced herself to meet their eyes.

“Conrad…” Her voice faltered for a moment, but she pushed through, her words spilling into the space between them. “He’s not just my uncle. He’s the man who made my childhood a living hell.” Her throat tightened, and her next words emerged raw and uneven. “He controlled everything. My choices, my freedom—he took it all. I fought for years to escape his shadow. And now he’s back because I dared to be happy. Because I dared to live without him.”

Noah was the first to move, crossing the room in a few quick strides. His arms enveloped her in a firm, protective embrace, the warmth of his presence chasing away the chill that had settled in her bones. “He doesn’t get to take that happiness from you, Camille. Not this time. Not ever again.”

Behind him, Leo and Matthew exchanged a look. Leo’s jaw clenched, his expression darkening with resolve. “We’ll figure this out,” he said, his voice low but certain. “Whatever it takes, we’ll deal with him.”

Matthew’s gaze lingered on Camille, softening as he stepped closer. “But we need to know everything, Camille. No more secrets. If we’re going to protect you, we have to understand what we’re up against.”

Her lips parted, hesitation flickering across her face as the weight of their demand settled over her. But she forced herself to nod, her resolve hardening. “I’ll tell you everything,” she said quietly. Her gaze flicked to each of them in turn, her voice carrying a new edge of warning. “But you need to promise me something first.”

“Anything,” Noah said immediately, his arms tightening around her as though anchoring her in place.

She looked down, her fists clenching at her sides as the memories clawed their way back to the surface. When she raised her eyes again, they were filled with a dark, determined light. “Promise me you won’t underestimate him. Conrad doesn’t play fair. He never has.”
