Between Four of Us

Chapter 66

Ch. 66 / 250 Jun 22, 2025

“You know,” Noah said, breaking the comfortable silence, his hand squeezing hers gently, “I never thought I’d get a chance at this. At… something real, something that feels like home.”

Camille turned to him, smiling softly. “Why not?”

He shrugged, his eyes on the road ahead but his expression thoughtful. “With the life I had before… always moving, always focused on the next mission. I didn’t think it was possible to settle down, let alone find someone I wanted to settle down with.”

“Well, I’m glad you did,” Camille said, her voice tender. “Because I don’t know what I’d do without you.”

Noah glanced at her, his face lighting up. “You have no idea how much that means to me.”

They drove on, the silence between them filled with the unspoken promises they had made to each other. After a few minutes, Camille leaned back, gazing out at the trees passing by, their colors glowing under the soft light of the setting sun.

“Noah,” she said suddenly, as if struck by an idea, “if you could go anywhere, right now, with me, where would it be?”

He grinned, his eyes twinkling. “Anywhere?”

“Yes, anywhere.”

He thought about it for a moment, tapping his fingers on the steering wheel. “Italy. We’d start in Rome, see the ruins, take late-night walks through the city. Then we’d go to Tuscany. I’d teach you to make pasta from scratch, and we’d drink way too much wine.”

Camille laughed, the warmth of his vision filling her with joy. “Sounds perfect. And maybe someday…?”

Noah gave her a sidelong glance, his smile soft. “Maybe someday,” he murmured, his hand reaching over to tuck a stray piece of hair behind her ear.

They continued their drive, the conversation flowing easily, filled with laughter and quiet moments that spoke of how deeply they understood each other. They shared stories of childhood dreams, future ambitions, and all the silly things in between.

As they reached a stretch of road along a cliffside, Noah suddenly glanced at her, his face serious. “Camille… there’s something I’ve been meaning to say.”

“What is it?” she asked, sensing the gravity in his tone.

“I know we’ve been through a lot together, but…” He paused, as if searching for the right words. “You’re it for me, Camille. You’re the one I want by my side, for everything.”

Camille felt her breath catch, her heart swelling with emotion. “Noah… I feel the same way. I can’t imagine my life without you.”

They shared a look, the depth of their connection so powerful it seemed to fill the car. Camille squeezed his hand, her gaze locked on his.

“Noah,” she whispered, her voice barely audible, “I think I love you.”

Noah’s face softened, his eyes glistening with emotion. “I love you too, Camille. More than you know.”

They drove in silence for a few minutes, letting the moment settle between them, both of them basking in the warmth of the words they’d finally spoken. But as they rounded a curve, the headlights illuminated something unexpected—a car in the opposite lane, swerving wildly toward them.

“Noah!” Camille gasped, gripping his arm.

Noah reacted instantly, his face grim as he tried to swerve to avoid the oncoming vehicle. “Hold on, Camille!” he shouted, his voice tense.

Everything happened in a blur. The car swerved, tires screeching, as Noah tried to keep control. Camille felt her body lurch forward, her heart hammering as the other car collided with theirs. The sound of metal crashing filled the air, and everything went dark.

When Camille opened her eyes, the world was a haze of shattered glass and twisted metal. She felt a dull ache in her side, her head throbbing as she tried to focus. Blinking away the blur, she looked over to see Noah slumped against his seat, his face pale.

“Noah?” Her voice trembled as she reached out to touch his arm. “Noah, please… please wake up.”

There was no response. Panic surged through her as she shook him, her fingers trembling. “Noah! You have to wake up. Please…”

His breathing was faint, each shallow rise and fall of his chest barely visible. Tears blurred her vision as she desperately tried to think, to find some way to help him.

“Noah,” she whispered, her voice choked with emotion. “You said you’d always be here. You promised. Please don’t leave me.”

Just then, faint voices echoed from somewhere nearby. People were approaching the wreck, calling out as they hurried to the scene.

“Please!” Camille screamed, her voice raw. “Help us! He’s hurt!”

A pair of hands reached through the window, a paramedic’s calm face appearing as he assessed the situation. “Miss, we’re going to get you both out, alright? Just hold on.”

Camille nodded, her eyes never leaving Noah’s face as the paramedics worked to free them. She clutched his hand, whispering his name over and over, as if somehow that alone could keep him anchored to her.

They pulled her out first, but she fought to stay close to him, her hand reaching for him even as they urged her to let go. “Noah! I’m right here. I’m not leaving you,” she sobbed, watching as they carefully lifted him from the wreckage.

Hours passed in a blur at the hospital. Camille paced the waiting room, her mind filled with memories of him, of everything they had shared and the future they had just begun to plan together. Each second felt like an eternity as she waited for news.

Finally, a doctor approached, his expression somber. Camille’s heart plummeted as he gently guided her to a seat.

“I’m so sorry,” he began, his voice soft but unsteady. “We did everything we could, but his injuries were too severe.”

“No…” Camille shook her head, refusing to believe it. “No, he can’t be gone. He can’t—”

The doctor placed a hand on her shoulder, his face filled with empathy. “He was a fighter, but… he’s gone.”

Camille felt her world shatter. Her body trembled as she gripped the edge of the chair, her chest tightening as she tried to process the weight of his words. The love she had found, the happiness they had begun to build—it was all gone, taken in an instant.

Leo and Matthew arrived soon after, their faces etched with grief as they held her, each of them sharing in her sorrow. They stayed with her as she broke down, offering quiet comfort as she struggled to grasp the enormity of her loss.

Over the days that followed, Camille found herself lost in memories of Noah—the way he looked at her, the way he made her feel understood, the promises they had made. She could still hear his voice, feel the warmth of his hand in hers.

One evening, she sat by the lake where they’d uncovered her father’s last secret, letting the soft breeze carry her tears away. Leo and Matthew sat beside her, their silent presence a comfort.
