Between Four of Us

Chapter 63

Ch. 63 / 250 Jun 22, 2025

Camille’s heart pounded as Juliette’s reinforcements approached, their footsteps echoing ominously in the alley. She felt the tension in the air, a cold reminder of the stakes they were facing. But as the men came closer, she noticed something—uncertainty flickering in Juliette’s gaze, a hesitation she hadn’t seen before.

“Juliette,” Camille called out, her voice strong despite the fear bubbling within her. “This doesn’t have to end like this. You don’t have to keep doing their bidding. Whatever promises they’ve made you, they’ll break them. They don’t care about you.”

Juliette’s eyes narrowed, but Camille could see the crack in her resolve. “And what do you care, Camille? After all these years, why would you care about what happens to me?”

Camille took a deep breath, her gaze softening. “Because, no matter what’s happened, you were my friend. We were like family. I don’t want to see you hurt. Walk away from this, Juliette. You don’t have to be a part of their plans.”

Juliette’s grip on her earpiece slackened slightly, her eyes darting to the approaching men and then back to Camille. A glimmer of the friend she’d once known shone through the hardened mask, and for a moment, she seemed to waver.

“Don’t listen to her!” one of the men called, his voice sharp and cold. “She’s just trying to get in your head.”

But Juliette hesitated, her face a mixture of anger and anguish. “I didn’t want this, Camille,” she murmured, her voice barely above a whisper. “I thought… I thought I’d finally found a way to make something of myself, to prove that I was worth something.”

“You don’t need them to prove that, Juliette,” Camille said, stepping forward. “You’re already enough. You’ve always been enough.”

The vulnerability in Juliette’s face deepened, and with a final, trembling sigh, she dropped the signal jammer and took a step back. The men around her exchanged confused glances, but before they could react, Noah, Leo, and Matthew seized the opportunity, moving swiftly to disarm them and push them back.

Within moments, the alley was cleared, and the danger had dissipated. Juliette stood there, looking lost and uncertain, her mask shattered. Camille approached her slowly, placing a gentle hand on her shoulder.

“Juliette,” she said softly, her voice filled with compassion, “you have a choice now. Whatever you thought you needed from them, you’re free of it. You can start over.”

Juliette looked at her, her eyes glistening with unshed tears. “I’m sorry, Camille. I didn’t mean for any of this to happen. I… I lost myself somewhere along the way.”

Camille pulled her into a gentle embrace, holding her friend close. “It’s not too late. You can find your way back.”

With a final, sorrowful nod, Juliette turned and walked away, disappearing into the early morning light. Camille watched her go, a bittersweet feeling settling over her. She had saved her friend, but the bond they’d shared was forever changed.

As the first rays of sunlight broke over the horizon, exhaustion washed over Camille. The brothers were beside her in an instant, their concern evident.

“You did the right thing,” Noah said, his voice filled with warmth. “You gave her a second chance. Not many people would have done that.”

Camille managed a tired smile, her heart heavy but relieved. “I just hope she finds her way.”

Leo wrapped an arm around her shoulders, his expression soft. “Come on, let’s get you home. You need to rest.”

They led her back to the car, and Camille leaned into them, feeling the comfort of their presence as they drove through the quiet streets. By the time they arrived at her place, the weight of everything that had happened finally caught up to her, and she could barely keep her eyes open.

The brothers walked her inside, each of them making sure she was comfortable before leaving. But as they lingered by her door, Camille’s voice stopped them.

“Stay,” she murmured, her eyes half-closed. “I don’t… I don’t want to be alone tonight.”

They exchanged glances, a silent understanding passing between them, and then nodded. They settled onto the couches and chairs around her, creating a circle of warmth and safety. Camille lay back, her heart finally feeling at ease, and drifted into a peaceful sleep.

When she awoke, sunlight streamed through the window, casting a warm glow over the room. The brothers were still there, each of them dozing lightly, but they stirred as she sat up, stretching and blinking against the morning light.

“Good morning,” she said, her voice filled with gratitude as she looked at them.

Leo grinned, rubbing the sleep from his eyes. “Good morning. How are you feeling?”

Camille smiled, feeling a weight lifted from her heart. “Better. Thanks to all of you.”

Noah stood, offering her a hand to help her up. “We thought you might be in need of a break,” he said with a gentle smile. “How about a picnic? It’s a beautiful day.”

Camille’s eyes lit up, the idea bringing a sense of peace and simplicity she hadn’t felt in a long time. “I’d love that.”

They gathered a few things—a blanket, snacks, and drinks—and drove out to a nearby field, a hidden gem filled with wildflowers and shaded by tall trees. The sun was warm, and a gentle breeze rustled the leaves, filling the air with the scent of grass and blooming flowers.

As they spread out the blanket, Camille settled down, feeling a sense of tranquility wash over her. They shared food and stories, laughing as they recalled the moments they’d shared and the challenges they’d overcome. Each of them opened up in a way they hadn’t before, and Camille felt her heart swelling with gratitude for the bond they’d formed.

At one point, Leo pulled out a small, battered guitar he’d brought along, and he strummed a few soft chords, filling the air with a melody that matched the calm beauty of the day. Camille leaned back, closing her eyes as she let the music wash over her, feeling a deep, unspoken connection to each of them.

As the afternoon drifted into evening, they lay side by side on the blanket, watching the sky shift from bright blue to soft hues of pink and gold. Camille felt her heart pull in three different directions, each of the brothers holding a unique place in her heart, and she knew that, eventually, she would have to make a choice. But for now, she simply enjoyed their presence, the laughter and light they brought into her life.

But just as the first stars appeared in the twilight sky, Noah’s phone buzzed, breaking the peaceful silence. He glanced at the screen, his face tightening as he read the message.

“What is it?” Camille asked, her heart sinking at the sudden shift in his expression.

Noah looked up, his gaze filled with a new kind of urgency. “There’s… been a development. Something about the files we released.”

Camille’s pulse quickened, the peace of the day fading as reality came crashing back. She sat up, her eyes searching Noah’s face for answers.

“What kind of development?” she asked, her voice barely above a whisper.

Noah hesitated, exchanging a tense look with Leo and Matthew. “It seems… someone else has surfaced. Someone connected to your father’s secrets.”
