Between Four of Us

Chapter 56

Ch. 56 / 250 Jun 22, 2025

Camille’s pulse quickened as she held Noelle’s gaze, refusing to flinch under the woman’s challenging stare. This wasn’t just about the files, or even the mission they had started together. Noelle’s arrival felt like a storm cloud rolling in, threatening to unravel all the trust, the bonds, and the fragile stability that she had only just begun to build with Noah and the others.

Noah shifted uncomfortably, his face taut as he seemed to weigh the implications of letting Noelle into their plan. He cast a quick glance at Camille, and she thought she saw a flicker of guilt in his eyes before he turned back to Noelle.

“Noelle,” he began carefully, “this isn’t the time to dig up the past. We have a mission, and it’s personal. We don’t need… distractions.” His words seemed firm, but Camille could tell he was still struggling with his feelings toward this woman from his past.

Noelle’s smirk didn’t waver. “Oh, come on, Noah,” she said with a casual wave of her hand. “You know me better than that. I don’t do anything without a reason. I didn’t come here to reminisce about old times. I came because I have resources that can actually help you achieve what you’re trying to do. Or are you too proud to admit you need me?”

Matthew stepped in, his face as unreadable as ever, but his tone left no room for negotiation. “We’ve managed on our own so far. We don’t need outside interference—especially not from someone we can’t fully trust.”

Leo gave Camille a reassuring nod, his protective stance beside her a silent message of solidarity. “Noelle, whatever agenda you have, keep it away from Camille,” he said firmly. “She’s been through enough.”

Noelle’s eyes sparkled with amusement, her gaze drifting back to Camille, who felt her fists clench involuntarily. “Is that so? Poor thing,” Noelle said with a feigned sympathy that felt like acid. “But you know, Camille, you’re dealing with powerful people. People who won’t just sit back and let you dismantle their empire. I’m offering help—because frankly, you’ll need it.”

Camille finally found her voice, though it came out colder than she’d intended. “Thanks, but no thanks,” she replied, crossing her arms. “We’ve made it this far without you, and we can finish this without you too.”

Noelle chuckled, a sound that seemed to echo through the room. “Oh, sweetheart, you have no idea what you’re up against. This isn’t some noble crusade. It’s a battle of power, leverage, and alliances. Do you really think you know Noah? Do you really believe he hasn’t told me every detail about you?”

Camille felt a chill run through her at Noelle’s words, but she forced herself to stand tall, not giving Noelle the satisfaction of seeing her rattle. “Whatever you know or think you know about me doesn’t matter,” she replied, her tone steady. “What matters is that we’re doing this for my father. And I won’t let anyone—especially you—come between us and that goal.”

Noelle’s expression softened, though her eyes gleamed with something unreadable. “You’re tougher than I thought,” she admitted, her voice carrying a hint of respect. “I can see why Noah’s so taken with you. But I’ll tell you one thing: if you want to go down this path, you’re going to need people like me on your side. Because without me, you’re all just… well, walking targets.”

Camille opened her mouth to retort, but Noah raised a hand, stopping her. His face was a mask of frustration as he turned to Noelle. “Enough. Whatever this is—whatever game you’re playing—it ends now. We don’t need you. We have what we came for.”

Noelle’s gaze flickered with something dark, and for the first time, Camille sensed a shift in her demeanor. She dropped the playful tone, her face hardening as she looked Noah directly in the eyes. “You don’t get to decide that, Noah. Not this time. You brought me into this world, and I know more about these people than you could ever imagine. You may have moved on, but don’t forget who I am and what I’m capable of.”

The words lingered in the air, a threat barely concealed beneath her smooth exterior. Camille felt an instinctive urge to pull away, but her gaze remained fixed on Noelle, who seemed to revel in the tension she had stirred up.

Leo stepped forward, his voice tight with barely restrained anger. “If you know so much, then you know what we’re up against—and you know why Camille doesn’t need more complications. So why don’t you just walk away?”

Noelle’s lips curved into a smile as she turned to Camille, completely ignoring Leo. “Walk away? Oh, but where’s the fun in that?” she said with a cool, mocking laugh. “Camille, darling, you’re in over your head, and you don’t even realize it. They’re not telling you the whole truth, you know. They’re only telling you what they want you to believe.”

Camille’s stomach twisted, doubt creeping into her mind despite her best efforts to resist it. She looked to Noah, who met her gaze with an intensity that both comforted and unsettled her. “Camille, she’s trying to manipulate you,” he said firmly. “This is what she does. Don’t let her get inside your head.”

But Noelle leaned closer, her voice barely above a whisper, though the words carried like a shout. “You can trust them if you want,” she murmured. “But remember, Noah has his own reasons for helping you. And he hasn’t told you everything. Ask him about why he left me. Ask him about the people who killed your father. He knows more than he’s letting on.”

Camille’s heart pounded, her mind a storm of confusion and suspicion as she looked between Noah and Noelle. Noah’s jaw was clenched, his eyes darkening with anger, but he didn’t say a word, leaving the silence between them to deepen the uncertainty that was starting to consume her.

Noelle straightened, stepping back toward the door, her smirk lingering. “I’ll be around, Camille,” she said, throwing a wink over her shoulder. “When you’re ready for the truth, you know where to find me.”

With that, she slipped out the door, leaving a silence thick with unresolved tension and unanswered questions. Camille looked at Noah, her chest tight with a mixture of betrayal and doubt. She wanted to trust him, to believe in the connection they had built. But Noelle’s words had planted a seed of doubt, and she wasn’t sure she could ignore it.

“Is it true?” she asked, her voice barely a whisper, her gaze locked on his. “Is there something you’re not telling me about my father?”

Noah’s face was unreadable, his silence louder than any answer he could have given.
