Between Four of Us

Chapter 50

Ch. 50 / 250 Jun 22, 2025

Camille’s breath hitched, and her body tensed as she faced the figure blocking her path. There, half-hidden in the shadows, stood Zach, his face partially illuminated by the dim streetlight above. His gaze bore into her, intense and unreadable, a strange mix of relief and something darker that made her skin crawl.

“Camille,” he said softly, taking a slow step forward. “You shouldn’t have run off like that. You know how dangerous it is out here.”

Her pulse pounded in her ears as she instinctively backed up, but Noah’s presence behind her reminded her she was cornered. Trapped between the man who had once been her captor and the brother who’d tried to protect her but still couldn’t seem to let her be free. She glanced over her shoulder, meeting Noah’s worried gaze, his face taut with both frustration and concern.

“Zach,” Noah growled, stepping protectively in front of Camille. “What are you doing here?”

Zach’s lips curled into a faint smile, his gaze shifting briefly to Noah before settling back on Camille. “I came for her, obviously. She belongs with me.” His voice was disturbingly calm, as if this were a perfectly reasonable thing to say.

Camille’s blood ran cold. “I don’t belong with you,” she spat, forcing her voice to stay steady. “You manipulated me, lied to me. Whatever you think we had, it’s over.”

Zach’s smile didn’t falter, but a flicker of something—perhaps disappointment, perhaps anger—passed over his face. “I never lied to you, Camille,” he said, his tone shifting, almost pleading. “I’ve always been honest about one thing: I care about you. I would do anything for you. They don’t understand that. They don’t see you the way I do.”

Noah scoffed, his eyes narrowing. “This isn’t love, Zach. Whatever you feel, it’s twisted and selfish. You’re not here for her—you’re here to control her, just like before.”

Zach’s gaze sharpened, and he took another step forward, his focus entirely on Camille. “You think they’re any different, Camille?” he asked, gesturing toward Noah with a dismissive flick of his hand. “These so-called protectors of yours—they’ve made decisions about your life without asking you, haven’t they? They’re just like your father, just like everyone who thought they knew what was best for you. I’m the only one who sees you for who you truly are.”

Her chest tightened, and a surge of anger flared within her. “You’re wrong,” she said, her voice strong, defiant. “You never saw me. You saw what you wanted to see, and you tried to mold me into that image. But I’m not some prize you can claim, Zach. I’m not something you can control.”

Zach’s expression faltered, his jaw clenching as he seemed to wrestle with her words. He took a shaky breath, his eyes softening as he looked at her with a strange, desperate intensity. “Camille, please. I know I’ve made mistakes, but I’m here now. I can protect you, keep you safe from everything and everyone who would hurt you. Just give me another chance.”

Camille shook her head, feeling a pang of sadness for the person he might have once been. “I don’t want your protection, Zach. I want my life back. A life without you.”

A glint of anger flashed in his eyes, and his calm facade slipped, revealing the possessiveness simmering just beneath the surface. “You don’t know what you’re saying,” he muttered, his voice low and dangerous. “I’m the only one who can keep you safe. They’re going to get you killed, Camille. You’ll see that, eventually.”

“Back off, Zach,” Noah interjected, stepping between them fully now. “Camille made her choice, and it’s not you. Just leave her alone.”

Zach’s jaw clenched, and his hands balled into fists at his sides. His eyes flicked from Noah to Camille, filled with a mixture of betrayal and barely concealed rage. “You don’t understand, Noah. This isn’t just about me or her. She’s caught up in something bigger than any of us. And if you don’t get out of the way, you’ll be the one putting her at risk.”

Noah stood his ground, his voice steady. “And you’re the one who dragged her into this mess. You can’t twist that into a reason to keep her trapped.”

Camille took a shaky breath, her mind racing as she processed Zach’s words. He’d always hinted at some grand danger, something looming over her because of her father’s secrets. But the way he was talking now, it sounded like he knew more than he’d ever let on. As much as she hated to admit it, she needed answers, and Zach seemed to have them.

“What do you mean, Zach?” she asked, her voice tight with frustration. “If you know something about my father—something about why I’m being hunted—tell me the truth. Enough with the games.”

Zach’s gaze softened, and he took a small step closer, his tone shifting to something almost sincere. “I can’t tell you everything yet, Camille. It’s not safe. But your father wasn’t just a businessman. He was involved with people, powerful people, who want something he left behind. Something… valuable.”

Camille’s heart raced, fear mixing with curiosity. “What is it?”

Zach hesitated, glancing at Noah, clearly wary of revealing too much in front of him. “All I can tell you is that it’s something worth more than you could imagine. And as long as you’re out here, unprotected, they’ll keep coming for you.”

Noah scoffed, unimpressed. “So what, you’re saying you know how to protect her from all these invisible enemies? That she’s safer with you?”

Zach’s expression hardened. “Yes, because unlike you, I know exactly who’s after her. And if you don’t get out of my way, you’ll both end up regretting it.”

Camille’s pulse quickened, and a wave of frustration surged within her. She was so tired of everyone trying to dictate her life, trying to make choices for her without giving her the information she needed to make her own decisions. “Both of you, stop it!” she snapped, her voice echoing in the narrow alley. “I’m done with being protected, controlled, used. I want to know the truth, and I’m not going anywhere until someone tells me what’s really going on.”

Noah looked at her, his expression softening as if he understood her frustration. But before he could respond, a faint click echoed in the alley, freezing all three of them in place.

Camille turned, her blood running cold as she saw a group of shadowy figures emerging from the end of the alley, each holding a weapon aimed directly at them. They were menacing, their faces obscured by darkness, and they moved with an eerie precision, as if they’d been waiting for this exact moment.

Zach’s face went pale, his posture shifting as he instinctively moved in front of Camille, his protective instinct overriding everything else. Noah, too, took a step closer to her, his gaze never leaving the approaching figures.

The leader of the group stepped forward, his voice calm and cold. “Camille,” he said, his tone sharp and commanding. “You’re coming with us. Make this easy for yourself and cooperate.”

Camille’s heart raced, every muscle in her body tensed. She looked from Zach to Noah, both of them standing protectively by her side, but she knew they were outnumbered, outgunned.

Zach shot her a look, his eyes filled with urgency. “Camille, whatever you do, don’t let them take you. Run, now!”

But before she could move, the group closed in, and she realized she was trapped, with no way out.
