Between Four of Us

Chapter 51

Ch. 51 / 250 Jun 22, 2025

Camille’s heart pounded as she felt the men close in, their shadowed faces and poised weapons sending waves of fear through her. She was trapped, pressed between Zach and Noah, both standing in a tense standoff with the men who had her surrounded. She looked from Zach to Noah, who exchanged grim glances, their mutual animosity momentarily forgotten as they faced this common threat.

“Stay close to me,” Noah murmured, his voice low and steady as he moved protectively in front of her. “We’ll figure a way out of this.”

Zach’s jaw was clenched, his posture rigid as he took a defensive stance beside her. “Camille, just listen to me,” he whispered, his gaze never leaving the men before them. “I promised your father I would protect you. You need to trust me now.”

But before Camille could respond, the leader of the group stepped forward, his eyes cold and unyielding as they focused on her. “Miss Laurent,” he said, his voice calm and calculated, “your father’s unfinished business has left a trail, and you’re standing at the end of it. Cooperate with us, and we can avoid any… unnecessary complications.”

Her throat went dry. “What do you want from me?” she asked, her voice shaking despite her attempt to sound defiant.

The man smiled, a cruel twist of his lips. “Just what your father left behind. Valuable information, assets—things that can make or break the people I work for. We believe he left clues with you, perhaps without you even realizing it.”

Camille’s head spun. She had no idea what he was talking about. Her father had always been protective, had always kept his secrets close, but he’d never hinted at anything like this. She searched her memory, desperate for anything that might give her a clue, but all she could think of were moments, fragments that now felt hauntingly incomplete.

“I don’t know what you’re talking about,” she said, her voice barely above a whisper.

The man’s expression hardened. “Whether you know or not, you’ll be coming with us until you remember. One way or another, we’ll get what we’re looking for.”

Zach tensed, stepping forward. “You’ll have to go through me first,” he growled, his voice filled with a dangerous edge. “She’s not going anywhere with you.”

Noah shifted protectively in front of Camille, his face set with a fierce determination. “We’re not letting you take her. If you know what’s good for you, you’ll leave now.”

The men exchanged glances, their weapons still trained on the three of them. Camille felt her stomach twist with fear, knowing they were outnumbered and unprepared. She didn’t know how they were going to get out of this.

But just as tension hit its peak, the leader’s voice cut through the silence. “Do you even know what you’re protecting her from?” he sneered, his gaze shifting between Zach and Noah. “She’s carrying the burden of her father’s secrets, secrets that got him killed. And if you continue down this path, you’ll end up just like him.”

The words hung in the air, sinking into Camille’s mind with a sickening weight. She stared at the man, her vision blurring, her entire world suddenly tilting.

“Killed?” she whispered, her voice barely audible. “What… what are you talking about?”

The leader met her gaze, his expression dark. “You didn’t know, did you?” he asked, his tone mocking. “Your father’s death wasn’t an accident. He was murdered. For the very information we’re looking for.”

Camille felt as though the ground had fallen away beneath her. Her mind reeled, struggling to process his words, to accept the horrifying reality he was presenting to her. Her father… murdered? She had been told he had disappeared, that he was laying low, hiding for his own safety. But the truth hit her like a brutal wave, crashing through the walls she’d built around her hope.

“No,” she murmured, shaking her head, her voice trembling. “That… that can’t be true.”

Noah and Zach exchanged glances, their expressions darkening. They looked as shocked as she felt, but there was a flicker of understanding in Zach’s eyes, as if he had suspected something terrible yet had hoped against it. His gaze softened as he turned toward her, and he reached out, his hand hovering uncertainly near her shoulder.

“Camille…” he started, his voice thick with sympathy. “I—I’m so sorry. I didn’t want you to find out like this.”

Her chest tightened, a burning sensation spreading through her as the truth settled in. She felt as if she were being torn apart, her mind replaying every memory she had of her father, every moment of laughter, of safety, of love—and now it was tainted by the realization that he was gone. Truly gone. Taken from her in an act of violence.

She stumbled backward, her vision clouding as the weight of it all bore down on her. “He… he’s really gone,” she whispered, barely able to form the words.

Noah took a step closer, his face filled with concern. “Camille, breathe,” he urged, reaching out a steadying hand. “Just focus on my voice. We’re here. We’ll get through this.”

But his voice sounded distant, muffled, as though she were slipping away from the reality around her. She couldn’t breathe; her chest felt heavy, constricted, as if the grief and shock had wrapped themselves around her, squeezing until she could hardly see, hardly feel anything.

The leader took a step forward, his voice sharp and unrelenting. “Now, Miss Laurent,” he said, his tone devoid of sympathy, “you understand the stakes. The choice is simple: come with us, and we’ll spare you the pain your father endured. Or resist, and suffer the same fate.”

Zach’s face twisted in anger as he stood in front of her, shielding her from the man’s gaze. “You’re not touching her,” he snapped, his voice laced with fury. “We’ll get out of this, and you’ll regret the day you tried to come after her.”

But Camille barely registered his words. The reality of her father’s death hit her like a tidal wave, an inescapable force that left her gasping for air, drowning in sorrow and disbelief. Her vision blurred, and she felt herself beginning to sway, her knees weakening as the world spun around her.

She thought of her father’s voice, his comforting presence, the man who had been her rock, her foundation. And now, that foundation was gone, taken by people who saw him as nothing more than a piece in their twisted game.

“Camille!” she heard Noah call out, his voice filled with worry as he reached out to steady her. But his voice sounded miles away, fading into the darkness that was closing in around her.

The edges of her vision dimmed, her knees buckling as the weight of grief and shock finally overwhelmed her. The world spun, tilting dangerously, and she felt herself falling, her mind slipping away as the unbearable reality closed over her.

And then—nothing. She slipped into darkness, unconscious, lost in the depths of grief that had swallowed her whole.
