Between Four of Us

Chapter 46

Ch. 46 / 250 Jun 22, 2025

Camille’s mind raced as she processed Zach’s words. They won’t leave until they get what they want. His tone was dire, his grip on her arm firm as if he were bracing for something. But as she looked past him, watching Noah, Matthew, and Leo methodically move through the hallway, an unsettling doubt crept into her mind. Could it be possible they were here for something other than what Zach had led her to believe?

From the shadows, she watched as Noah glanced around, his expression sharp but not cruel, more searching than menacing. Matthew whispered something to Leo, and though Camille couldn’t make out the words, their faces held a strange intensity, a focus that didn’t seem driven by malice. It almost looked like… worry.

“Zach,” she whispered, pulling her arm free and giving him a searching look. “Are you sure about this? Are you sure they’re here to hurt me?”

Zach’s jaw tightened, his blue eyes hard as he watched the brothers. “Trust me, Camille. I’ve been watching them long enough to know exactly what they want.”

She looked at him, suspicion creeping into her gaze. “You keep telling me what’s best for me, telling me I can trust you. But I’m beginning to wonder—what if you’re hiding something from me?”

Zach’s eyes narrowed. “Camille, they’re dangerous,” he insisted, his voice low. “Your father wouldn’t have kept them away from you if he didn’t have a reason.”

“Or maybe he wouldn’t have kept them away at all!” she shot back, feeling a surge of courage, her voice trembling. “Maybe he would have trusted them more than he trusted you.”

Zach’s face darkened, but before he could respond, the echo of Leo’s voice cut through the hall. “Camille!” he called, his voice carrying a strange edge, almost desperate. “If you can hear us, we’re here to help. Please—just come out.”

She froze, her heart leaping. Zach’s expression was unreadable, but she could see his hands curl into fists, his face drawn into a tense scowl.

“They’re lying,” he hissed, his tone dismissive. “They know you’re hiding, and they’re trying to trick you. They’ll say anything to get you to trust them.”

Camille’s eyes flicked between Zach and the brothers, doubt and confusion tugging at her. Leo’s voice sounded genuine, desperate even. And if they were here to harm her, why call out with such urgency? She couldn’t shake the feeling that something was terribly wrong, that Zach was hiding more than he’d let on.

“Camille, please!” Matthew called out, his voice steady and strong. “We know you’re scared, but we’re here to take you somewhere safe. We don’t have much time.”

Zach’s face twisted with frustration, his grip tightening on her arm. “They’re lying,” he insisted. “You can’t believe them, Camille. They’re here for themselves, for whatever they think your father left behind.”

“No,” she said softly, pulling away. “I don’t think they are.”

Zach’s eyes flashed with something dark and unreadable. “You’re making a mistake,” he warned, his tone low and dangerous. “If you go to them, you’ll be putting yourself in the very hands of the people who’ve wanted your family destroyed for years.”

“Or maybe,” she countered, finding her voice steady and strong, “you’re the one who’s been lying to me.”

For a moment, they stared at each other, the tension thick in the air. Camille’s heart raced as she stepped back, her eyes darting toward the brothers, who had just moved closer, their faces resolute yet hopeful.

“Camille!” Noah’s voice was louder this time, and she could hear the desperation in it. “We’re here because your father asked us to protect you. He trusted us. Please, we don’t have much time!”

She glanced back at Zach, searching his face for any hint of honesty, but his expression remained dark, his jaw set, and his eyes unyielding.

“Why would they lie about that?” she demanded. “If my father trusted them—”

“Because they want the same thing everyone else does,” Zach interrupted, his voice taut. “They want power, information, and they’ll use you to get it. Your father may have trusted them once, but things change, Camille. People change.”

She shook her head, stepping further back. “And maybe that’s true for you, too. Maybe I shouldn’t have trusted you from the start.”

Before he could respond, she turned and darted into the open hallway, running toward the brothers. Zach’s voice echoed behind her, filled with frustration and anger.

“Camille! Come back here—don’t do this!”

But she didn’t stop. Her instincts screamed for her to keep moving, to run toward the brothers who now looked relieved to see her. Noah held out his arms, his expression filled with a mixture of relief and concern.

“Camille!” he called, reaching out as she drew closer.

When she reached them, she felt Noah’s arm wrap protectively around her shoulders. The touch was steadying, grounding, and she found herself clinging to it, feeling an unexpected surge of comfort.

“We’ve got you,” Noah whispered, his voice low but filled with assurance. “You’re safe now.”

Camille looked up at him, her eyes wide with both relief and confusion. “I don’t understand… Zach said you were here to hurt me, that you wanted whatever my father left behind.”

Leo shook his head, his gaze softening as he met her eyes. “Camille, we’re here because your father trusted us, not because we want anything from you. He asked us to protect you, and we’re here to do that, no matter what Zach has told you.”

Matthew nodded, his expression serious. “Your father knew there were people after him, people who would do anything to find what he’d hidden. He told us to keep an eye on you, to make sure you’d be safe if anything happened to him.”

Camille’s heart sank. “So… Zach was lying to me? All of this—he’s been using me?”

“We don’t know his motives exactly,” Noah replied, his face clouding. “But we do know he’s not who he says he is. He’s kept you close, but not for the reasons he claimed.”

Suddenly, a door at the end of the hallway creaked open, and Zach appeared, his face shadowed and his expression unreadable. He took slow, measured steps toward them, his eyes fixed on Camille, unflinching.

“Camille,” he called out, his voice calm but filled with a dangerous edge. “You don’t understand what’s happening here. They’re twisting the truth. I’m the one who’s been protecting you, not them.”

Noah stepped forward, placing himself between Camille and Zach, his shoulders squared, his stance protective. “Stay back, Zach,” he warned. “You’ve done enough damage.”

Zach’s eyes flashed with something dark, something she hadn’t seen before, and a cold smile crept onto his face. “You’re making a grave mistake, all of you,” he said quietly, his gaze locking onto Camille. “You think you’re safe with them? You have no idea what you’re risking.”

Camille’s heart pounded as the tension between the men grew, each side poised and ready, the atmosphere charged with unspoken threats. She felt her hands tremble as she looked from Zach to the brothers, confusion and fear warring inside her.

“What do you mean?” she managed, her voice barely a whisper. “What are you trying to say, Zach?”

Zach’s smile widened, his gaze turning cold. “I mean, Camille,” he said slowly, each word laced with venom, “you have something far more valuable than you know. And if you stay with them… they’ll take it from you, just like everyone else.”
