Between Four of Us

Chapter 55

Ch. 55 / 250 Jun 22, 2025

The drive to her father’s old office felt like an eternity. Camille sat silently in the backseat, her mind swirling with memories of him, of the life they’d shared before everything had unraveled. The brothers, especially Noah, were focused, their faces set in steely determination as they navigated the quiet, darkened streets toward the one place they hoped would finally reveal the secrets her father had left behind.

When they arrived, the building was dark and empty, its towering structure looming over them. The silence was heavy as they entered, each footstep echoing down the narrow hallways lined with doors leading to offices long abandoned for the night. Camille’s heart pounded as they reached her father’s old office, its door still bearing his name in faded lettering.

Inside, the room smelled faintly of leather and cedar, a scent that instantly reminded her of him. She took a deep breath, steadying herself as she moved toward the heavy oak desk in the center of the room. Everything was just as he’d left it: neatly organized, every item in its place. But her gaze went to the corner, where a small, unassuming safe sat tucked beneath a stack of old files.

Camille knelt down beside the safe, running her fingers over the cold metal surface. Her father had never told her the combination, but something deep in her memory tugged at her, as if she already knew the answer. She closed her eyes, focusing, her fingers instinctively moving over the dial.

Slowly, she turned the numbers, a date—her birth date—and with a final click, the door swung open. Inside the safe was a small stack of papers, neatly arranged, along with a single flash drive. Camille’s hands trembled as she reached for them, feeling the weight of the secrets her father had hidden.

Noah knelt beside her, his gaze fixed on the contents of the safe. “This must be it,” he murmured, his voice filled with a mix of relief and curiosity. “Your father’s last safeguard.”

Camille handed him the stack of papers, her gaze shifting to the flash drive nestled in her palm. “Whatever’s on here… it’s what they’ve been looking for,” she whispered, her voice filled with awe and trepidation.

“Let’s see what we’re dealing with,” Matthew said, pulling a laptop from his bag and setting it on the desk. They plugged in the flash drive, and the screen lit up, displaying a series of encrypted files. Noah’s fingers flew over the keyboard, bypassing the security measures with practiced ease.

Within moments, the files opened, revealing a series of documents, messages, and financial records. Camille’s eyes widened as she scanned the contents. Her father had kept meticulous records of powerful people, tracking transactions, favors, and secrets that, if exposed, could bring entire empires crashing down. He had hidden away the leverage he’d gained over years of work, knowing it could either protect or destroy her if it ever fell into the wrong hands.

“No wonder they’re after this,” Leo murmured, his voice low as he studied the files. “This information… it’s like a weapon. With this, you could ruin the people who killed your father.”

Camille’s hands clenched into fists, a surge of anger and resolve filling her. “Then that’s what I’ll do. If they took him from me, I’ll use his work to take everything from them.”

Noah placed a reassuring hand on her shoulder, his gaze filled with pride and understanding. “We’ll be with you every step of the way, Camille. You’re not alone in this.”

A sense of relief settled over her, a feeling that she’d finally taken control of her fate. For the first time, she felt like she had power, a weapon that could turn the tables on those who had turned her life into chaos. She’d finish what her father had started and bring justice to his name.

The four of them left the office, a renewed sense of purpose carrying them as they returned to their temporary safe house. As they sat around the table, making plans and discussing their next moves, Camille felt something she hadn’t in a long time: hope.

But as dawn broke, the calm was shattered by a sharp knock at the door. Everyone froze, tension filling the room as they exchanged glances. Noah stood, his face wary as he moved to open the door, his hand instinctively reaching for the weapon at his side.

He opened the door a crack, and his expression shifted from guarded to shocked. Camille’s heart raced as she saw a tall, striking woman standing in the doorway. Her dark hair fell in loose waves over her shoulders, and she wore a confident, slightly smug smile that hinted at a history with Noah.

“Noah,” she purred, her voice smooth and laced with amusement. “You’re a hard man to track down.”

Camille’s chest tightened as she watched the woman’s eyes flick from Noah to her, assessing, calculating. There was something unnerving about her presence, an energy that hinted at both charm and danger. Noah’s reaction only made it worse—he was tense, hesitant, and yet there was a flicker of familiarity in his eyes that made Camille’s stomach drop.

“Noelle,” Noah finally said, his voice cold but respectful. “What are you doing here?”

Noelle laughed softly, stepping forward without waiting for an invitation. “What? No hug for an old friend?”

Noah’s jaw tightened. “We’re a little busy here.”

“Busy with your latest ‘project’?” Noelle’s gaze shifted back to Camille, her eyes narrowing as if she were sizing her up. “Or should I say… your latest distraction?”

Camille felt a pang of insecurity as Noelle’s gaze lingered on her, assessing her in a way that made her feel exposed. She tried to keep her expression neutral, unwilling to let this woman—whoever she was—see any weakness.

“What do you want, Noelle?” Noah’s voice held a frustrated edge, his patience clearly fraying.

Noelle’s smile widened as she leaned against the doorframe, her gaze flicking between Noah and Camille with clear amusement. “I came to offer my help. You think I don’t know about the files, the little vendetta you’re planning? I’ve got resources, Noah. Resources that could make this easier… for all of us.”

Leo stepped forward, crossing his arms as he regarded Noelle with suspicion. “And why would you want to help?”

She shrugged, her expression playful yet unreadable. “Let’s just say I have my own score to settle. And if helping you puts a dent in a few powerful egos, well, I’m all in.”

Camille’s heart pounded, the warning bells ringing louder in her mind. She didn’t trust this woman, didn’t like the way she was inserting herself into their plan, as if she already belonged. She looked to Noah, who seemed torn, his guarded expression betraying a flicker of something Camille couldn’t quite read.

Noelle met Camille’s gaze, a smirk playing at her lips. “You’re not worried, are you, Camille?” she asked, her tone both playful and mocking. “I mean, Noah and I go way back. I wouldn’t want to… disrupt anything.”

Camille felt the weight of her words, a challenge hidden behind the smile. She clenched her jaw, her resolve hardening as she realized that Noelle wasn’t just here to help—she was here to upend everything she and the brothers had built.
