Between Four of Us

Chapter 61

Ch. 61 / 250 Jun 22, 2025

As Camille held the note from her father, she felt a rush of emotions flood her. His words were simple but powerful, resonating within her in a way she hadn’t expected. Follow your heart. But her heart felt anything but clear—it was tangled with the memories and connections she shared with each of the brothers. She couldn’t deny the pull she felt toward each of them, but her father’s words urged her to choose the path that resonated most deeply.

Unable to sleep, Camille sat in her small living room, her mind racing. Just then, a gentle knock at the door pulled her from her thoughts. She rose, her heart racing as she opened it to find Noah, Matthew, and Leo standing there, their expressions shadowed with worry and intensity.

“We couldn’t leave things unsettled,” Noah said softly, his gaze steady as he looked into her eyes. “You mean a lot to us, Camille. And I don’t think any of us wanted to end the night without being honest about that.”

Camille’s heart pounded as she stepped aside, letting them in. They took seats around her, the air charged with a mixture of tension and warmth, as if they were all standing at the edge of something unknown.

Matthew spoke up, his voice as calm and grounded as ever. “We know it’s complicated,” he said, his eyes gentle but resolute. “We’ve all been through so much together, and you’ve come to mean something different to each of us. We respect whatever choice you make, but we wanted you to know… how deeply we each feel for you.”

Leo, usually so carefree, now looked at her with an uncharacteristic seriousness. “Camille,” he murmured, his voice barely above a whisper. “You’re more than just someone we protect. You’ve become part of us. I don’t know how else to say it.”

Noah placed a steady hand on hers, his gaze intense. “Whatever you decide, Camille, know that we’ll support you. But we had to tell you how we feel. How I feel.” His hand lingered, his touch grounding her, reminding her of the quiet strength and thoughtfulness he had always shown.

Camille felt a wave of emotion rise within her, the depth of their words stirring something profound. Each of them had been there for her in ways she hadn’t fully understood until now, and she felt a connection to each one that went beyond words.

A silence settled over the room, heavy and contemplative, each of them lost in their own thoughts as they grappled with the unspoken feelings that hung in the air. Camille knew that this was a moment of decision, a moment that could change everything. She took a deep breath, letting her gaze travel to each of them, feeling the weight of her choice.

“I don’t know if I have the answer yet,” she admitted, her voice soft but filled with determination. “But I know that each of you means something important to me, something I don’t want to lose.”

Noah nodded, his face calm but filled with understanding. “Then take your time, Camille. We’ll be here, no matter what.”

As the night wore on, they remained close, the unspoken tension giving way to a sense of quiet companionship. Camille’s heart felt heavy yet hopeful, knowing that no matter what decision she made, she was surrounded by people who truly cared about her. But even as they sat together, her mind couldn’t shake the feeling that something was still unfinished, something lurking just beyond the horizon.

And then, as if in answer to her unspoken thoughts, her phone buzzed. Camille glanced at the screen, frowning as she saw an unknown number. She hesitated, then picked it up, her pulse quickening as she pressed it to her ear.

“Hello?”

The voice on the other end was low, rough, and filled with an urgency that sent chills down her spine. “Camille?”

“Yes… who is this?”

There was a pause, followed by a sigh. “This is Detective Reid. I worked on your father’s case.”

Camille’s heart skipped a beat, her body tensing as memories of her father’s mysterious death came rushing back. “Why… why are you calling me now?”

“Because there’s something you need to know. Something I couldn’t tell you before.” His voice was heavy, filled with a seriousness that made her grip the phone tighter. “Your father’s death… it wasn’t just a random attack. It was part of a larger cover-up, one that goes higher than anyone realized.”

Camille’s breath caught. She’d spent so long trying to piece together the truth, and now, with this detective’s revelation, a new layer of mystery seemed to unfold before her.

“What are you saying?” she whispered, her voice barely audible.

“I’m saying that your father uncovered something dangerous, something that got him killed. And now… now they know that you have the files. You’re not safe, Camille. Not even with your current protection.”

Camille’s eyes widened, her gaze darting to the brothers, who were watching her with concern. She felt their support, but the detective’s words hung in her mind like a dark warning.

“Where can I meet you?” she asked, her voice filled with determination. If there was more to her father’s death, she needed to know the truth, no matter the cost.

The detective gave her an address—a secluded spot just outside town. “But come alone. I can’t risk anyone else knowing about this.”

The line went dead, leaving Camille standing there, her heart pounding as she processed his words. She turned to the brothers, who were watching her with a mixture of worry and curiosity.

“Camille, what is it?” Noah asked, his tone laced with concern.

She hesitated, unsure how much to tell them. But as she looked at each of them, the warmth of their presence grounding her, she knew that she couldn’t do this alone. She needed their support, needed to feel that sense of family that they had offered her.

“There’s something more to my father’s death,” she said, her voice shaking slightly. “A detective just called me. He says he knows what really happened… and he wants me to meet him. Alone.”

The brothers exchanged wary glances, their expressions hardening with a mixture of protectiveness and suspicion.

“Camille, that sounds like a trap,” Matthew said, his tone cautious. “We can’t let you go alone.”

“But he’s the only one who might have answers,” she insisted, desperation creeping into her voice. “I need to know the truth.”

Noah placed a reassuring hand on her shoulder, his gaze steady. “Then we go with you, but we stay hidden. If anything goes wrong, we’ll be there to protect you.”

Camille’s heart lifted slightly, grateful for their support. She nodded, her mind racing as she prepared herself for what lay ahead. Together, they made a plan, agreeing that Camille would go to the meeting spot while the brothers stayed out of sight, ready to intervene if needed.

As they drove through the quiet streets, Camille’s thoughts drifted back to her father, to the secrets he had kept, the sacrifices he had made. She felt closer to him than ever, as if he were guiding her toward the truth that had been buried for so long.

When they reached the secluded location, Camille stepped out of the car, her heart pounding as she approached the meeting spot. She scanned the darkness, her eyes searching for any sign of the detective.

But as the minutes ticked by, an unsettling feeling crept over her. The air was thick with silence, and she couldn’t shake the sense that she was being watched. She glanced around, her instincts on high alert.

And then, a figure emerged from the shadows, stepping into the dim light. It wasn’t the detective.

It was someone else entirely—someone she never expected to see again.

“Hello, Camille,” the figure said, a smile curling on their lips. “Did you really think you could bury the past so easily?”
