Between Four of Us

Chapter 53

Ch. 53 / 250 Jun 22, 2025

Camille’s eyes fluttered open, her head throbbing as she struggled to regain her bearings. The memory of Matthew’s words—your father was betrayed by someone close to him—echoed in her mind, compounding the grief and anger swirling within her. She was seated on a worn leather couch in the dim, industrial room where the brothers had brought her, surrounded by walls that felt both protective and confining. She took a steadying breath, letting the weight of her father’s betrayal sink in.

As her vision cleared, she noticed Leo sitting across from her, his gaze warm and steady, a comforting contrast to the whirlwind in her heart. He offered a soft, reassuring smile. “How are you feeling, Camille?” he asked gently.

Camille hesitated, emotions tangled within her. The brothers had saved her, shielded her, and been there when she’d needed them most. But Leo had been different—quietly watching over her, listening, never imposing, always there when she was overwhelmed or felt alone. Amidst the chaos of her father’s death, Leo had been her anchor, her calm in the storm.

“Better,” she murmured, meeting his gaze and allowing a slight, grateful smile to cross her lips. “Thanks to you.”

His eyes softened, and something passed between them—an unspoken understanding, a comfort she hadn’t realized she’d been yearning for. In that moment, she felt herself drawn to him, the fear and grief melting away in the warmth of his presence. Without thinking, she leaned forward, closing the distance between them, her heart pounding as her lips met his.

For a moment, the world stilled. The kiss was soft, filled with both the tenderness and unspoken tension that had been building between them. She felt his hand cup her cheek, gentle and hesitant, as if he couldn’t quite believe it was happening.

But the spell was shattered as a loud gasp came from the doorway. Camille pulled back, her heart racing as she looked up to see Noah and Matthew standing there, their faces etched with shock and betrayal.

“What the hell is this?” Noah demanded, his voice tight with anger, his fists clenched at his sides.

Matthew’s gaze hardened, his eyes flicking between Camille and Leo, hurt and disappointment flashing across his face. “We made a pact,” he said, his voice low and seething. “Camille was off-limits. We agreed, Leo.”

Leo’s jaw tightened as he looked from his brothers to Camille, his face resolute. “I didn’t plan this,” he replied, his voice steady but defiant. “But maybe it’s time we stop treating Camille like an obligation. She’s not a prize to be won, and she’s not our responsibility to control.”

Noah stepped forward, his face flushed with anger. “We’re not trying to control her! We’re trying to protect her. This is about keeping her safe, Leo—not about following some crush.”

Leo’s eyes flashed with anger, and he squared his shoulders, standing his ground. “This isn’t about a ‘crush,’ Noah. It’s about respect. Camille deserves the truth, and she deserves to make her own choices. All I did was respect that.”

Tension crackled in the air as the brothers faced off, their voices rising in the confined space. Camille watched, her heart sinking as the anger simmered between them, each brother seeming to forget the real threat that still loomed outside these walls.

“Enough!” she shouted, her voice breaking through their argument. They turned to her, surprise flickering in their eyes as she stepped between them. “I appreciate everything you’ve done for me, but I’m not a decision you get to argue over. I’ve lost too much already—my father, my home. I won’t lose myself, too. So stop this… please.”

But before anyone could respond, the door behind them burst open, and a figure stepped into the room. Zach stood in the doorway, his face twisted with fury and desperation. He looked like a man who had been pushed to the edge, his eyes fixed on Camille with an unsettling intensity.

“I told you,” he hissed, his voice barely controlled. “I told you I would always be watching. And yet, you chose them. You betrayed me, Camille.”

Camille’s blood ran cold, her heart pounding as she took a step back. “Zach, this isn’t about you,” she said, her voice trembling. “This was never about you.”

But Zach’s face contorted with rage, and before anyone could react, he pulled out a gun, leveling it at Camille with a trembling hand. “If I can’t protect you, no one will,” he spat, his voice filled with twisted resolve.

Noah and Matthew moved instantly, placing themselves between Camille and Zach, their faces set with determination. “Put the gun down, Zach,” Matthew commanded, his voice steady. “This doesn’t have to end like this.”

But Zach only shook his head, his hand steady as he aimed the gun, his eyes wild. “You think you can take her from me? You think any of you are worthy of her?”

In that split second, Leo lunged forward, tackling Zach with all his strength, sending them both crashing to the floor. The gun went off, the sound deafening in the enclosed room. Camille’s heart lurched as she saw Zach collapse, blood spreading across his chest as he lay motionless on the ground, his eyes wide with shock.

Leo scrambled to his feet, panting as he backed away from Zach’s lifeless body, his face pale. The brothers looked on, their faces a mix of horror and relief, as the gravity of what had just happened settled over them.

Camille’s legs felt weak, and she sank onto the couch, her mind struggling to process the scene before her. Zach—the man who had once been her protector, who had watched over her with a twisted sense of devotion—was gone. The constant threat he had posed, the obsession that had driven him to such dark places, had come to an end in an instant.

But even as the shock began to subside, a gnawing fear crept in. Zach had been so certain, so convinced that others would come for her. The men who had killed her father, who had destroyed the brothers’ home—they were still out there. And now, with Zach gone, she felt more vulnerable than ever.

Noah crouched beside her, placing a reassuring hand on her shoulder. “Camille, are you alright?”

She looked at him, her voice barely a whisper. “This isn’t over, is it?”

Matthew shook his head, his face grim. “Zach may be gone, but his words weren’t just the ramblings of a madman. Whoever killed your father… they’re still out there, and they won’t stop until they get what they’re after.”

Leo’s gaze was steady as he looked at Camille, his expression filled with determination. “We’re going to figure this out, Camille. Together. We’ll find whatever it is your father left behind, and we’ll end this.”

But as the brothers gathered around her, offering her a sense of protection, Camille couldn’t shake the feeling that they were running out of time. She looked at Zach’s body one last time, a haunting sense of foreboding settling over her.

Outside, a soft beeping noise broke the silence, followed by a flicker of red light just visible through the cracked doorway. Camille’s stomach dropped as she recognized the sound.

“Do you hear that?” she whispered, her heart racing as the beeping grew louder.

Noah’s face went pale, his eyes widening. “That’s… that’s a tracker.”

Camille’s blood ran cold. Someone knew they were here.
