Between Four of Us

Chapter 48

Ch. 48 / 250 Jun 22, 2025

Camille sank into the backseat of the car, feeling waves of relief mixed with exhaustion. She was finally free from Zach’s grasp and the twisted obsession he’d masked as protection. The brothers—Noah, Matthew, and Leo—sat up front, their faces a mixture of tension and relief as they drove her to what was, for the time being, a safe place: their own home. She couldn’t help but feel grateful for them. They had risked everything to pull her out of that nightmare, to get her away from Zach and whatever darkness had fueled his control over her.

As they neared the neighborhood, Camille allowed herself to relax, just a little. She’d only been to the brothers’ home a few times, but she remembered it as a place of warmth and laughter, a kind of sanctuary in its own right. It was a safe, familiar place, where they’d shared stories and late-night conversations, and the memories of those simpler moments were enough to soothe some of her fear.

Noah glanced at her in the rearview mirror, his face softening as he caught her gaze. “You doing okay back there, Camille?”

She managed a weary smile. “I am, thanks to you guys. I don’t know what I’d have done if you hadn’t come for me.”

Leo turned around from the passenger seat, giving her a reassuring grin. “Don’t worry about it. We weren’t going to leave you with him. You’re safe with us.”

She nodded, feeling the comfort of their words settle over her like a warm blanket. For the first time since she’d been taken, she felt like things might finally be alright. The car turned onto the brothers’ street, and Camille let out a breath, preparing to leave the horrors of the night behind her.

But just as the car rounded the corner, a strange smell filled the air—something acrid and smoky. Camille’s stomach dropped, an uneasy feeling prickling at the back of her mind.

“Do you guys smell that?” she asked, her voice wavering.

The brothers exchanged tense glances, and Noah pressed down on the accelerator, the car speeding up as they got closer to the source of the smell. Camille leaned forward, her heart pounding as they came into view of their house. But what she saw made her heart stop.

The brothers’ house was engulfed in flames.

Fiery tendrils licked up the sides of the walls, the roof crackling and caving under the heat, sending sparks and embers spiraling into the night. The entire structure was ablaze, casting an eerie orange glow over the street. Camille’s mouth went dry, disbelief filling her as she stared at the house, the warmth and safety it had represented to her now turned into an inferno.

Noah cursed under his breath, slamming on the brakes as they came to a sudden halt. Camille barely registered him throwing the car into park as she opened the door, stumbling out and staring helplessly at the fire. “No… how is this happening?” she whispered, her voice breaking.

The brothers scrambled out after her, each of their faces painted with shock and devastation as they looked at the house they had called home. For a moment, they stood in stunned silence, the crackling flames filling the air with a sound both mesmerizing and horrifying.

“This… this can’t be real,” Leo murmured, his face pale as he took a step forward, his gaze fixed on the flames. “Everything we had…”

Matthew clenched his fists, his jaw set as he watched their home being reduced to ashes. “This wasn’t an accident,” he said through gritted teeth, anger simmering in his eyes. “Someone did this. Someone wanted us to lose everything.”

Camille’s heart sank as the full weight of their words hit her. This wasn’t a random fire—it was a message. A warning. The people who were after her father’s secrets, after her, were willing to do whatever it took to keep her unprotected, vulnerable. First Zach had come for her, and now, it seemed, others were targeting anyone who stood between her and whatever secrets her father had left behind.

She looked at Noah, whose face was dark with anger and pain as he watched the flames consuming everything they owned. She could see the betrayal etched in his expression, the loss, and the fury. Her heart twisted, knowing that they’d taken her in, protected her, and now they’d paid the price for it.

“I’m so sorry,” she whispered, her voice choked with guilt. “This… this is my fault.”

Noah turned to her, shaking his head firmly. “No, Camille. This isn’t on you. Whoever did this would’ve come for us sooner or later. We made our choice to protect you, and we’d do it again.”

“But your home…” she trailed off, her words swallowed by a sob. “You’ve lost everything because of me.”

Matthew placed a steady hand on her shoulder, his eyes filled with quiet determination. “You’re part of our family, Camille. We protect our own. We knew the risks.”

Leo nodded, a sad smile tugging at his lips. “Besides, it’s just a house. We’re all still standing, and as long as we have each other, that’s what matters.”

Camille felt her throat tighten as she looked at them, her heart aching with gratitude and guilt. She wanted to believe them, to accept their reassurances, but the flames consuming the brothers’ house felt like a dark omen, a sign that the people after her were relentless, and that no one was truly safe.

Sirens sounded in the distance, and within moments, fire trucks pulled up to the curb. Firefighters jumped out, shouting instructions and spraying jets of water at the blaze, but it was clear that the house was already beyond saving.

Camille watched the scene unfold, her mind spinning with questions and fears. If someone had targeted the brothers’ home, they were likely being watched. Whoever was behind this was ruthless and willing to destroy anything and anyone that stood in their way.

“We need to get out of here,” Noah said, his voice low and urgent. “If they know where we live, they might know our other moves. We can’t stay anywhere predictable.”

Matthew nodded, glancing at Camille with a serious expression. “They’ve made it clear they’re after you, Camille. We have to keep moving, stay one step ahead.”

She swallowed, feeling the weight of the situation settle over her. “Where will we go?” she asked, her voice barely above a whisper.

Noah exchanged a look with his brothers, a sense of resolve passing between them. “We’ll take you somewhere they can’t find us,” he said. “Someplace they wouldn’t expect.”

Before she could ask where, Matthew’s phone buzzed. He pulled it out, glancing at the screen, and his expression darkened as he read the message. He looked up, meeting Camille’s gaze with a mixture of worry and determination.

“We need to leave now,” he said, urgency threading through his tone. “They know more than we thought.”

Camille’s stomach twisted as she climbed back into the car, feeling the fear tighten around her heart once more. She thought she’d escaped the worst, but it was clear that this nightmare was far from over. As they pulled away from the burning house, she looked over her shoulder, watching the flames consume the last bit of safety she’d known, and a single thought echoed in her mind:

If they were willing to destroy the brothers’ home, what else would they do to find me?
