Between Four of Us

Chapter 40

Ch. 40 / 250 Jun 22, 2025

As they drove home, the atmosphere in the car was tense but relieved, the adrenaline still coursing through their veins from the chaos they had just escaped. Camille sat in the back seat next to Ava, who was still trying to process everything that had happened. Matthew drove while Leo kept an eye on the rearview mirror, glancing back occasionally to make sure they weren’t being followed.

“We need to figure out our next steps,” Matthew said, his voice steady but urgent. “We can’t let Victor’s associates know where we are.”

Camille nodded, her mind racing. “What if they come after us? What if we’re not safe anywhere?”

“We’ll be safe,” Leo assured her, but there was a hint of uncertainty in his voice. “We just need a plan.”

Suddenly, without warning, a car swerved into their lane, headlights blinding them as it sped toward them. Matthew slammed on the brakes, but it was too late.

The impact was deafening, metal crumpling and glass shattering as their car spun out of control. Camille’s world turned upside down as chaos engulfed them. Everything happened in slow motion—the screech of tires, the crunch of metal, and the gut-wrenching feeling of being thrown around in the confines of the vehicle.

When the world finally stopped spinning, Camille sat in stunned silence, her heart racing as she looked around. The car was a mangled mess, smoke billowing from the engine, and a piercing pain shot through her side. She gasped, trying to catch her breath.

“Everyone okay?” Matthew’s voice broke through the haze. He was leaning against the steering wheel, blood trickling down his forehead.

“Leo?” Camille called out, fear gripping her heart.

“I’m here!” Leo replied, wincing as he tried to move. “Ava, are you alright?”

“I think so,” she said, her voice shaky. “But Noah—where’s Noah?”

Camille turned, and her heart dropped as she saw Noah slumped against the passenger seat, his face pale and sweat glistening on his forehead. “Noah!” she screamed, scrambling to unbuckle her seatbelt.

“Noah!” Leo shouted, panic creeping into his voice as he reached for his brother. They both struggled to pull Noah from the wreckage, his body heavy and unresponsive.

“He’s not moving!” Camille cried, tears welling in her eyes as she felt the weight of dread settle over her.

Matthew managed to pull himself upright, wincing in pain as he looked over at Noah. “We need to get him out of here. He’s hurt badly!”

With a surge of adrenaline, they worked together to free Noah from the wreckage. As they pulled him into the light, they could see the blood seeping from a deep gash on his leg and the bruises forming on his arms and face.

“Noah, can you hear me?” Camille shook him gently, fear tightening her chest.

Noah blinked slowly, his eyes unfocused. “Camille?” he whispered, his voice weak.

“I’m here, I’m here,” she said, her heart breaking at the sight of him so vulnerable. “We’re going to get you help. Just hold on.”

In the distance, they heard the sound of sirens approaching. But as they looked around, Camille’s heart sank further. The car was a wreck, and they were in the middle of nowhere. They couldn’t wait for help to arrive.

“We need to get him to a hospital,” Matthew said urgently, glancing at the others. “Ava, can you call 911?”

Ava nodded, fumbling for her phone as she pressed it to her ear, her hands shaking. “Yes, I’m calling for help!” she shouted into the receiver.

As the dispatcher asked questions, Camille looked back at Noah, who was now losing color in his face. “Noah, stay with us. You need to keep talking to me, okay?”

“Camille… I can’t…” he gasped, pain evident in his eyes.

“Just hold on. You’re going to be okay,” Camille said, trying to sound brave despite the fear coursing through her veins.

Minutes felt like hours as they waited for help. When the ambulance finally arrived, the paramedics rushed to Noah’s side, assessing his injuries. Camille felt helpless as they worked, her heart pounding in her chest.

“Get him stabilized,” one of the paramedics ordered, his voice firm as he began to wrap Noah’s leg. “We need to get him to the hospital fast.”

As they lifted Noah onto a stretcher, Camille felt a wave of panic wash over her. “Will he be okay?” she asked, her voice breaking.

“He’s going to need a blood transfusion,” the paramedic replied. “We’ll do everything we can.”

Camille felt a knot tighten in her stomach. She had heard about blood transfusions, but never thought she would be in a situation where one was needed.

Once they were in the ambulance, Noah lay pale and unconscious, and Camille could barely breathe. The paramedics worked quickly, starting an IV and connecting it to blood bags.

“Does anyone know their blood type?” one of the paramedics asked urgently.

“I—I don’t know mine,” Camille stammered, panic rising in her throat. “But Noah is A-positive! I think I remember that.”

“Is anyone here A-positive?” the paramedic asked, looking around.

“I am,” Matthew said, his voice steady despite the chaos. “I’ll do it. Just save him.”

“No, you shouldn’t!” Camille protested, feeling a surge of protectiveness. “You’re hurt too!”

“I can’t let him go like this, Camille,” Matthew insisted, determination in his eyes. “He’s my brother.”

Before she could argue further, the paramedics quickly prepped Matthew for the donation. As they took his blood, Camille watched, her heart heavy with worry.

“Just focus on Noah,” Matthew said, his voice low as he lay back, wincing slightly. “He needs you right now.”

Hours later, they arrived at the hospital, where the doctors and nurses whisked Noah away for treatment. Camille, Leo, and Ava stood in the waiting room, the weight of everything crashing down around them.

“What if he doesn’t make it?” Camille whispered, tears welling in her eyes.
