Between Four of Us

Kidnapped Again

Ch. 41 / 250 Jun 22, 2025

After a month of restless nights and hospital visits, Camille could finally breathe. Noah was home. They’d been through so much, and seeing him sitting on their worn-out couch, laughing, and smiling, felt like a dream. So, to celebrate, Camille organized a small gathering in their cozy living room, inviting only a few close friends and family. Balloons floated near the ceiling, and plates of Noah’s favorite snacks covered every surface.

“Hey, you have to try these cheese puffs!” Camille said, grinning as she held out a plate to Noah.

He chuckled, reaching for one. “Didn’t realize I missed junk food this much,” he admitted, taking a bite and leaning back into the couch, looking around at the cheerful faces. His face softened. “Thanks for this, Camille. I can’t believe you did all this.”

“You deserve it,” she replied, patting his arm. “We all needed a bit of joy.”

Everyone chatted and laughed, recounting funny stories and catching up on lost time. The atmosphere was light and warm, and Camille felt a surge of relief seeing Noah’s smile. For the first time in weeks, she could let go of the fear and tension that had gripped her so tightly.

As the night went on, Camille decided to step outside to get a breath of fresh air. She slipped away quietly, not wanting to interrupt the flow of laughter inside. The evening was calm, the air cool against her skin, and she closed her eyes, soaking it all in.

She heard the faint sound of music and laughter still coming from the house and allowed herself a small, peaceful smile. It was good to have a moment alone, a moment to let the reality sink in—Noah was safe. They were safe. She walked a few steps down the porch, stretching her arms, inhaling the crisp night air.

Just as she turned to head back, she caught a shadow in the corner of her eye, but before she could process it, a rough hand clamped over her mouth. Her eyes went wide as a damp, chemical-smelling rag was pressed against her nose and mouth. She struggled, heart pounding, but her limbs felt heavy, her vision blurry. The last thing she saw was the dim porch light fading before her world went black.

Camille’s eyes fluttered open slowly, her head throbbing with a dull, persistent ache. The ceiling above her was unfamiliar, ornate with a design she didn’t recognize. She blinked, struggling to sit up, and realized she was lying on a plush bed draped in luxurious sheets. The room around her was grand, almost surreal, decorated in soft whites and golds with elegant furniture that looked straight out of a magazine.

Panic surged through her veins. “Where…where am I?” she whispered, her voice barely audible.

The door creaked open, and a young man with blonde hair walked in. His expression softened as he looked at her, but there was something unsettling in his gaze.

“You’re awake,” he said with a faint smile. “Good. You’re even more beautiful than they described.”

Camille tensed, her body still sluggish as she forced herself to sit up fully. “Who are you?” she demanded, her voice shaking slightly. “Where am I?”

The man’s smile widened. “My name is Zachary. Zachary Knight. You’re safe here, Camille.”

“Safe?” she repeated, her voice growing stronger with her rising anger. “You call this safe? You kidnapped me! Where am I? Why did you take me?”

Zachary moved closer, leaning against the bedpost casually as if they were just having a friendly conversation. “I’m keeping you safe, Camille. From them. From the people who would hurt you.”

Her brow furrowed. “Who would hurt me? And what do you mean, ‘them’? None of this makes sense!”

He sighed, tilting his head. “You’ve been marked, Camille. The people who’ve been after your family—they’re closer than you think. I know this sounds… dramatic, but your life is in danger.”

“Stop with the games,” she snapped, the fire in her voice surprising even herself. “Where is my father? He’ll come for me, and you’ll be in so much trouble!”

Zachary’s face darkened, and for a moment, she thought she saw a flicker of genuine sadness in his eyes. “Your father…” he began slowly, his voice softer. “He entrusted you to me, Camille. He knew the risks, the dangers, and he wanted you to be safe. That’s why he brought you here.”

“Why he…” she began, trailing off as the pieces tried to fit together in her mind. “No. No, my father wouldn’t just leave me. He wouldn’t—”

“He’s gone, Camille,” Zachary said, his voice low. “I’m sorry. He’s dead.”

The words hit her like a punch to the gut, leaving her breathless. She shook her head, unwilling to believe him, to accept the possibility that her father—her rock—was gone.

“No,” she whispered, eyes brimming with tears. “You’re lying. This is just another one of your tricks.”

“I wish it were,” he replied quietly. “But it’s the truth. He knew the people who were coming for him wouldn’t stop at him. They would come for you, too. That’s why he made me promise to protect you.”

Camille clenched her fists, forcing herself to hold back the tears threatening to spill. “Why should I believe anything you say? I don’t know you. I don’t trust you.”

“I don’t expect you to trust me,” Zachary replied. “But I do expect you to listen. If you want to survive, if you want to honor your father’s wishes, you have to trust me—at least for now.”

She glared at him, her mind racing with confusion and grief, but she knew she had no choice. If what he said was even half true, her father’s death wasn’t just a tragic accident. It was part of something bigger, something dangerous.

Taking a deep breath, she whispered, “Fine. Tell me everything. Start with why I’m here.”

Zachary nodded, his gaze softening. “There are people out there, people your father had connections with, who believe you know something. Or… have something that they want. Something powerful.”

Camille’s mind reeled. Her father had never mentioned anything like this. “What…what is it they want?”

“Answers,” Zachary said simply. “And they think you have them. But as long as you’re here, they won’t be able to reach you.”

She folded her arms, eyeing him warily. “And what’s in it for you? Why do you care?”

For a moment, Zachary hesitated, his gaze dropping before he looked her in the eyes. “I owe your father a debt. A big one. And keeping you safe… well, it’s how I plan to repay it.”

Camille swallowed, the weight of the situation pressing down on her. “And what happens if I try to leave?”

He straightened, a hint of warning in his eyes. “Then, Camille, you’re on your own. And trust me—you don’t want to be alone with what’s coming.”
