Between Four of Us

Chapter 39

Ch. 39 / 250 Jun 22, 2025

As the warehouse doors burst open, the shadowy figures stepped into the dim light, casting an ominous presence over the scene. Camille’s heart raced as she glanced at Ava, who still had the gun aimed at them, her eyes darting between the boys and the newcomers.

“Who are you?” Ava demanded, her voice quivering with uncertainty.

The lead figure, a tall man in a dark coat, stepped forward, his face obscured by shadows. “We’re here for what’s ours,” he said, his voice low and menacing. “Victor’s business isn’t over yet.”

Ava’s grip on the gun faltered as she stared at the man in shock. “You’re not supposed to be here! I—I’m in charge now!”

The man chuckled, a cold sound that sent shivers down Camille’s spine. “You? In charge? Victor was weak, and you’re even weaker. Step aside, and let the adults handle this.”

“No!” Ava screamed, her voice filled with desperation. “I won’t let you take anything from me! You don’t understand what I’ve been through!”

Camille seized the moment, stepping closer to Ava, her heart pounding. “Ava, listen to me. This isn’t going to end well for you. Put the gun down. We can all walk away from this if we work together.”

Ava’s eyes flickered with doubt as she glanced at Camille, but the threat of the mysterious men loomed larger. “You think they’ll let us go?” she spat, her resolve wavering. “They’ll kill us all!”

“Not if you put the gun down,” Noah said, his voice steady and calm. “You don’t have to do this. You can choose a different path.”

But Ava shook her head, the anger boiling inside her. “You don’t get it! This is bigger than any of us! I won’t be a pawn in this game anymore!”

Before anyone could react, she swung the gun around, aiming it at the men who had entered. “Stay back! I’ll shoot!”

The man in the coat raised his hands in mock surrender, a smirk on his face. “You think that gun will save you? You’re all trapped here. Put it down before you get hurt.”

Ava’s eyes were wild as she glanced back at Camille and the boys, uncertainty flickering across her face. “I can’t trust any of you!” she yelled, her voice cracking with fear and rage.

“Then trust yourself,” Matthew urged, taking a step closer. “You don’t have to be like Victor or those men. You can break free from this cycle of violence!”

Ava hesitated, her grip on the gun shaking as the shadows of the men drew closer. “You don’t understand what he did to me… to my sister!”

“Then let us help you!” Camille pleaded, stepping forward, her heart aching for the girl who had caused her so much pain but was also a victim in this twisted game. “We can fight this together.”

For a moment, it seemed like Ava might relent. The tension in the air was palpable as she looked from the boys to Camille, torn between her anger and the desperation of her situation. But then, the man in the coat took a step forward, and her resolve hardened once more.

“Get away from me!” she shouted, and in that moment of panic, she pulled the trigger.

The deafening crack of the gunshot echoed through the warehouse, but instead of the expected chaos, a sharp cry filled the air. Ava had shot at the men, but in her panic, the bullet had missed its target, striking a metal beam instead.

The man cursed, ducking for cover as his companions moved quickly to return fire. In the chaos that ensued, Camille saw her chance.

“Now!” she shouted to the boys, and they rushed forward, tackling Ava to the ground before she could pull the trigger again. The gun skidded across the floor as the men shouted and exchanged fire.

“Get up, Ava! We have to go!” Leo yelled, pulling her to her feet as Camille and Noah led the way toward the exit.

They ran toward the door, adrenaline fueling their movements as they dodged bullets and chaos. Just as they reached the entrance, the sound of sirens filled the air, growing louder by the second.

“Police! Everyone down!” a voice shouted from outside, and Camille’s heart soared at the sound of help finally arriving.

Ava stood frozen for a moment, confusion etched on her face. “They’re coming for us,” she whispered, fear creeping into her voice.

“You have to choose!” Camille shouted, grabbing Ava’s arm. “Either stay here and face them or come with us and try to make this right!”

For a split second, Ava hesitated, glancing back at the men who were now scrambling to escape the approaching police. Then, with a defiant glare, she turned to Camille, her decision made.

“I’m not going to be a pawn anymore,” she said, determination rising in her eyes. “Let’s go.”

With that, they bolted out of the warehouse just as the police stormed in. The officers were quick to assess the scene, shouting orders as they took control.

The four of them sprinted down the street, hearts pounding, breathing heavily as they disappeared into the shadows of the alleyways, leaving the chaos of the warehouse behind.

In that moment, Camille realized that Ava might not be an ally yet, but they had a chance to understand each other and fight against the darkness that had ensnared them all.

As they ran, Leo and Matthew exchanged a fierce look, the earlier argument forgotten in the face of their survival. For now, they were united, their fates intertwined in a way they had never anticipated.
