Isla’s POV
I just watched as Miller ran off into the distance, everything had happened to quickly that there was barely any time to process it.
Max was trying to pull me away from the sight of the dead body that lay mauled just feet away from us.
I turned my attention to Mora and felt my anger sizzle up because this girl had caused so much unnecessary drama in my life, and this was behind a joke now.
“I can’t believe your stupid mate killed him.” She turned around and glared at me, pointing a finger.
How dare she accuse me of being the one in the wrong.
Also, was she stupid?
Miller was not my mate.
Not anymore.
I felt my body start to shift as my wolf pushed forward and forced me to the back. Not even
Max could prevent me from shifting.
Mora’s eyes widened in fear, and she turned to run away from me, but my wolf was far too quick. Grabbing her with one swipe, she tumbled backwards banging her head on the ground and becoming as still as a statue.
“Isla. Shift now.” Max ordered. He took off his jacket and held it out to me, waiting for me to obey his demands. I growled to show that I was not happy about that but did as he asked since Mora was now on the ground.
Cora gasped and rushed to check on her.
“I feel a pulse.” She said and I laughed.
Cora shot me a look and shook her head as if I were the one in the wrong.
“She needs medical help.” Cora called out and then Daniel appeared with the baby in his arms.
“She isn’t my problem. Miller was right to kill that bastard. This pup deserves better.”
I raised an eyebrow but did not utter a word as Max grabbed my arm and took me to the car.
He was angry.
I could tell he was unhappy with my reaction, but I refused to care what he thought. I was a strong she wolfs and did not want to back down.
I was not weak.
He may be my second chance mate but there was no way he was going to make me feel like I was in the wrong.
We stopped as a huge roar was heard from somehwere to left of us. It sounded like thunder but then it dawned on me that he was coming out of the long sleep.
I nervously glanced at my brother and sister. They shared the same dread as me.
He was waking up.
Max scooped me up into his arms and placed me on the backseat. Throwing a pair of leggings and a jumper at me, he told me to stay there, and he would be right back.
He was crazy if he thought that was going to happen.
“That isn’t supposed to happen just yet.” I heard Daniel say to Max as they made their way to where our stupid father was being held.
They both seemed worried but went on to check it out anyway.
Cora was scared, she came to me and handed the baby to me once I was dressed.
“Isla, I get that your angry and upset, but we can’t just leave this baby here. Mora needs medical help, and the baby needs us right now.” Cora sighed and gave me a small smile.
I knew that she was right.
“We need to get out of here.” Daniel came hurtling back towards us and picked Mora up. He gently placed her in the seat beside me, but I could not look at her. I held onto that baby so tightly and kept my eyes firmly straight ahead.
“What’s happened?” Cora whispered but Daniel shook his head and Max ran round to the driver’s seat. Giving a quicklook over his shoulder, his eyes met mine and I felt a small shiver run down my spine.
He looked at the baby then back at me again and the corner of his mouth turned upwards into a small smile.
He liked the sight of me holding a baby and the future that awaited us as a family.
“Let’s go.” I called out making him crash back to reality with a huge thud.
He turned back to the road ahead and off we went.
“Daniel, tell me what happened.” Cora was begging to know.
Daniel shook his head and would not look at me or Cora.
“It’s nothing to worry about. We just dosed him up a little more. By the time he comes back to it, we will be long gone.” Max finally explained and my mouth felt open.
They had dosed him up more.
He would be lucky to survive that sort of dosage.
Not that I should care.
He was a crazy physcho.
“Your mother needs to be kept safe.” Max said as if reading my mind.
I knew that he was right, but it really did not make me feel any better.
“The next pack is two miles away; we will make it soon. Mora will be fine.” Daniel assured me and Cora.
I looked down at the baby in my arms. Sleeping so peacefully, such an innocent little life that had no idea of the drama unfolding around us.
This baby needed to be kept safe, I was going to make sure of that.
I think I fell asleep at some point because we had stopped when I woke up. The baby was gone from my arms, and I rubbed my tired eyes then stretched my body out.
Looking around, I realised that I was on my own.
Where the heck was everyone?
Pushing the door open, I stepped out and frowned at my surroundings.
Why the hell did I recognise this hell hole.
Pembroke.
Why was I back here?
I heard voices across the grounds and slowly walked towards it.
It was Max and he was talking to someone that I did not recognise or know.
They looked deep in conversation, and I was curious as to what that was about.
It soon dawned on me that my second chance mate was talking to one of the elders. Someone must have called him.
“King Max, please be assured that everything will be fine. Your friends will be looked after and there is nothing to worry about. Miller is out the way, and this will soon be your pack, everyone will succumb to your orders and anyone who is seen to disobey will be dealt with accordingly. Miller has betrayed this pack far too many times now.”
I couldn’t help but gasp loudly which caused me to be busted.
“Oh, my goddess!”
“Isla, let me explain.” Max called out when he spotted me nearby.
“You bought me back here. To this hell hole and didn’t even warn me. Do you know how much I hate this place? It’s where all my bad memories lie” I yelled furiously.
I hated that he had bought me back here.
Even if it was for the sake of Mora getting the medical attention that she clearly needed.
“Oh, come on, don’t be like that.” He cocked his head to the side and sidled up to me.
I growled to show that I was not so easily won over like that.
I had heard enough.
“Isla, get back here right now. That is an order.”
No way was I going to listen to him.
Turning on my heel, I ran off down the pathway that I knew so well.
I had spent many days of my childhood running up and down this, so I knew it like the back of my hand.
Tears were running down my cheek and I felt sick, so sick.
“Isla. Please listen to me.” Max was hot on my heel and before I knew it, he had caught up with me. I was flung against the tree and then felt his arms snake around my chest working their way upwards over my breasts and then he was tracing a finger around my lips. I couldn’t help but moan slightly at his touch.
He started to brush his lips against my neck where my mark would be, and I felt my whole-body tingle with pleasure and my heart was hammering away in my chest while my tummy did some crazy somersault flips.
“Isla, believe me. I want you. I love you and I will never ever do anything to hurt you.” He whispered softly in my ear as I turned into a pathetic pile of mush.
“I love you too.” I whispered back as my lips fell onto his and we started to kiss passionately.
