Miller’s POV
I looked around, trying hard not to panic all the while dread filled me. My stomach was in knots and my heart pumping away like it was about to break through my chest.
Where could she be?
She had gone with Esmeralda to talk and now I could not find either of them.
I couldn’t see her and not could I pick up her scent.
Nothing.
It was as if she had never existed.
“Isla?” I yelled before jumping into the air as my body shifted into my wolf. She had to be out there somewhere.
I needed to find her and protect her.
After about an hour of running through the forest, I stopped to catch a breath and some water from a small stream. It was beautiful out here.
Suddenly out of nowhere, I felt a sharp pain ripple through my back leg causing me to whimper and slow down. I was shocked to see that two other wolves surrounded me, not as big as my own but baring their teeth and snarling like a pair of hungry hyenas. They must have hidden their scents as I should have been able to smell them.
Their eyes fixated on me and for a split second I felt fear take over, paralyzing me.
“Shift back.” one of them ordered and the other bit into my leg again when I hesitated.
“Miller? What the heck. Why are you here? Shouldn't you be at Pembroke?” one of them said as they shifted back to their human form and picked up a bag which contained spare clothes. Throwing a pair of shorts my way I squinted my eyes trying to work out who this was.
How did they know me and more to the point how did they know I was from Pembroke?
“Miller, you remember us. It's me.” he shook my shoulders and grinned happily in my face all the while anger was boiling up inside me.
“I have no idea who you are and what you want from me?” I growled warning them off me. They looked surprised.
“Don't be daft.” the smaller one chuckled as if it were a big joke. “You don't remember us, Dennis and Derek, so if you are here then who's in charge at Pembroke? That should be our next stop?”
I did not like the way that they were talking and wanted to rip the pair of them apart.
“Isla’s mate?” he said with his face suddenly all serious.
My ears pricked up and a lowly growl sounded from my chest.
What did they know about Isla?
“Miller, where is the girl? We have been instructed to find and collect her. That pack house is being ripped apart until she's found.” Dennis informed me with a smirk and a slight lick of his lips.
My wolf was growling in the back of my head, growing more frustrated by the passing minutes.
I was going to have to be these two.
There was no way that they would be getting to Isla.
“Max will be pleased when we return with Isla and your head.” Dennis gloated much to the disgust of Miller.
“Once we find Isla and explain all of this was just a misunderstanding and pin it all on you, she will be back with Max, and we will get the payment promised to us.” Derek began to laugh causing Dennis snapped his eyes at him and growl warningly.
“What are you talking about? Isla knows that Max is nothing but a liar and a fraud.” I started causing the pair of them to look surprised.
When they glared back at each other, I took that very second to jump forward, pushing their heads together so hard that they yelled out in agony. Then shifting back to my wolf form, I sunk my teeth into the back to Dennis legs and he let out an ear-piercing shriek which echoed so loudly throughout the woods causing a few birds to flap their wings and fly away. I watched with satisfaction as blood poured from their mouths, both lying lifeless on the muddy dirt track.
Now I needed to get back to finding Isla.
She was out there somewhere.
If only I could sense her or something.
Running back to the pack house I was shocked to find dead bodies everywhere; it looked like a blood bath.
A whole sea of distorted bodies, missing limbs were thrown all over the pack grounds.
As I was about to enter the pack house, I heard a familiar voice throwing orders about.
Max.
I quickly hid behind the back of a tree and hoped that he had not seen me.
This was not good.
“Miller should be dead by now, stupid fool. Isla will come running back to me.” I heard Max laugh. “This whole pack were stupid enough to go against me. Look what happened. Such a shame but now it will be mine. We are the only survivors.”
I could just imagine the stupid smirk on his face.
“It is only a matter of time.” he continued to say as a bunch of warriors chuckled along with him.
“All I need now is my powerful little Isla, then everything will be mine.” he bragged as they made their way towards the forest.
This was all him.
They had come and attacked the pack for Max.
He thought that I was dead, well he was so wrong.
I needed to find Isla before he or anyone else did.
I had to get in there and see if she was there because in my mind I was running out of places where she could have gone.
I almost threw up when I found even more dead bodies splattered all over the corridors. It was an eery silence. I could feel my heart thumping in my chest as I made my way to the first floor. I knew that I was taking a huge risk and could be caught at any time but there was no way I could not at least try.
I heard the faint cry of someone calling for help and when I looked across saw it was Cora.
She was alive.
“Oh, Miller. I'm so glad to see you.” she sobbed into me the second that I pulled her up. She was bleeding from her chest and looked extremely weak. Her eyes were full of sadness and begging me to save her.
“Eric is dead, the whole pack is gone.” she started to shriek, her body shaking uncontrollably. I needed to keep her calm. Max could not know that there were any survivors.
“Cora I am going to help you but please don't freak out. You must be silent. Max is behind all of this.” I whispered to her, and her eyes widened but she gave a slight nod to show that she understood.
“Someone is alive. I can smell it.” Max bellowed from the bottom of the stairs. I froze and Cora gripped my hand as I threw her over my shoulder.
He was not getting away with this.
