Her Rejection, His regret

Is this a set up?

Ch. 49 / 64 Feb 16, 2026

Miller’s POV

I woke up to find myself in the back of the truck and my arms tied together with a rag in my mouth to obviously prevent me talking or making any sound.

I felt sick and woozy, my mind was blank with whatever had happened to me.

I remembered Ed talking to me then nothing. I could hear voices outside and instantly I knew what who it was.

Max and Ed.

I listened carefully to their conversation, trying to work out whatever they were up to. It was like a riddle.

I had no clue.

“He needs to stay the hell out of it.” I heard Max say to Ed who sighed and then grunted in response.

“You owe me big time Ed and I want that girl for myself. If you want your dirty little secret to be kept and not exposed, then I suggest you convince your daughter to take it.” Max was starting to growl.

“Remember who you are talking to, she is already yours, it's down to you to mark and mate with her to finish that mate bond but I assure you that she will take Pembroke.” Ed said loudly as if putting Max in his place.

“That cretin, Miller will have no say over this.” Max growled.

“He’s likely to be out of it for a few hours yet. That stuff is strong. Even that foolish idiot that believes Isla was his real daughter for all those years, he’s still out cold. The filthy imbecile.” Ed roared with laughter at his own words.

“I can’t stand that Miller. He makes my skin crawl. Thank the goddess that Isla is not his. I suppose he did me a huge favour by rejecting her.” I heard Max boast.

He hated me and I did not particularly like him, there had always been something slightly off about him and now I had my suspicions confirmed.

They wanted to take Pembroke from me, but I was still breathing. Why had they not killed me yet to get me out of the way?

I wish that I could answer that but unfortunately, I had no idea.

Something inside me told me that Isla was outside there.

I needed to tell her everything that I had heard and suspected.

Max was a stupid idiot and he had Isla fooled for sure. I knew that she would never be mine, I had messed that one up myself and I would always have to live with that regret. But I could at least save her the further humiliation from another so-called mate.

I knew that he did not love Isla. He could not love her like I did, she was beautiful and amazing in every way. I would never forget the look on her face when j rejected her. That look has always haunted me.

I really did think that I was doing the right thing back then, Mora was more than happy to be my luna. Islas father had not wanted me to accept his daughter at that time. I wish I had not listened to anyone now. She would have been mine and we would have been so happy by now with a few pups and an heir for Pembroke.

All that was a dream that would never happen to me now.

Not that I could blame Isla. She saw me as a complete loser that ruined her life from the start. She saw Max as a hero, her second chance and most others would see him as that but now I knew that he had an anterior motive. He was worse than Mora. He and her would have been much more suited together.

The truck door suddenly was swung open causing me to quickly close my eyes and pretend to be out of it still.

I knew it was Max.

“Look at the pathetic sight of him. We should just bury the pair of them and be rid of them.” Max chuckled to Ed who laughed along with him.

“Isla had a lucky escape from this arsehole.” Max grabbed me by the scruff of the neck and then pushed me down again, laughing loudly as he did so. My head hit the window and I wanted so badly to rip him apart, but I knew it was not a good idea. I had to get away somehow, alert Isla that these two were up to something and she should be warned. I could not bare the thought of anything and happening to her.

“Just imagine if he knew the truth about Isla, how gutted he would be to know how powerful that girl is, he is such a loser.” Max carried on saying to Ed.

I ignored the pain in my head as I remained as still as possible. If they knew that I could hear their conversation, then they would kill me for sure.

“Let’s get going. I need to see her.” Max ordered and the truck was started up again.

A little while later we were parking up and Max jumped out of the truck followed by Ed. I stole a sneaky glance out of the window and gasped when I saw Isla. She was not alone either. Daniel pulled up behind and got him out.

I wondered if he were in on this too.

What was happening?

I recognised that we were at the Emerald City Pack. I think that Max seemed to know them.

I hated to see how Isla was all over him but the car that was smashed into the tree made me worry.

Was Mora and the baby, ok?

What about Cora?

This had to be some sort of set up.
