He was looking at me with a tilted head as I was the most anticipated puzzle of his life. "You're hungry." He murmured.
"I'm not. What's the name of your mate?" I asked, trying not to snort.
"You've recently met her." He whispered. He glared around. I didn't follow his eyes. All eyes must be on us.
"You wouldn't have hurt her if she were your soulmate." I told him.
His eyes jerked at me. "You're pushing me to the edge, near to losing my control." He drew a step closer. The heat seeping through his body alerted me. The fire was a centimetre away from coming out on the surface.
"Why? You can leave me here on my own." I shrugged my shoulders, not liking my own words.
"I can't do that." His lips barely moved as he murmured.
It took all my willpower to step back from him. He wasn't mocking me. Something was stopping him from abandoning me here. Perhaps, his wolf. But he couldn't recognize me, his mate. My eyes swiped over his shoulder. Was she really his mate?
Her eyes met mine. They flashed grey again. "You're not telling me everything?" I shook my head, bringing my eyes back to him.
His eyes narrowed on me. "You're not my date." He growled low.
Ouch! That hurts, like thousands of nails attacking my heart at the same time. I gulped, kept looking in his eyes. His gaze stayed on me, not wavering but his attention was somewhere else.
I needed to pull myself out of my reverie. How could she be his mate?
"Is he your brother?" I asked, gesturing at the troop where Darius was enjoying the company of Aragon, Caleb and some royal looking people I do not know. No one told me that they were twin.
"One minute younger." He grabbed the glass containing the same crimson amber liquor.
"And she?" I avoided looking at her as I gestured at her with my chin.
"His mate," His lips were barely moving. I was glad that at least I could hear him.
"And who's your mate?" I asked, plucking a step closer to him.
"She died." My heart broke at his words. His voice, face, his eyes weren't holding any feeling, expression. It felt like he wasn't bothered.
"And you look okay with it. " My heart was pounding in my ears, a strange kind of emotion was coiling inside me. It was pushing me to the edge, giving me a strange kind of feeling that wanted me to run away somewhere far.
"Aren't you hungry?" His brows shot up as he stared at me.
I looked that way. My head was still stuck there. I was seeing various kind of sweet dishes, I didn't even know their
names. "How could she be your mate if..." I trailed off. I'm alive, breathing right in front of him and he has just declared me dead. Awesome!
His expression closed off when his eyes met mine. "You're not hungry." He said.
A mate could understand you without exchanging words. "How could you be so sure?" I asked, hoping he would take the hint.
"I know what's running in everyone's head. Until he or she isn't powerful enough to protect them from my sight. Fire flashed in his eyes.
" Alright, how many in this hall want to kill me?" I asked, honestly. I couldn't hope for an answer to my queries. It would be a great help if he could alert me.
His eyes drifted around, swiping the hall. He stayed calm. His eyes rested on his brother, Darius. A secretive look that passed between them kept me wondering. They were twins, but friends? I have my doubts.
"Don't make new friends." He said, scowling.
"What kind of a advice this it?" Then I bit my lower lip. " I asked Esmeralda to be my friend. She refused. And I have two people who hate me and they wanna murder me. " Please, tell Aragon to take me to my mother, if somehow I die." I chuckled, but I couldn't suppress anxiety. My mother is pregnant. Perhaps, I would never know if it'd be a boy or girl. Ava and Luke will love him. My mother would shower her love over him. She was healthy now. She could take care of him.
"Your brother can take care of you. Eat something." With this, he spun showing his back to me and he strode toward the group..
I opened my mouth. "Do you have any questions?" James spoke cheerfully, stopping by me.
I looked at him in disbelief. "Why is she looking like me? Is she also wearing some kind of stuff, too. " I flattened my lips, glancing at the ring. That wasn't me, feeling angry all the time.
"She's part of you." He said.
"What a stupid answer this is? What do you mean by part."
"Believe me, Queen." He whispered, I felt the pressure of the air around me. "Everyone wants to know this." He said
I don't like his serious expression. Part! Not a twin? "She ain't my sister?" I asked.
"No," He shook his head.
My brows crushed together. The pressure in the air was gone. I inhaled deeply. I strained to remember something. But I did not know how to do this when I remember myself leading a human life. Suddenly, I was from a werewolf family, my father is an alpha, but brother is the future Alpha. My mate is from another universe.
"Why is she his mate?" It's eating me.
"Everyone says so." He shrugged his shoulders, looking over my shoulder.
I squeezed my eyes shut. I didn't want them near me.
"I can see you have a problem with this." Her voice seemed acid to my ears.
"Let's go, James." I told him not paying them any attention.
"You can lose your life for showing your back to the queen or the future queen." Esmeralda said, sharply.
"Oh, you can try." I winked at her and turned, not sparing another glance to my copycat. My eyes drifted around to find him. But I felt Aragon's eyes on me.
I smiled at him, hoping he would return it. He smiled and motioned at the food stall.
"Let's get you something to eat, dear sister." James threw his arm over my shoulder, recalling me of my brothers and Carlos. My eyes brimmed with tears. I refused to cry after recalling what I could have done with my tears.
I enjoyed my food with my fake brother. He's nice and makes me laugh a lot. He even told me the names of all the dishes. But I could hardly remember two or three.
"Hello," I recognized him immediately. The flash of his grey eyes confirmed it. Darius pulled the chair next to me and made himself settled. He smiled at me. "My brother rarely shows interest. Particularly to a vampire girl." He said, smirking.
I sat silent, unsure what to say. They would call me a freak if I asked the same question.
I ignored his question and shot him with one that was running in my head. "Your eyes flashed grey, not amber."
"She's from the earth." James added immediately before he could snarl at me.
"I see. Lack of culture and traditions. I'm a light." He said.
It was more confusing. I shrugged my shoulders, clearly telling him that I wasn't aware.
"My brother is the king of Darkness, everything that contains darkness, evil." He paused. My attention was on him. "I'm light."
"Alpha? Are you not a wolf! " I asked.
"We're." He tapped his finger over his chest where we felt our wolf. "Light and Dark. It divides us according to our powers. I can freeze to death with a swipe of my finger."
"Your mate can do this too." I asked, reminding her eyes flashing grey too.
He shook his head. "Only a prince or a king can do this. No one has powers like my brother." I could feel pride in his voice.
"And his mate?" I asked. Yes, I was asking the same questions in a different way. Silver and Betty were experts in this. I wasn't certain about getting anything out of his head. He wasn't going to spill his guts to me.
"What about our mate?" He said, smirking.
That didn't answer anything but his Our irked me. I don't believe in sharing mate, my mate Is only mine. If Dastien touched anyone I would burn him in his own magical fire.
I held myself from glaring at him. A shadow fell over me. I glanced up and sighed in relief.
"Time to go home, Serafina." He said
I got on my feet but my eyes kept looking around, finding him. I wanted to leave this weird place filled with weird people. But my eyes are looking for him.
"He left an hour ago." He said, answering my unspoken question.
Could my head and heart, for once, settle on one thing? Oh this stuff was when I was only a human. I shouldn't forget my wolf. She was not happy with me.
Nodding my head, I started toward the door with James. All eyes turned on us. If I hadn't come here with Dastien, no one would have recognized me.
"Don't make eye contact with anyone. Keep your eyes low and keep walking." James whispered
I lifted my chin, my eyes glued on him. "Why so?" I Asked
Before I got my answer, my wolf realized the danger as the air turned tense. My heart picked up a race.
His arm curled around my waist. Using his vampire speed he reached the car. My surroundings turned blurry for a second.
"What was that for?" I steadied myself.
"She'll be here." He was looking disturb, his eyebrows were crushed together in annoyance
"Who?" I asked, watching him unlock the car.
He opened the door. Grasping my arm, he shoved me in the passenger seat. "I'll explain later." He slammed it shut and rounded the car in a flash. I blinked my eyes and he was behind the wheel.
"How about now?" I asked, looking at him.
Twisting the keys, he accelerated the car. I grasped the seat like dear life. From whatever he was running, he would save me but I was certain to meet an accident. He was driving so fast.
"You need to slow the car down or I'll throw up." My back was pressed against the seat.
"Er, use this. I love my car." He shoved a small green paper bag in my hand. I stared at him.
"What's happening?" I panicked. He would give me a heart attack.
"She's here." He blurted, looking more tense.
I gaze straightened in front of me, snorting. "Who? His girlfriend was already there? Who could be more dangerous than her?"
"His mother. We don't know... I mean." He looked
My body trembled. A sudden wave of fear coursed through me. My head snapped at him. "I want to see her."
"That would be madness. You'll die. Forever." His words created an ominous air.
I gulped painfully. "How would I know the situation if I don't know anything?"
"Oh, I can scent your fear. You're aware of it. After ten minutes, you would have hauled your feet out of the ball room."
"Is she that scary?" I asked, The silence fell, tightening the air with tension and dread. I wouldn't deny that I wasn't scared. But it wasn't actually fear of some person but of happening something really unpleasant and dark.
"She's the reason for everything. I can understand. Don't just... don't ask anything, Queen. Let me take you to a safe place."
I stared down at my diamond ring. Was she so strong to break the Cold King's spell? I could feel the wrath of my wolf within me. Though the reasons are hidden from me. They won't be pleasant. My heart skidded every other beat when I recalled that she paralyzed me in the woods and blamed me for everything. I wasn't aware of it. She is so powerful. No doubt. She wants me to do something.
"Can she recognize me, still?" I ran my thumb ove it, feeling the power beneath my skin.
"I don't know. But King felt you. She could too."he exhaled out.
My eyes snapped at him. "Still, he hurt me."
He shook his head but kept his eyes out of the window. It looked like the car was moving itself. "He wouldn't have healed you but scorched you."
"Yes, I'm aware." The hair on my nape rose.
He drove in silence. I couldn't bring myself ask anything further.
