The hospital room was dimly lit, the soft hum of machines the only sound breaking the silence. Camille stepped inside, her heart pounding in her chest as she saw her mother lying in the hospital bed, pale but breathing. Tears streamed down her face, the relief of seeing her mother alive overwhelming her.
“Mom,” Camille whispered, her voice trembling as she approached the bed. She gently took her mother’s hand in hers, squeezing it tightly. “The surgery was a success. You’re going to be okay.”
Her mother’s eyes fluttered open, tired and weak, but there was a glimmer of strength in them. Camille could feel the weight of everything crashing down on her. All the chaos, the secrets, the danger—they had brought them to this moment.
Tears welled up in Camille’s eyes again. “Mom,” she started, her voice barely a whisper. “We should go back to Paris. We should have never come here.”
Her mother stayed silent for a long moment, staring at the ceiling as if she were lost in thought. Then, her voice came out, hoarse and broken. “Camille, you cannot trust your father.”
Camille’s heart sank as she gripped her mother’s hand tighter. “What do you mean?” she asked, her throat tightening with fear.
Her mother’s gaze shifted to her, eyes filled with pain. “He kidnapped me, Camille. He tortured me. Your father…he’s not the man we thought he was.”
Camille’s breath caught in her throat, her mind reeling from the revelation. “What? How—why would he do this?” she choked, tears falling freely down her cheeks. “I don’t understand.”
Her mother closed her eyes for a moment, her face etched with exhaustion. “He has something to do with Victor’s business. I don’t know the full extent of it, but that’s the reason we moved here. It’s why he brought us here. He needed to keep me quiet, to keep his secrets hidden.”
Camille felt like the ground was falling out from under her. Everything she thought she knew about her father shattered in an instant. “But why, Mom? What does Dad have to do with Victor? And why did he hurt you?”
Her mother sighed, her breath shaky. “I don’t know all the details, but I think your father was involved in something illegal with Victor. Something dangerous. He didn’t want me to find out. When I started asking questions, he…he did whatever he could to make sure I wouldn’t talk.”
Camille covered her mouth with her hand, stifling a sob as the full weight of her mother’s words sank in. Her father, the man she had trusted all her life, was hiding something dark, something that went far beyond her worst fears. And he had hurt her mother to keep those secrets buried.
“I…I can’t believe this,” Camille whispered, her voice trembling. “I trusted him.”
Her mother gave a weak nod, her hand trembling slightly in Camille’s grasp. “I’m sorry, Camille. I didn’t want you to be caught in this mess. But you have to be careful. I don’t know who else is involved, or what your father is truly capable of.”
Camille wiped her tears away, her mind racing. She had to figure out what was happening. She couldn’t trust her father anymore, and the mysterious messages she had been receiving suddenly felt more ominous. Her thoughts shifted to the boys—Noah, Leo, Matthew—and the mess they were all entangled in. The danger felt closer now, creeping into every corner of her life.
“I don’t know who to trust anymore,” Camille admitted, her voice breaking. “Everything is falling apart, and I’m scared.”
Her mother gave her hand a soft squeeze, her eyes filled with sympathy. “You don’t have to figure this out alone, Camille. But you have to stay strong, for yourself and for them. I don’t know how far your father’s reach goes, but he’s dangerous.”
Camille nodded, trying to muster some strength from her mother’s words. “I’ll be careful,” she said, her voice barely above a whisper. “But I don’t know how much more I can take.”
Before she could say anything else, her phone buzzed in her pocket, pulling her back to the unsettling reality outside the hospital room. Her heart skipped a beat as she glanced at the screen. Another message.
“You’re closer than you think, but you’re not safe yet. Time is running out.”
A shiver ran down Camille’s spine. She looked up at her mother, but her eyes had already drifted shut again, exhaustion pulling her back into sleep. Camille quietly stood, backing away from the bed. The cryptic messages were coming too often, and whoever was behind them knew everything. She had to stay one step ahead, but how?
As she walked out of the room, she found Leo waiting for her, pacing the hallway with a look of concern. The moment he saw her, he rushed over, pulling her into his arms.
“Is she okay?” he asked softly, his voice full of worry.
“She’s stable, but… she said things about my father. Things I never imagined,” Camille whispered, resting her head against his chest. “Leo, I don’t know what to do anymore.”
He held her tightly, brushing a kiss against her forehead. “We’ll figure this out. Whatever your father’s hiding, we’ll uncover it. You’re not alone in this, Camille.”
But deep down, she knew the weight of these secrets could destroy them all. There was something much darker at play, and with every message, the danger felt more real.
Leo’s phone buzzed too, breaking the moment. He pulled it out, glancing at the screen. “It’s from Matthew. They’re outside with Mom, waiting to take us home.”
Camille nodded, pulling herself together as they walked toward the exit. She needed a clear mind to face whatever came next. But as they approached the hospital doors, a sinking feeling tugged at her gut.
Later that night, after returning to the boys’ house, Camille received another message.
“Careful who you trust.”
