Between Four of Us

Chapter 31

Ch. 31 / 250 Jun 22, 2025

They arrived at the hospital in a flurry of chaos, the emergency room buzzing with activity. Camille barely registered the stark fluorescent lights and the antiseptic smell as she and the boys rushed her mother inside. Evelyn was whisked away on a stretcher, nurses calling out orders and doctors pushing through the throng.

Camille’s heart raced as she watched the paramedics work. Her mind was a whirlwind of emotions—fear for her mother, anger at her father, and a suffocating confusion about everything that had happened.

“Camille, breathe,” Leo said softly, his voice cutting through her frantic thoughts. He placed a comforting hand on her shoulder, his presence grounding her amidst the chaos. “She’s in good hands. They’ll take care of her.”

“I can’t lose her, Leo,” Camille admitted, her voice trembling as she pressed her hands to her face. “What if it’s too late? What if—”

“It’s not too late,” Leo assured her, pulling her into a gentle embrace. She leaned into him, resting her head against his chest, the steady rhythm of his heartbeat calming her racing thoughts. “You need to stay strong. She needs you to be strong.”

Matthew and Noah were a few paces away, standing near their mother, who had arrived looking pale and worried. They were discussing the details of Evelyn’s condition, their voices hushed but tense. Camille could see the worry etched on Matthew’s face, and her heart ached for them all.

“Everything will be alright,” Leo whispered, kissing her forehead tenderly. The gesture sent a flutter of warmth through her, yet a pang of guilt twisted in her gut. She knew that Noah and Matthew also cared deeply for her, and the dynamic between the three brothers was already complicated enough without adding to it.

Just then, Camille’s phone buzzed violently in her pocket, snapping her out of the moment. She pulled it out, her breath hitching as she read the new message:

“Careful who you trust.”

Her heart sank, and she felt Leo tense beside her. “What does it say?” he asked, looking at her with concern.

“It’s another message…someone knows what’s going on.” Camille’s voice was barely above a whisper, dread pooling in her stomach. “Who could it be? Is it my dad? Or someone else?”

“What does it mean?” Leo asked, his brow furrowed. “Do you think it’s about your mom?”

“I don’t know. But it feels like a warning.” Camille’s fingers trembled as she clutched her phone, anxiety creeping in. “What if my father’s still involved? What if he has someone watching us?”

Leo’s grip tightened around her shoulders, his warmth a stark contrast to the cold reality that surrounded them. “We need to stay together. We’ll figure this out,” he said, determination in his voice. “But we need to trust each other. No more secrets.”

Matthew and Noah approached, their mother’s worried eyes flickering between the three of them. “What’s wrong?” Matthew asked, concern lacing his tone as he sensed the tension in the air.

“Just another message,” Camille replied, showing them the screen. Matthew’s face darkened, and Noah’s jaw clenched.

“Someone is playing a dangerous game,” Noah said, anger simmering beneath the surface. “We can’t let them manipulate us. We have to be careful.”

“Let’s stay focused on getting your mom stabilized first,” Matthew suggested, his voice firm. “We can’t do anything until we know she’s okay.”

Camille nodded, feeling a mix of gratitude and fear. They were all in this together, but the stakes had never felt higher. She knew that no matter what, they would have to navigate the treacherous waters ahead carefully.

Just then, a doctor emerged from the emergency room, his expression serious. “Are you the family of the woman who just got admitted in?” he asked, his gaze sweeping over them.

“Yes! How is she?” Camille pressed, her heart racing.

“She’s stable but will need surgery to address her injuries. We’ll do everything we can,” the doctor assured them. “You can wait in the family room while we prepare.”
