I wanted to leave. I wanted to go back to the palace and leave that place, but I couldn't. For some damn reason, I felt like seeing Melody one last time.
I wanted to speak to her. I didn't know why or what I would talk to her about, but something in me kept pushing me to go talk to her.
'Damn you, Jay,'
I cursed my wolf. I know that I am feeling this way because of him. It's all him.
He is the one that is dying to speak to Melody and I am forced to do it too.
I searched everywhere for her, but she was nowhere to be found. Then, I met Malcolm who told me where to look, and behold, she was right there.
She seemed to be having some serious discussion with Sofia and they were happy as they spoke to each other.
I took my time assessing and checking her out from afar. Those beautiful sparkling eyes. Her long tresses. That lovely smile and her set of pearly white teeth. Everything about her was beautiful.
I wonder why I didn't notice all this before.
I didn't know how or when my feet started moving until I was standing right behind the ladies.
Sofia noticed my presence first and tried to tell Melody who was in the middle of saying something to Sofia. I could tell from how round her lips were as they parted.
"Excuse me, ladies, I didn't mean to interrupt your little reunion, but I have some urgent matters to discuss with Melody."
Sofia's eyes squinted and she stood up. "With Melody? Urgent matters?"
"Yes. Didn't you hear me?" Her look of suspicion had me unfazed. All I wanted was to speak with Melody.
"I did. I heard you. I was just wondering what those urgent matters could be."
I know she was surprised to hear me say that. Who wouldn't be?
I spent half of my life hating Melody and here I was, dying to speak to her, even though I was surprised.
"Do I have to explain myself to you, now?"
Sofia got the message in my voice and realized that I was getting irritated with her questions. She gave up.
"Alright, I'll leave." Then she came closer to me and pretended to hug me. "But, if you hurt Melody again, I swear I won't forgive you, ever."
"I'll wait for you in the east wing." She announced as she hugged Melody.
What did she mean by again? Does she know something? Did Melody rat me out to my sister? Who else has she told about the rejection?
"Alright," Melody nodded as she stood up and curtsied to me. "Your Majesty."
I dragged her out of that place to a place that would be safe for whatever I was about to say.
"You tattletale! What did you say to Sofia?"
She shrugged and raised her head. "We only had girl's talk and I don't think I should be telling you all about that, Your Majesty."
There was something about the way she said 'Your Majesty' that made it sound like she was taunting me.
"Did your girl's talk include me?" I blurted.
I didn't know how to ask. I was never one to dive into such meaningless conversation, but I'm having it right now, all thanks to Melody.
"You? Why should...."
She probably realized that she shouldn't reply to a question with another question, especially when you're speaking to the king. She bit her lips as she took a short pause.
"We didn't talk about you, your majesty. We had no reason to."
What did she mean by they had no reason to? Wasn't I supposed to be the topic of every lady's discussion? Why did she make it sound like it was a terrible thing to talk about me?
"Meaning?" I crossed my arms.
"Pardon me, Your Majesty," She bowed slightly. "I can't tell you what I talked about with the Princess, but you can rest assured that we didn't talk about you."
"Then why did she...."
Is it right to tell her what Sofia said to me? What if she asks Sofia about it and the cat jumps out of the bag?
"Remember, Melody, you are not allowed to tell anyone about what happened those years ago."
"Years ago?" She raised her head again and flung her hair backwards. "What happened years ago, your majesty?"
Seriously? Is she asking me what happened those years ago?
"You know what I'm talking about, Melody, do not pretend!" My voice became thick and harsh.
Is she playing with me? How can she ask me what happened those years ago?
"Honestly, Your Majesty, I don't know what you're talking about." I raised her chin and made her look me in the eye. I wanted to see if she could still lie while looking into my eyes.
"You don't know?"
"No, Your Majesty." She shook her head.
"I'm referring to our bond, the rejection and whatever happened then. Did you forget or are you pretending?"
I do not want to believe that she forgot. Really. How is that possible? She spent more than half of her life chasing after me and now she has forgotten?
"Oh, that...." She nodded. "I wasn't pretending, your majesty. I have forgotten." Then she raised her head to meet my gaze. "Wasn't that what you wanted?"
My blood boiled. I felt the need to howl.
She's forgotten about it. She's forgotten me.
My head felt hot and I was fighting the urge to throw a punch at something or someone. What did that stupid Alpha feed her, that has made her forget me in just five years?
"If that is all, Your Majesty, I beg to take my leave." She curtsied and sauntered off.
"Don't you dare!" I hissed and grabbed her arm. "I'm not done talking to you, how dare you leave?!"
She stared blankly at me before looking down at her feet.
I was enraged.
She doesn't seem to care at all. No matter how loud I yell or how tight I hold her, she doesn't care.
Is this really the Melody that I used to know? I mean, Is she the same girl who cares about everything that has to do with me? Why is she so different?
Everything about her is so different.
"Don't test me, Melody. Don't you dare say a word about...."
"I can't say anything to anyone if I don't remember, Your Majesty." She tucked her hair behind her ear, then her gaze went from my hand to her arm where I had her gripped. "Whatever happened back then was irrelevant and is gone, out of my thoughts and out of my mind, so please do not worry."
Out of her thoughts and her mind? Seriously? Is she out to spite me? Because she is doing a great job at that.
"Melody...."
"I assure you, Your Majesty, nothing happened nor will happen." She moved, leaving a huge space between us. If I wasn't holding her arm, then she'd probably be far away from me.
I should be happy that she didn't tell anyone and never will, but I wasn't. I was livid. I could feel it in my bones.
How could she dare to kick me out of her mind?!
"If you have really forgotten about it, then why haven't you accepted the rejection? Why do I still feel the bond?"
"About that, I didn't know how all of this mating bond worked back then and when I found out how it does, you were far away, so I couldn't." She smiled. "How about we do it now?"
Melody has forgotten about me. She has moved on and I have too...or haven't I? Of course, I have!
I was living my life perfectly until she returned and now, I do not even know what I want anymore.
As if she couldn't wait to be rid of me, I heard Melody speak, sending me out of my confused thoughts.
"I, Melody Wayne....."
No! I can't let that happen! She can't sever the bond. Not until I figure out what is going on with me. I didn't know how to stop her from saying those words, so I pulled her close and kissed her.
