Freya's POV
"Freya, this is Dr. Chris Webber, the physician who attended to you when you fainted."
"Hello, Ms. Freya." Chris greeted me with a slight nod of his head.
I returned his smile politely.
"It happened suddenly, so I took the liberty of drawing a sample of your blood for testing while you were unconscious. I apologize for that."
Chris spoke courteously and gently, and I accepted his apology with gratitude.
"That's okay; instead, I should be thanking you for saving me in time."
Kingsley gave my hand a gentle squeeze before silently positioning himself in front of me, interrupting my conversation with Chris. I knew it was his possessiveness talking.
"Well, did you receive the results of the blood test, and why did Freya suddenly pass out?" Kingsley asked coldly.
"Here's the thing: the results indicate that we detected wolfsbane in Ms. Freya's blood."
Wolfsbane?
The recurrence of that word made my heart clench violently.
Although I had taken the medicine which Grace had put wolfsbane into before, it shouldn't still be present in my body after such a long time.
The detection of wolfsbane in the recent blood test implied that I had been unknowingly poisoned again.
However...
"But wolfsbane doesn't make people faint!" Kingsley interjected abruptly, expressing the same doubt as me.
Yes, wolfsbane might weaken or drain the energy of a werewolf, but it doesn't induce fainting.
"Yes, Alpha Kingsley, wolfsbane alone doesn't cause fainting. However, when combined with Wolf-flower, it produces that effect," Chris explained patiently.
Wolf-flower? Hearing that, I snapped back to attention and thought of that waiter.
No wonder I had detected a familiar scent on him earlier, along with the strong aroma of his perfume.
As a perfumer, I had naturally encountered Wolf-flower, but something as harmful as this wouldn't be a frequent choice for my perfume-making, so I didn't give it much thought at the time.
But it was still perplexing; if that person intended to harm me, why didn't he just take my life when he had the chance, but instead chose to faint me?
What was his exact purpose? I frowned and sank into deep thought.
"Besides, there's one more thing," Chris interjected suddenly.
I looked up at him, a trace of uneasiness inexplicably welling up in my heart.
Perhaps sensing my unease, Kingsley's hand gently rubbed the back of mine.
"Ms. Freya, I would like to take the liberty of asking if you have ever experienced a miscarriage?"
At that moment, both Kingsley and I flinched.
It was clear that Kingsley, like me, hadn't expected Chris to suddenly broach the topic.
For a moment, the atmosphere in the room became somewhat somber.
That incident had always been a painful memory between Kingsley and me. After we reconciled, we tacitly agreed not to bring it up again.
However, I had noticed glimpses of envy and nostalgia on Kingsley's face when he saw small children.
"Chris, you've crossed the line," Kingsley uttered coldly.
Beside him, I could clearly feel the anger of the wolf within him as Chris offended his mate.
"I'm sorry; it's just that as a doctor, it's my duty to be aware of my patient's condition for subsequent treatment..."
"Shut up! I appreciate your prompt treatment of my mate, but..." Kingsley shouted sternly.
"Kingsley," I interjected to stop him, gently holding his hand and signaling with my eyes that it was okay.
I then looked over at Chris, who still maintained a calm expression and didn't seem affected by Kingsley's anger.
"Yes, I lost a child once," I said casually. "I heard you mention follow-up treatments; does that imply there's still something wrong with my body?"
I maintained eye contact with Chris throughout the conversation.
"Yes, Ms. Freya, during my examination, I discovered that due to the damage to your uterus from your previous miscarriage, the chances of successfully conceiving in the future are slim to none."
Chris's words were barely out when I saw a figure flash by, followed by a thud. Kingsley had forcefully pressed Chris against the wall.
"What did you say? Who gave you the right to talk nonsense here?"
Kingsley's eyes turned blood-red as he seized Chris by the collar, his face filled with bloodlust.
It seemed that if Chris dared to utter another word, Kingsley would tear his throat without hesitation.
"Kingsley, let him go!" I shouted to Kingsley, concealing the pain I felt inside.
Kingsley reluctantly released Chris, but immediately turned towards me.
"Freya, this guy said that you..." Kingsley's voice was filled with anguish.
"I heard him. Let go of him first. Chris is innocent," I pleaded with Kingsley, trying to hold back tears.
Kingsley released Chris, but then rushed to me. He crouched down next to the bed, holding my hand tightly.
"Freya, he's talking nonsense. The chances might be smaller, but they're not nonexistent. Trust me; we'll have children again in the future. Our child will come back to us."
My mind was in a whirl at this point. Listening to Kingsley's words, I subconsciously nodded.
"Alpha Kingsley!" Jeremy abruptly entered the room with an anxious look.
"What is it?" Kingsley asked, not bothering to look back at him.
"Alpha Kingsley, everyone downstairs is saying..." Jeremy stammered, cautiously observing Kingsley's mood.
"Saying what?" Kingsley growled in annoyance.
"They're all saying that Ms. Freya lacks the qualifications to conceive an Alpha heir and isn't fit to be the Luna of the pack."
"What?" Kingsley and I visibly froze.
Why was the news circulating so quickly when we had just learned about it?
Kingsley then looked skeptically at Chris, but Chris met Kingsley's gaze openly.
After the two of them stared at each other for a few seconds, Kingsley turned his head to me and reassured, "Don't worry, I'm going to take care of this now. You don't have to worry about anything. Get some rest, and I'll silence whoever needs silencing!"
At this point, I had already been caught off guard by the succession of changes and could only nod my head woodenly. It was only after Kingsley had left that I was able to take a moment to sort through everything that had happened.
Everything at the banquet tonight was clearly aimed at me.
Who was that waiter? And who had spread the news of my infertility in the first place? Could it be Chris?
My heart sank at the thought of my infertility.
A profound sadness and pain filled the air.
Was it because I had once failed to protect my child that the Moon God had taken away the right to make me a mother?
For a moment, I couldn't accept this harsh reality. I had always believed I had a complete body and dreamed of a future family, only to have my illusions shattered at this moment.
