Freya's POV
I woke up the next day, and there was no sign of Kingsley.
"Alpha got a call from the company early in the morning to attend a meeting," the maid explained as she set up breakfast and then left.
Suddenly, I heard the door to my second-floor room open, and I looked up just in time to see Mavis coming down the stairs.
The moment she met my eyes, Mavis awkwardly touched her nose.
I warmly greeted her, "Good morning. How did you sleep last night? Come, have some breakfast."
Mavis hesitated for a moment, then walked over and sat down across from me. "Good morning," she said.
The two of us then enjoyed our respective breakfasts in silence.
Halfway through the meal, Mavis finally spoke up, "Luna Freya, I don't understand. I thought we had an understanding between us, and I clearly communicated to you that I didn't want to be a breeder for Kingsley. Why did you change your mind?"
In an instant, I realized that she had overheard my conversation with Kingsley the night before. I grabbed a tissue, wiped my mouth slowly and methodically, then looked up into her eyes and said calmly, "As you know, for my pack."
When Mavis heard what I said, her grip on her knife and fork tightened suddenly, and anger welled up in her eyes. "For the sake of your pack, you can sacrifice my happiness and life?"
Hearing her question, I couldn't help but let out a cold laugh, "I think you're mistaken, Ms. Mavis. The one who sacrificed your happiness and life wasn't me; it was none other than your beloved father. In fact, we are all the same, aren't we, Ms. Mavis? It is for your pack that you are here today, and it is for my pack that I can accept another woman as a breeder for my Alpha. This may be our destiny, and when powerless to fight it, all we can do is accept it."
With that, I stopped paying attention to Mavis, who was frozen in place, and turned to leave.
I drove to Kingsley's office; the car had a smooth ride and soon stopped in front of the Wright Group.
I had just stepped one foot into the lobby when I was respectfully led to the elevator by the receptionist. "This elevator goes straight to Alpha's office, Luna Freya, please."
I thanked her and stepped into the elevator. This wasn't my first time in Kingsley's office.
I stepped out of the elevator and stood in the hallway, moving towards Kingsley's office. The door was ajar, offering a clear view inside. Several senior administrators were reporting their work, and Kingsley wore a serious expression as he listened, his brow furrowed.
I lingered in the doorway, silently taking a few steps back before settling into a chair in the parlor. Lowering my head, I took a quiet sip of my coffee, a myriad of complex thoughts racing through my mind.
In my perception, Kingsley had always exuded elegance and confidence, possessing an aristocratic grace and winning confidence in everything he did. However, now he appeared with a furrowed, gloomy countenance, suggesting he had encountered some challenging situations.
I waited for almost half an hour before Kingsley pushed open the parlor door and entered. Weary, he adjusted his tie before walking towards me and embracing me, taking a deep breath.
As I tried to pull away, he huskily insisted, "just a moment, please."
I acquiesced, remaining still in his arms. This once noble and elegant man seemed like a large dog seeking comfort in that moment.
After a prolonged embrace, Kingsley released me.
"It seems that you've been quite busy recently?" I inquired slowly.
"Indeed, busy," Kingsley replied, tugging at the corner of his lips. "I have to catch a plane to Snowland this afternoon for a business trip. I won't be back for at least half a month."
I froze. Snowland was the territory of the Snowwolf Pack.
Had Kingsley's sudden business trip been part of the agreement between the King and Alpha Craig?
Sensing my thoughts, Kingsley explained, "You guessed it right. Snowland is resource-poor due to extreme weather, and the Snowwolf Pack has been struggling. The king wants Wright Group to establish a branch there, providing resource support to the Snowwolf Pack. Consequently..."
Kingsley gave me a scrutinizing look as he spoke before continuing, "It took Alpha Craig's willingness to allow his daughter to become my breeder."
But I just couldn't comprehend why the King would go to such lengths to assist such a small pack. Was it solely to secure a breeder for Kingsley?
"What gift do you desire from Snowland's side? I'll bring it back to you," Kingsley asked, changing the subject when he noticed my prolonged silence.
I pursed my lips and inquired, "So, how long will you be traveling?"
"About half a month," Kingsley replied, chagrined.
Sensing his annoyance, I reached out to give him a hug. Unexpectedly, Kingsley swept me into his arms, buried his head in the crook of my neck, and said sullenly, "But I don't want to be separated from you for that long."
Observing Kingsley's childish behavior, I couldn't help but burst into laughter.
After dropping Kingsley off at the airport, I drove back home. Upon arriving, I settled on the couch and sent Kingsley a message, asking him to give me a call upon reaching his destination. However, I didn't receive a call back from Kingsley even after the next morning.
I couldn't shake off a lingering unease in my mind. I gathered my emotions, shook my head, and thought that I might be overthinking things.
However, by the third day, I still hadn't received any messages from Kingsley.
