A sudden voice cut through the tense silence like a knife. “Drop the weapon.”
Everyone froze. Ava’s hand, once steady on the gun, faltered as she hesitated, her eyes darting toward the source of the voice. From the shadows emerged a figure none of them had expected to see.
Evelyn. The boys’ mother.
She was holding a gun, her eyes cold and unwavering as she stepped closer. The moonlight illuminated her face, her expression one of fierce determination. “Let go of Camille and my sons,” Evelyn commanded, her voice steady and controlled.
Ava’s smirk faltered as her grip on the gun loosened. For a brief moment, she seemed unsure, but the arrogant gleam in her eyes quickly returned. She dropped the gun to the ground with a metallic clatter, raising her hands in mock surrender.
“Well, well, well,” Ava sneered, her gaze shifting to Evelyn. “I should have known you’d show up eventually. Always pretending to be the perfect mother. But we both know how this really ends.”
Evelyn stepped forward, her eyes locked on Ava. “This ends when you let them go and stop this madness.”
Ava laughed bitterly. “Oh, please. You think you can just walk in here and take control of everything? This is why Victor cheated on you with my sister, Evelyn. You were never good enough for him. You couldn’t give him what he wanted, and now look where we are.”
The words stung like a slap across the face, and for a moment, the air was thick with tension. The boys stood frozen in shock, trying to process what Ava had just revealed. Camille could feel their confusion and hurt radiating off them, but all eyes were on Evelyn now.
Evelyn’s expression darkened, her fingers tightening around the gun. Her voice was dangerously low as she spoke, “Victor destroyed everything he touched, including himself. But you and your sister? You’ve done nothing but fuel that destruction. And now, you’re going to pay for it.”
Before anyone could react, Evelyn’s gun fired with a sharp crack, and the bullet struck Ava in the leg. Ava screamed in pain as she crumpled to the ground, clutching her wounded thigh.
The sound echoed beneath the bridge, leaving everyone stunned.
Ava’s bodyguard, who had been standing silently nearby, started to move, reaching for his own weapon. But Evelyn was faster. Another shot rang out, and this time, the bodyguard collapsed to the ground, a bullet clean through his head.
Camille gasped, her hand flying to her mouth in shock. The boys stood still, their faces pale and eyes wide as they watched the scene unfold.
Evelyn holstered her gun with an eerie calm and walked over to Ava, kneeling beside her. “You’ll live,” she said coldly, her gaze unwavering. “But you won’t walk away from this.”
Ava whimpered in pain, blood pooling beneath her leg as she glared up at Evelyn. “You… bitch,” she spat through gritted teeth.
Evelyn ignored her and pulled out her phone, dialing emergency services. “We need an ambulance under the old bridge,” she said coolly, giving them the location before hanging up.
As soon as she was done, Evelyn turned to Camille and the boys, her expression softening slightly. “Let’s find your parents,” she said, motioning for them to follow her.
Camille, still reeling from what had just happened, could only nod. Her heart raced as she exchanged glances with the boys, all of them clearly shaken by their mother’s actions. Noah reached for her hand, squeezing it lightly as they followed Evelyn toward their car.
The air felt heavy with unresolved tension, the weight of what had just occurred still settling in. Camille’s mind raced, torn between the relief of being rescued and the horror of witnessing such violence. And then, there was the new revelation about Victor and his affair with Ava’s sister. It felt like the ground was constantly shifting beneath her feet, one terrible secret after another being revealed.
As they climbed into the car, Camille’s phone buzzed once again, another cryptic message lighting up the screen.
It’s not over yet.
