Derek's POV
She even tried moonlight therapy once!
I had no idea. I felt a lump in my throat, and with difficulty, I said slowly, "Was it those days you took care of her?"
"Yes. She was wasting away as she spent her days in and out of the hospital, working several jobs to support John. Later, because her wound still wouldn't heal after a long time, she came to the hospital for examination. She conducted moonlight therapy by herself deep in the forest. I simply brought her food and water.
"She was weakest after the treatment. She felt dizzy, couldn't stand up, had no appetite, and couldn't eat at all. And she even lied to me, saying that she had friends taking care of her. When I found out, she was alone in bed, unable to get up. After she finally managed to go through the recovery period of the first few days after the therapy, the first thing she did was to complete the rejection ceremony with you."
Orson, a grown man, could hardly control his emotions and felt sorry for Tabitha, and even his voice trembled a bit. "Tabitha is immune to anesthesia. At that time, the doctor suggested installing an implantable venous access port for her. It meant cutting open her arm with a knife and embedding the device inside. I saw her one night, and her hand was injured. If the port were to come off, do you know what kind of danger it would cause?"
As Orson spoke, some memories came back to me.
I finally understood why Tabitha always looked pale and weak every time I saw her during that period. Ironically, I even thought she was pretending so as to avoid the rejection ceremony.
When Kyrian fell, she threw caution to the wind and saved him despite her sickly body.
How long did she stay in that snowy field?
Orson continued, "She was just a fragile young woman. Her wound had just healed, and they had to cut it open again to remove the device. Do you know how much pain she was in?"
I didn't know, because no matter how hurtful it was, it was nothing compared to the damage I caused to her afterward.
I ruined her life. I even pushed her hard when she was on the edge of the cliff.
She exhausted all her strength and finally fell to pieces all because of me.
No wonder everyone told me to be nicer to her. Yet I didn't listen! How could I be so stupid?
The door of the emergency room finally opened, and Tabitha was still in a deep sleep.
I hurriedly went up and said, "Doctor, how is my wife?"
The doctor took off his mask with a serious expression on his face and said, "What is wrong with you? The patient has lost so much blood, which indicates that there were symptoms early on. Why was she brought in so late? We have already taken samples. We won't know further until we see the test results."
Seeing my sorrowful expression, the doctor added, "Based on my many years of experience, the patient should have experienced physical failure. I suggest you be prepared."
I stumbled a few steps back, and Alvin quickly came forward to help me up as I was about to fall.
"Alpha Derek, be careful."
The doctor hurriedly left to examine and treat Tabitha further.
The cold wind blew in, and I felt a chill run through my whole body. I stood there, staring blankly as the nurse wheeled Tabitha into the next examination room. Somehow, I couldn't move at all.
After quite a while, I slowly lifted my head and looked at Orson.
"Even though the wolfsbane has already entered her bloodstream, she can still be saved, right?" I grabbed his arm with both hands as if he were my life-saving straw.
He looked at me with no trace of pity, only indifference.
Then he said word by word, "If she had cooperated with the treatment two years ago and spent the later five years without any stimulation, she would have been highly likely to recover. But now, her condition is extremely severe. I don't know how much time she has left. It might be just two or three days."
I mumbled, my lips trembling, "What did you say? Two or three days?"
He pulled my hand away and said, "If the wolfsbane spreads throughout her body, it'll likely lead to cancer. Any treatment will be meaningless, and we can only leave it to fate. No one can save her."
