Freya
I held my head going downstair. I was having a horrible headache. I think I overdid crying myself to sleep last night.
“Grandma,” I called.
I needed an Advil or any pill for a headache. The pain was too much to bear. My head felt like someone hit me in the head with a baseball bat, hard.
I didn’t hear her answer.
“Grandma,” I again called.
Still, no answer.
I started calling for Zira. I too didn’t hear her as well.
I went into the kitchen expecting to see them both, preparing breakfast, the kitchen was empty. And there wasn't any breakfast prepared the stove felt cold.
“Grandma, Zira,” I searched everywhere in the 2 story house. They were both nowhere to be found.
I ran outside to check to see if the car was in the garage, it was gone. They had gone out.
As I was about to return inside. I heard a car. I spun around. My puffy eyes squinched blocking out the morning sunlight. Two cars were coming towards me. I knew the first car. It was Grandma’s but the second car, I didn’t.
I went back to the step that lead to the porch as the car came closer and I saw that Zira was driving the strange blue car.
Both cars parked before me. Grandma and Zira came from the cars simultaneously towards me with a happy look on their face.
“Surprise, Freya, we bought you a MG 3,” they both said excitedly.
I was shocked they bought me a car.
“You can drive yourself to school like the other student,” said Grandma.
I walked over to the shiny car examining it. It was beautiful.
“I don’t know what to say,” I said.
Grandma and Zira hugged me.
“Just know that we are here for you and to make you happy,” said Grandma.
I hugged them tightly.
“Go and take your first drive,” Zira gave me the key.
I went into the car and started it. I drove in a circle in front of the home three times.
I was thankful they gave me a car.
The last gift my mom gave me, I was only eight. It was a Barbie doll and after that nothing. On my birthday she just gave me cash, I was thankful for it but I wish sometimes she could care enough to shop for my birthday or holiday gift like the other parents did.
I parked the car next to my grandma’s car and returned inside.
My headache had seemed to go away on its own. I didn’t need the pill for it anymore.
At breakfast Zira suggested I take a ride into the town just to get used to it, she even suggested coming as well. I wasn’t in for it. I just wanted to stay in my room and read.
The home phone rang and I looked at it, hoping it is my mom. Zira went to answer it. My head lowered to the mild fry egg and bacon on my plate.
“Freya, it’s for you,” I heard Zira.
I looked at her.
“It’s your mom,” her mouth moves without any sound.
I got up from my chair and took my time to her. She gave me the phone.
“Hello,” I answered as I turned my back.
I felt my hands holding the phone begin to shake.
“Hi honey,” I heard my mom’s voice for the first since she had abandoned me.
Tears instantly came running down my eyes.
“I’m sorry, I haven’t call you, I’ve been so busy with Jack. I hope all is well.”
I tried to speak to her, but my throat felt dry and words couldn’t seem to elude from my lips. My lips shiver, now wetted by my salty tears.
“Honey, I just call to wish you good luck on your first day at your new school. I’m a bit early to say it though,” she laughs.
After knowing she blames me for Dad leaving her, I couldn’t believe she was acting like nothing happened.
I let go of the phone and ran upstairs.
“Freya,” Grandma and Zira called.
I locked myself in the room and went for the red lighter again.
I pulled up my sleeve ready to burn myself.
I thought I had locked the door. The door opened and I quickly place the lighter in my back pocket and pulled down the sleeve, hiding the first burnt scar.
“Freya are you okay,” Grandma and Zira were in my room.
“I’m fine, now that you’re both here,” I lied running to hug them both.
They hugged me. As I remained to hug them all I could think about was harming myself. I was eager for them to leave the room, so I could.
