Witnessing what I could do and that my strength was inhuman. I was ready for a kill—to put an end to her. To stop the misery, she had caused me and the effect it now had on my father.
I was prepared to slash her throat open and bury her where no one would find her. But instead, my claws froze beneath my skin.
I thought she would be terrified of me, seeing what I was. She wasn't. I smelled no scent of fear emanating from her body. She was calm, taking it as if it were something she saw often.
She got up from the ground. My eyes kept changing uncontrollably back and forth into my wolf as she did.
"You're the wolf," she said as she stood. A single footstep away from me.
She recognized that I was the wolf who attacked her.
Her head is now lowered.
One of my hands was raised for a strike, but like always, she made it difficult to kill her.
She wept.
A pain struck me in the heart—loathing she was. It is difficult to see my other half cry. Her tears made me miserable.
"You're a wolf shifter, aren't you?" she asked, raising her head to mine.
I watched as a single tear slowly ran from her eyes, wanting to catch it. Wiping it away with just the tip of a finger
"You should fear me," I said, rather than answering her question.
I was in shock when she ran to me and her arms went around my torso. As she did, my hands were held away from her body, ignoring my desire to touch her.
Why was she hugging me when she knew I tried to kill her? I was baffled.
Still hugging me, her head was raised, and her eyes peered into mine.
"Thank you." Her lips slowly parted with each word.
I observed her lips. They were soft and moist, tempting to be caressed.
"Why are you thanking me? I tried to kill you," I reminded her.
"But you didn't," she said, and her head relaxed into my chest.
Stunned by her action, I kept leering at her as she remained to hold me.
A sudden rage struck me, and I shoved her away. I cannot afford to disappoint my father anymore.
My claws finally emerged from beneath the skin of my fingers.
"You should be terrified of me," I growled, wanting her to be.
"Then why don't I?" she asked.
Likewise, I was relaxed by her words. I shook my head, fighting every ounce of that feeling and refusing to.
I was so desperate for her to fear me, so I shifted into my wolf. She backed away as I did. A step closer to the hill.
That was good.
As I slowly crept upon her in my wolf form, her body shivered in fear.
"Please don't," she begged with shaking hands.
It was so hard to kill her. I was so frustrated and weary of fighting the bond we already shared.
"You must die!" I growled.
Her body became still after my comment, and soon she dropped to her knees.
"What have I ever done to you?" she asked.
Her aching words hit my wolf like an arrow, sensing how hurt she was emotionally.
"Being my soulmate," I retorted in a low, disgruntled voice.
She was shocked by my comment.
"What!" she said in disbelief.
"A wolf shifter and a human can never be soulmates," I went on to tell her.
It was fine doing so now, for she will never leave this forest alive.
"You're my cursed soulmate, and you must die."
She cried.
My wolf wanted to run to her and rub his face against hers, comforting her. But I managed to stop myself from doing so, thinking about the effect she would have on the pack. Dad would be crushed to see the good reputation he had maintained for the pack fall apart.
"Go ahead, do what you're here for," she said.
I was yet again surprised by her.
"I'm truly a curse," she sadly agreed. "My birth had made my dad leave my mom, and now it's affecting yours. Please get rid of me before I ruin someone else's life," she said as she pleaded.
What she had said brought me back to the day she begged me to first kill her. Still, I could not. I ran to her and shifted into my human form, holding her tightly in my arms.
"You're not a curse," I told her, lifting her from the ground.
Her beautiful, dark eyes peered into mine.
"I don't want to ruin your life," she said, concerned.
"My life will be fine as long as you're with me," I reassured her.
I then kissed her on her forehead; her eyes closed at the touch of my lips, and her head went to my chest.
Rejecting to kill your human soulmate was wrong for my kind, but it felt right that I didn't.
I studied her beautiful face in my arms, watching her as she smiled, already knowing what the future held for us: Nothing good, for we were two different kinds.
