A big, dark gray wolf had jumped into the vehicle, smashing the front mirror. I shouted and shielded my face with both hands as sharp shards of glass shot into the van.
The car went out of control and collided with a tree. Soon, the horn of the vehicle went off.
My face twisted in pain as I uncovered it with my hands.
"Are you okay?" Jurius said next to me
My attention steadily went to him, and I saw he was injured.
"Jurius, you're bleeding," I told him fearfully.
He inspected his wound by touching it.
"I'll be fine," he assured me, his face contorted in misery.
I then noticed that his injury was gradually fading as he healed.
"I need to get you to safety now," Jurius said as he exited and opened the door of his car. I unbuckled my seat belt as he did.
Jurius opened my door and assisted me in getting out of the car. I was gripped by panic as we stood in the dark. Jurius sensed I was, and he grasped one of my hands into his, holding it.
"Is your father close to us?" I asked him fidgety.
Jurius gave me no response, but I knew his answer as I observed his beastly eyes, a dark golden yellow and black, suspecting something in the dark before us.
His hand, still gripping mine, went around him as I hid behind him. As I did, I burrowed my face into the center of his athletic back.
I felt his head move toward me, and my attention went to him.
"I will never let anyone hurt you," he swore to me.
My head nods, trusting him.
A deadly growl emerges from the darkness, and the rustling of leaves indicates the dark gray wolf is making its way towards us.
I gripped Jurius's arms tighter.
The violent beast came from the darkness into the very dim full moon above us, first revealing its head, then its two front feet. Soon his full body was from the darkness. He stood, and he glared with a snarl.
"I won't let you kill her dad," Jurius protested.
The beast snarled, and I let go of Jurius' arm, tightening my arms around his waist and plunging my face into his back for comfort and safety.
"Get out of my way, son," he commanded.
My face was twisted in agony, and I sobbed, my tears dampening the back of his blouse.
As much as I love you, Dad, I won't let you hurt her."
Jurius stood his ground.
"I'll have to tear you apart then," his father said determiningly.
Jurius yanked my arms away, and I kept my distance from him as he transformed into his beast, which was nowhere like the colossal size of his father.
"You dare challenge me, son, your alpha!" his father yelled angrily.
I observed the two wolves circle each other with hostility from the back of a bark tree with increasing concern.
"Make it easier for yourself, son, and get out of the way," warned the alpha.
"I can't, Dad, for I love her."
The alpha rushed into Jurius' throat in rage at his remark. Dust rose around them as Jurius collapsed to the ground on his back.
My pupils dilated with fear as his father pressed him to the ground and struck his head with his paws.
"Jurius!" I cried out.
Like gasoline to a fire, my scream fueled him to shove his father into a tree.
His father raised and shook his head in pain.
"I will no longer be gentle with you because you are willing to bring shame to the pack," his father cursed.
He dashed to Jurius, and before Jurius could dodge him, I screamed as his jaws grasped Jurius's neck and tossed him into the bushes.
"Jurius!" I shrieked.
Every hair stood up on my skin as fear took over when Jurius's father's attention went to me.
His sharp teeth showed as he growled at me, and he took his time approaching me.
To avoid him, I spun around and dashed into the darkness.
My pulse beat against my rib cage as I heard the tramping sound of his footsteps closing in on me.
As the beast leaped before me, I came to a halt and nearly stumbled on a branch lying on the ground. I took steps back, terrified.
Human, why won't you make it easier on yourself and let me kill you? I promise I'll give you a quick and painless death," said the alpha as he slowly crept upon me.
I shudder in fear, and I look around, searching for Jurius to rescue me.
I lost my footing and slammed against the ground from behind. As the alpha moved his mouth to my throat, I froze and closed my eyes.
"Dad stop!" Jurius yelled.
The alpha lifted his head, and his front feet pinned me down into the earth.
"If you kill her, you will lose me as well," Jurius remarked.
"Stop this foolishness and put down the steel," the alpha responded.
I heard Jurius cry out in anguish, and the alpha took a step back.
I sat up, and I witnessed Jurius holding the steel in his right hand; it was dripping with his blood.
"Jurius!" I cried out as I fled to him.
He was without any clothes in his human form.
He fell to his knees as I approached him. One of my arms wrapped around his side as I lowered myself to him, and with concern, I observed the hole in his left chest, where his heart was.
"Please don't die," I wept, burrowing my face into his shoulder as I held him tightly in my arms.
I'd rather die than you," he said.
In his bare human form, his father shoved me aside and lifted Jurius from the ground.
"Will his wound heal? I asked the alpha.
"Look what you did--you cursed!" he shouted at me.
I watched him tearfully as he fled with his son.
In the darkness, I prayed that Jurius would be okay and that his deep wound would heal itself, like the injury on his forehead.
I stood up and walked back home, guided by the moonlight. My grandma and Zira were still asleep. They weren't aware I'd left.
I removed the goodbye note I'd written to them and rolled it up, throwing it into the trash bin.
There was no way I could sleep. I leaned back and looked up at the ceiling, wondering if Jurius was still alive.
I sobbed at the thought of losing him because I didn't know how I'd managed to keep going without him.
