Jurius
They were here, the mating season had ended. I observed from my window the members returning from the forest. There were 30 of them. The pack had received 15 new members and had lost 5, I counted. When a she-wolf finds her mate, she had to leave her pack to dwell among her soulmate pack, that was the law.
I noticed my brother at the back. One of his hands wrapped around the waist of his soulmate and a bright smile on his face as they both walked side by side chatting.
It was wrong for me to eavesdrop on their conversation, but I did so anyways.
"My mom is going to treasure you," I heard Tate tell her.
"I hope so," she retorted; her voice sounded worried.
"She will as much as I do," he paused allowing her to as well, and then they kissed.
I immediately moved from the window as sadness covered my heart. His soulmate is a beautiful, blonde hair wolf shifter. I begrudged my brother that all went well for him for his first mating season unlike me who was cursed to be with a human.
"Jurius, it's dinner time!" my mom shrieked from downstairs.
I didn't move from my spot. It was going to be very difficult to be among the ones who had gotten their soulmate, to see how happy they are when I'm miserable.
After a few minutes, I heard a knock on my door. It was Tate, I smelled him.
"Jurius," he called.
I went to open the door.
I knew why he was here, he too had heard the news.
"I'm sorry you're first mating season didn't go so well," he spoke.
I nodded.
"The following mating season is next year, probably that's when you'll find your soulmate as well," he tried hard to cheer me up.
One of his hands rested on my right shoulder as he spoke to me.
'Yeah, probably," I retorted, forcing a smile.
After I've destroyed my weak, soulmate, I ended this sentence in my head.
"Let's go downstairs, Lena is eager to see you."
I've discovered his soulmate's name, Lena. What a beautiful name.
"She needs to see that I'm the most handsome twin," Tate jested.
I chuckled. Tate was the comical one and I wasn't. I was more of the serious one. One as to be when one day I will be taking over the pack.
Lena ran to hug me as I came downstairs, she felt so warm in my arms and her scent was like honey, sweet. Her eyes were blue, as blue as the ocean.
"Nice to meet you, brother-in-law. I'm sure my soulmate as already told you my name," she glanced over at Tate as she completes her sentence.
Her voice was smooth as butter on a loaf of hot bread and harmonious. I pondered if she could sing.
"Nice to meet you as well and yes he did," I retorted with a smile, one that was genuine this time.
"You have a perfect soulmate," I spoke well about my brother.
Tate hugged me sideways, proudly at the comment. He then went over to hug his mate. I watched them as they both went into the dining room, happily. I admired her from behind, wishing my mate was like her, a wolf shifter.
My mom and sister Kathara embraced Lena. I could see the pleasing look in their eyes, they already treasured her. I imagined my soulmate, a wolf shifter was among them as well, being admired by my family. My dad, the alpha hugged Tate and pat him on his pack. He was so proud of him, I could see it in his eyes.
If he was to ever discover about my human soulmate, he would be ashamed of me, I knew he would. My father had worked hard to carry on his pack without any bad name. I cannot allow my human soulmate to ruin his good reputation or for him to be disappointed in me.
I heard a knock on the front door.
"I'll get that," I exited the dining room.
It felt suffocating being among the lucky ones who had found their soulmate when yours was a human; A curse, and a disgrace.
It was Uncle Lennox at the door. His scent of fresh wood and oil paint always gave him away.
"Jurius," he greeted me with a big hug as I opened the door.
"Uncle Lennox, I'm happy to see you," I told him.
It was always a pleasure to.
He patted me on the back while he kept hugging me, "I'm sorry you were unlucky in finding your mate," he showed me his condolences.
I nodded, motioning away from him.
"Next year will be your time, nephew."
Again, I nodded.
We both walked into the dining room.
Uncle Lennox is the first male wolf shifter to leave his pack to be with his soulmate, also in the history of wolf shifters. His soulmate is an alpha's daughter, the only wolf shifter by blood, of the alpha. He had to be with her to help rule the pack. He is the alpha of the Timbers Pack now. Uncle Lennox always ensures to attend our feast. His soulmate, Sofina is unable to attend sometimes.
The table was covered with a large variety of food, and hands were all about, grabbing for the portion of food they needed.
"Have you heard about Alpha Tyric's son," Uncle Lennox started a conversation.
"What about him?" asked Dad.
Everyone's eyes turned to Uncle Lennox too curiously to know.
"His mate is a curse, a human."
The piece of barbecue ribs dropped from my hand.
Everyone's eyes at the table turned to me, I took up the ribs and started eating like nothing happened. Their eyes eventually returned to Uncle Lennox.
"Glad it's not any of my son," Dad comments.
I immediately placed down the ribs while a heavy feeling of disappointment encircled me.
"His packs are all now against him for being the future alpha for they believe he's weak that's why the Moon Goddess gave him, a frail human," Uncle Lennox continued. "They consider his cursed soulmate to be the sign, that he isn't a strong ruler to carry along the pack after his father steps down."
The glass cup in my hand began to quiver.
"Excuse me," I pushed the seat backward as I placed down the cup.
"Where are you going son?" Dad asked.
"To the bathroom."
He nodded and I stride from the dining room. I listened cautiously for anything else said as I did.
"He's not taking being mateless so easily, isn't it?" I heard Uncle Lennox ask Dad.
"No," Dad retorts.
"Don't worry, time will allow him to get over it, "Uncle Lennox said.
Time surely will when I kill that human, I agreed angrily as I strode upstairs.
