Zoya's P.O.V
As my shift at the clinic came to an end, I couldn't help but feel a sense of relief. The day had been busy, filled with the usual check-ups and consultations, yet the shadow of recent events had cast a subtle unease over everything. I was grateful for the distraction, though, as it allowed me to focus on something other than the unsettling occurrences in our home.
Later that night, as the moon hung high in the sky, I found myself waiting in the lobby of the clinic for Ezra to come pick me up.
The soft glow of lamps illuminated the cozy waiting room, casting a warm ambiance that contrasted the lingering tension from earlier. I was on my own now, save for the night shift staff that patrolled the town, and as I sat on one of the seats, my leg bounced up and down in anticipation.
Cam and I had discussed the plan before her shift was over, and she was as committed as ever to accompany me in meeting Anika, though she emphasized that if she couldn’t stop me, then she would have to accompany me, because she didn’t trust Anika to be with me alone.
Her cautiousness was well-founded, given the circumstances. And I was grateful for her.
After that, we parted ways. Cam went home on her own while I stayed in the clinic, waiting for Ezra to pick me up. He had insisted on doing so to ensure my safety, and while I could hitch a ride with Cam on the way home, I was thankful that I didn’t have to head home all alone, so I didn’t complain.
Restlessness gnawed at me as I waited in the lobby, my thoughts a whirlwind of anticipation and apprehension. I kept glancing at the clock, each passing minute feeling like an eternity.
Finally, the sound of a car approaching drew my attention, and my heart skipped a beat as I recognized the rumble of Ezra's car.
The front door swung open, and there he was, his presence filling the room with an immediate sense of comfort.
He stepped inside, his eyes locking onto mine with a gentle smile that eased my unease. As he closed the door behind him, his arms found their way around me, pulling me into an embrace that felt like home.
"Hey," he murmured against my hair, his lips brushing my forehead. "Have you been waiting long? How was your day?"
I sighed against him, letting his warmth seep into my bones. "Long, but eventful. How about yours?"
He chuckled softly, his fingers tracing soothing patterns on my back. "Busy as always, but nothing I can't handle."
I tilted my head up to meet his gaze, finding solace in the depths of his eyes. "I missed you."
His smile widened, and he leaned down to capture my lips in a tender kiss. It was a moment of calm amidst the chaos that had enveloped us lately. When he pulled back, his thumb brushed over my cheek, his touch reassuring, and his arms did not let go of me.
"I missed you too," he replied, his voice a gentle caress. "Are you feeling better?"
I nodded, grateful for the concern etched in his expression. "Yes, much better.”
His arms tightened around me, and he pressed a gentle kiss to my forehead. "Alright then. Let's go home."
Ezra's hand found mine naturally, our fingers intertwining. It was a simple touch, but it spoke of his unwavering support, a reminder that he was there for me, no matter what.
As we walked towards the car, the sun dipped lower on the horizon, casting a warm golden glow over everything.
The gentle hum of the town's evening activity filled the air, a backdrop to our shared silence. It was a comfortable silence, one that needed no words to convey our feelings.
Once inside the car, the familiar scent of leather and Ezra's cologne enveloped me.
It was a scent that had become synonymous with safety and home.
Turning to him, I found his eyes on me, his gaze filled with an unspoken understanding.
"Well?" I finally asked, breaking the quiet. “Tell me more about your day.”
Ezra's lips curved into a soft smile. "It was productive. Dealt with some pack matters, but now I'm just glad to be here with you."
His words held a warmth that wrapped around me like a cozy blanket.
It was moments like these that made everything else fade into the background.
With a contented sigh, I leaned my head against the window, holding his hand as he drove, relishing in the closeness.
The townscape gradually transformed into the quieter surroundings of our pack's territory. The busy buildings gave way to lush trees and open spaces.
The transition was soothing, a reminder that we were heading back to our haven, away from the hustle and bustle of the outside world.
As we pulled into our driveway, the feeling of being home settled over me. The familiar sight of our house brought a sense of comfort, and I knew that whatever challenges lay ahead, we would face them together.
I thought that if I was once again back in Ezra’s warmth, I would lose my courage to face Anika without him. But if anything, his embrace and the sight of our house only further solidified my determination to put an end to all of this.
Ezra turned off the engine, and I turned to him, a soft smile playing on my lips. "Thank you for picking me up."
He leaned in, his lips brushing against mine in a gentle kiss. "Always, Zoya."
With his hand in mine, we walked towards the front door, ready to face whatever the future held, secure in the knowledge that we had each other to lean on.
“I’ll hit the shower first,” Ezra immediately said as soon as we entered through the front door. “A warm one will definitely feel like heaven after such a long day at work. You don’t mind, do you, babe?”
I smiled and nodded, watching him leave the room with a sense of fondness. The domesticity of our routine brought a sense of normalcy, even in the midst of the unusual circumstances we were facing.
“Yeah,” I said with a chuckle. “Go enjoy your shower, sheriff. The bathroom’s all yours. Meanwhile, I’ll be making dinner. There’s something I want you to try.”
“Oh?” He perked up, his interest piqued. “What is it?”
“Oh, just something from my culture,” I said. “Something my mom used to make while I was growing up.”
Ezra smiled at that. “Oh!” He rubbed his hands together. “Now I can’t wait!” That’s one of the things I loved most about him; he was always eager to enjoy a piece of my heritage with him, and he always appreciated it when I shared that part of myself with him.
As Ezra made his way to the bathroom for a quick shower, his enthusiasm visible in that little skip to his steps, I headed to the kitchen to make him a dish I grew up eating.
However…little did I know…things were about to take an entirely different turn.
