Chapter 174: Home is Where the Heart is Part 1
Zoya’s P.O.V
As we drove home, Ezra and I fell into our usual banter, exchanging playful remarks and laughter.
It was a familiar and comforting rhythm, one that made me appreciate our bond even more.
As we drove along the familiar roads, a sense of contentment washed over me. The events of the past, the terrifying ordeal we had faced, now felt like distant memories.
In their place was the simple joy of being with Ezra, the man I loved, and the anticipation of our future together.
It was moments like this that made me very excited to be a mother. I wanted our child to be part of the good life that we had going on as soon as possible, and I knew for a fact that Ezra would be a very good father.
However, as we continued along the road, I noticed that we were heading in a different direction. Confusion tugged at the corners of my mind, and I couldn't help but ask, “Babe, where are we going? Our place is in the opposite direction."
He turned to me, a mischievous glint in his eyes, and replied, "I thought we could use a change of scenery tonight, love."
I arched an eyebrow, intrigued by his mysterious intentions, a playful glint in my eye. "You know, Ezra, I am starting to think you were taking me to another secret werewolf meeting. You're not planning any surprise initiations, are you?"
Ezra chuckled, his eyes twinkling with amusement. "No secret meetings tonight, I promise. Just you, me, and a delightful dinner."
I leaned back in my seat, sighing contentedly. "Good. I much prefer our romantic dinners to those secret wolf gatherings. They always involve too much howling for my taste."
He grinned. "Well, I thought we'd leave the howling for another night. Tonight, it's all about you."
I feigned surprise, placing a hand over my heart. "Just me? You mean you're not planning to challenge me to a footrace through the woods after dessert?"
Ezra's laughter filled the car, a warm, melodic sound that made my heart swell. "Tempting, but I think I'll pass on the footrace tonight."
We pulled up to our destination not long after, and my surprise grew.
We were at a charming restaurant in town, softly lit with warm, golden hues that spilled out onto the cobblestone pathway.
A canopy of twinkle lights above us created a dreamy ambiance, and the sweet scent of blooming flowers hung in the air.
Ezra opened my car door, and I stepped out, taking in the romantic setting.
It was as if we had been transported to a different world, a world where it was just the two of us and time moved at its own leisurely pace.
"This is a wonderful surprise," I said, feeling a warmth spread through my chest.
Ezra grinned, offering me his arm. "Shall we, my lady?"
I took his arm with a smile, and together we entered the restaurant, ready for a night filled with love, laughter, and delicious food.
Ezra and I stepped inside the restaurant, and a wave of warmth and coziness enveloped us.
The soft, ambient lighting cast a gentle glow, creating an intimate atmosphere that was perfect for a romantic evening.
The walls were adorned with elegant artwork, and large windows offered views of the moonlit street outside.
The tables were dressed in crisp, white linens, adorned with flickering candles in delicate holders. Each table was set with polished silverware and sparkling glassware, creating a sense of sophistication and elegance.
The restaurant had a rich, inviting aroma that tantalized the senses.
It was a delightful blend of savory dishes, simmering sauces, and freshly baked bread. The sound of quiet chatter and laughter filled the air, creating a harmonious backdrop for our evening.
A pianist played a soft, melodic tune on a grand piano in the corner, adding to the romantic ambiance. The notes of the music seemed to dance around us as we made our way to our reserved table.
As we settled in our seats, the warm and cozy ambiance surrounding us, I couldn't help but feel contented with the life I now shared with Ezra.
The terrifying ordeals of the past felt like distant memories, their shadows fading in the glow of our happiness.
Our playful banter during the car ride had filled me with a sense of joy, and I couldn't imagine a better companion for this journey.
Ezra leaned in, his eyes sparkling mischievously. "You know, I used to be quite the chef back in the day. I might even surprise you one day with my culinary skills."
I chuckled, brushing a strand of hair from my face. "Oh, really? I'll hold you to that, Mr. Culinary Expert."
In all honesty, Ezra was indeed a good cook and I had tasted several of his dishes before. He liked to get me to try new things and I loved the excitement on his face when I gave him a compliment. Still, it was fun to tease him as well.
He grinned, his hand reaching for mine. "Consider it a promise, Mrs. Culinary Critic."
Our laughter still lingered in the air as we perused the menu, and maybe it's just another bout of pregnancy hormones, but I felt an overwhelming sense of gratitude for the love and security that now defined our relationship.
However, just as I was about to talk about the restaurant's offers with him, a sudden interruption shattered the idyllic moment.
I noticed my parents, Silas, and Anika entering the restaurant.
My heart skipped a beat as a flood of painful memories rushed back, memories of struggles for approval, moments when I had desperately sought my mother's affection and never quite received it.
My first instinct was to hide my burgeoning pregnant belly, fearing my mother's disapproval.
But to my surprise, as they approached our table, my mother's eyes welled up with tears.
Without a word, she enveloped me in a warm, tight embrace. The unexpected gesture left me stunned.
I froze in my seat, unable to react.
Amidst her tears, she began apologizing, her voice choked with emotion. "Zoya, I'm so sorry for everything. I've been blind for so long, but I see it now. I should have been there for you."
My father nodded, his eyes also glistening. "We should have been more supportive, more understanding. We love you, Zoya, we thought you should know that."
My heart swelled with emotion as tears welled up in my eyes.
I had expected the worst when I saw my parents enter the restaurant, but their actions had been nothing short of a surprise.
Tearfully, my mother continued her speech, her voice trembling with remorse.
"Zoya, I need to tell you something," she said, her eyes locked onto mine. "It's about your ex, Ravi, and his wife, Tania."
I leaned forward, my curiosity piqued. I didn't really care about them anymore, but she acted like it was something urgent, so it surely must be. "What is it?" I asked
She sighed deeply, as if she had been carrying a heavy burden for years.
"As it turns out, Ravi and Tania cheated our family out of several thousands of dollars. They convinced us to invest in a company, promising huge returns. We trusted them, and they took all that money and fled."
Ha! Was I hearing this right?
