Torn Between my Alpha Mates

Chapter 158: Demonic Curses Part 1

Ch. 158 / 177 Dec 10, 2025

Zoya’s P.O.V

Ezra finally nods, his gaze fixed on the floor as if recounting a painful memory. He inhaled deeply, gathering his thoughts. I didn’t push him, understanding that he was trying his best to find the right thing to say.

"It started after we moved into the old house," he began, his voice carrying a weight of reminiscence and a touch of grief that made my heart ache as well. "Lily… she began to have these random panic attacks, like sudden waves of fear would just wash over her. She'd clutch her chest, gasping for breath as if she couldn't escape some unseen terror."

As he spoke, I could feel the emotions in the room shifting, a hurricane of concern and curiosity enveloping us.

My heart went out to him, knowing how helpless it must have felt to witness Lily in such distress. More so now that he was seeing me experience the same thing.

Ezra's brow furrowed as he continued, his eyes distant as if reliving those moments. "Then there were the episodes. She would just… collapse. It was as if she was being overwhelmed by something, something beyond our understanding. And every time it happened, I felt like I was losing her a little more."

He shut his eyes tight, as though trying to dispel the dark memories he had invoked by recounting this story. “I wanted to help her, but I didn’t know how to. I just thought it was caused by fatigue or something.”

Ezra let out a heavy sigh, opening his eyes, his fingers raking through his hair as he fought to articulate the enigma they had faced. "I spent countless nights researching, talking to healers, trying to find a way to ease her suffering. But it was like chasing shadows. No one had any answers and when I asked Lily what had been causing these…episodes…she told me she couldn’t remember."

His voice held a tinge of frustration, as if the memory of his inability to help Lily still haunted him.

I could see the deep well of emotions behind his eyes, the pain of witnessing someone he loved in distress, and the guilt of not being able to save her.

"It was only one day," he continued, his voice taking on a softer tone. "After months of these episodes, she seemed… different. Calm. Content, even. She told me to call Silas over for dinner, said she had an announcement to make." He paused, his gaze now focused on his brother, like Silas was a puzzle he was trying to solve but to no avail.

His eyes were distant as he relived that fateful day. "It was like a glimmer of hope, that day. Lily… she was smiling again, her laughter filling the house like a melody. It felt like we were finally breaking free from the darkness that had gripped her for so long… Or so I thought."

I could feel the ache in his words, the longing for what could have been, the happiness that had been so cruelly snatched away. I wanted to hug him, but I didn’t know if such a gesture was welcome to him at the moment.

I wanted to take some of the weight off his shoulders, but I didn’t know how to do that. His life journey with Lily was their own, and I didn’t know if I could comfort him since my similar experience with the demon was most likely bringing back bad memories.

Maybe it was best to give him space…

Ezra's gaze dropped once more, his fingers tightening into fists, his knuckles turning white. "And then… that night," he continued, his voice cracking slightly. "I came home to find her… gone. Silas was there, with the knife. He claimed she was already dead when he arrived, that he had tried to save her and that it was too late, but I… I don't know."

As he spoke, the room seemed to grow quieter, the weight of his words sinking in. I could almost envision Lily's face, radiant with the fleeting happiness that had eluded her for so long.

I empathized even more now that I, too, was experiencing the same thing. And what’s worse was that my child’s life also hung in the balance.

Silas's voice bristled with defensiveness as he spoke, his eyes flashing with frustration and exasperation. "You have to believe me,” he protested, “Lily was already gone when I got there. There was no chance to save her. I tried to revive her, but it was too late."

I could almost sense the tension in the room as Silas tried to convey his side of the story.

“There was no scent other than Ezra’s and Lily's in the house when I got there, too,” he continued. “Which was why I was so convinced that it had been you, Ezra… I swear, I didn’t do it…”

His emotions were palpable, his desperation to be understood evident in every word he spoke. I could picture him, standing in that house, his heart heavy with grief and guilt, trying to explain the unexplainable.

But Lady Athena's response was calm and measured, her eyes holding a depth of ancient knowledge. "Silas, the demon doesn't need a physical form to exert its influence. It’s like a ghost. It's not like any ordinary creature. Hence, it does not leave a trace – no scent or footprint.”

Lady Athena continued to explain, "The demon's influence is insidious. It feeds on fear, grief, and despair. It can manipulate emotions, twist perceptions. But it is not corporeal."

Anika's gaze was thoughtful, her voice carrying a note of curiosity. "So, it can't possess anyone, but it can influence their actions and thoughts?"

Lady Athena nodded, her expression solemn. "Exactly. It's a malevolent force that preys on vulnerabilities, a shadowy presence that can drive even the strongest of individuals to the brink."

“So you’re saying that it manipulated Lily into killing herself?” I asked the question that nobody dared to say aloud.

Lady Athena nodded, her facial expression grave. “I hate to put it that way, but unfortunately, that is correct,” she said. “But I do hope that it gives you all some comfort to know that, even though it was Lily’s hand that drove the blade into her body, it was not her mind that was at work. She did not do it on her own volition, so your memory of her remains untainted.”
