Chapter 160: Reconciliation Long Overdue Part 1
Ezra’s P.O.V
My body felt heavy as despair wrapped around me like a suffocating shroud.
The pressure of the revelation crushed me, my mind whirling with the torment of our family's past, trying to think of a way out of this situation but to no avail. I sank to the floor, as if the weight of my own guilt and confusion was pulling me down.
I ran a hand through my hair, the action feeling futile against the storm of emotions raging within me.
"Who... Who could have done this?" I murmured to no one in particular, my voice a mere whisper amidst the overwhelming chaos in my mind.
Who placed this curse on my family, causing us so much pain and suffering?
The room seemed to close in on me, the walls echoing with the pain of our history. The memories of Lily's suffering, of my own helplessness, surged forth like a tidal wave, threatening to drown me.
It was a despair I hadn't felt in a long time, a haunting reminder of the darkness that had plagued our lives.
As I grappled with the weight of the curse that had befallen us, my thoughts turned to her in a way that it hadn’t for a while now since Zoya’s brilliance entered my life.
I closed my eyes, trying to imagine her sweet, beautiful face amidst the torment of hell. The image was unbearable, a heart-wrenching vision that pierced through me like a dagger. It seemed unfathomable. Impossible.
There was no way… right? There was no way. It couldn’t be. Someone with a soul as pure as hers had no place in eternal damnation.
My hands clenched into fists, and I fought back the tears that threatened to spill. Lily deserved happiness, not this eternal suffering.
Anger mixed with the sorrow within me as I tried to comprehend the enormity of what had been done to her, to us.
As I knelt on the floor, the thought of this horrible curse and the memories it had conjured felt like an anchor, pulling me down into a sea of emotions, unable to swim back up the surface.
“If it’s any consolation, Lily is not the only victim of the demon’s cruelty.” Lady Athena's words hit me like a cold gust of wind, chilling me to the core.
I knew she wanted to reassure me that none of it had anything to do with Lily’s nature as a person. But still… the weight of her explanation settled heavily on my shoulders.
The room seemed to grow darker, as if the shadows themselves were listening to her words. "Every soul the demon holds suffers damnation," she said. "It does not know the difference between pure and evil."
I turned my attention to her, my gaze locked onto her as if seeking some reassurance, some sign that there was a way to undo the horror that had befallen Lily and our family.
"So you're saying that every soul, no matter how small their sins, must face the underworld?" My voice sounded hollow, a reflection of the turmoil swirling within me.
Whether she said yes or no wasn't any consolation to me. It did not change the fact that Lily was unjustly punished for something that wasn't her fault.
Lady Athena nodded solemnly, her eyes carrying the weight of countless years. "Yes, every soul must face its sins, must undergo purification. Only then can they move on to their final destination."
My fists clenched involuntarily as a surge of anger coursed through me. "And if it's a demon that's keeping her there? What then?"
The words were a whisper, as if voicing them too loudly would make them even more real.
Lady Athena's gaze held mine, her eyes a mirror to the pain that I felt. "Demons are entities of darkness, Ezra. They thrive on suffering, they revel in pain. If one has latched onto her soul, it's likely because it's found a source of torment to feed upon."
A bitter taste filled my mouth as I grappled with the notion of Lily's suffering becoming a source of nourishment for a malevolent being.
I swallowed hard, my throat dry, my heart heavy. "Is there a way to save her? To free her from this curse?"
The words were a desperate plea, a thread of hope that I clung to even as darkness threatened to consume everything.
Lady Athena's gaze softened, and for a moment, I saw a glimmer of reassurance in her eyes. "There is a way, but it won't be easy. We'll need to find the source of this curse and confront the demon that has latched onto her soul."
A spark of determination ignited within me, a fire fueled by love and the need to rescue Lily from the clutches of darkness. Of course, I no longer loved Lily like I loved Zoya.
But it can't be denied that she still had an important role in my life, and that itself could not be erased, nor could I keep myself from caring about her wellbeing even in death.
Lady Athena's words hung in the air like a heavy mist, carrying with them a weight that seemed almost insurmountable.
I exchanged glances with Silas, the tension in the room palpable. He looked just as stricken as I was, and in that moment, I was reminded of how, once upon a time, we both had loved
Lily the same way.
Cam shifted in her seat, her brows furrowed with concern. "Are you saying that we have to find out which ancestor of ours started this curse?"
Lady Athena nodded gravely, her expression reflecting the seriousness of the situation. "Yes, that's correct. To break the curse, you must find the descendant of the one who initiated it. Only then can you sever the link and cleanse the demon's influence."
Well, crap. We didn't even know who started the curse; how could we possibly find their descendant?
A heavy silence settled over the room, broken only by the soft crackling of the fireplace.
The implications of what we were facing were overwhelming.
I clenched my fists, my mind racing as I tried to piece together our family's history, to identify a potential ancestor who could have initiated such a devastating curse.
