Zoya's P.O.V
Anika's surprise was evident as her gaze shifted to the bracelet in her hand, her brows knitting together in confusion.
I watched closely as her expression shifted from perplexity to realization.
She examined the accessory closely, and her eyes widened as she noticed the same transformation that had caught my attention – the bracelet, which might have been shiny and gorgeous once, was now obscured by a layer of tar-like black substance.
"What in the world..." Anika muttered under her breath, her tone a mixture of disbelief and intrigue.
Ezra, Silas, and I watched as Anika's fingers delicately traced the edges of the strange black residue. And when she removed her hand, the black residue clung to her fingertips as if trying to poison her with its murky miasma.
“I don’t…get it.” Anika looked at her fingers closely, confusion and something akin to disgust in her expression. “It’s sticky…not powdery…when did it get here? My silver bracelet was alright just this morning.”
The way it clung to the bracelet was unsettling, as if it was trying to envelop the delicate piece of jewelry in its murky grasp.
It was as though the very air around us had grown heavy with an unnatural energy, making it hard to ignore the bizarre occurrence.
Silas's curiosity got the better of him, and he leaned in closer to the bracelet, his nose almost touching the surface of the black substance.
I held my breath as he did so, his subsequent reaction confirming my suspicions.
"It smells like sulfur," Silas announced, his voice tinged with disgust as he wrinkled his nose. "You know, that distinct rotten egg scent…"
Holy shit.
I felt like I was at the precipice of a breakthrough, but I couldn't find the right force to keep propelling me forward.
It felt like the answer was at the tip of my tongue, but I couldn't spell it out! Dammit!
My heart raced at his words, a sudden rush of unease sweeping through me.
The smell of sulfur... it was the same scent Anika had detected earlier at Ezra’s old house – the very aroma that had accompanied my unsettling feeling of being watched back at my old cabin.
My headache intensified as I tried to piece together the puzzle, the threads of the unknown weaving tighter around us.
I glanced at Anika, then at Ezra, my eyes searching for any sign of understanding.
They didn't seem to notice the urgency in my gaze. They were curious about the bracelet, yes, but they didn't look like they thought it was anything important.
To be fair, it would seem like a trivial matter indeed… if I hadn't seen the exact same thing happen to that lampshade back in Ezra's old house…
"I've seen this before," I said, my voice trembling slightly as I struggled to remember the exact details. "In the old house... there was something covered in this same substance. A silver lamp…? Or a candle holder…? I can't quite recall... Ugh, my head..."
The effort to remember felt like a weight pressing against my temples, and I clutched my head with a frustrated sigh.
My headache had gotten worse, my thoughts muddled by the pressure that seemed to be building in my mind.
Damn this weak human brain!
Ezra's concern was evident in his gaze, his hand reaching out to gently touch my arm. "Zoya, take a deep breath. We'll figure this out, okay?"
As I inhaled deeply, I couldn't shake the sense that these strange occurrences were all interconnected.
The black substance, the scent of sulfur, Lily's haunting presence in the mirror... they were pieces of a puzzle that I was determined to solve.
I just didn't have the brain capacity to do so now…
Cam's reassuring voice cut through the tension that had settled around us, her calm demeanor a source of comfort amidst the strange circumstances.
"Ezra, it's possible that Zoya's confusion is due to the hit she took when she fell," she said, addressing him directly. "While it wasn't a major injury, it might be affecting her memory and thoughts. She should recover after some rest."
Ezra's worried gaze shifted from me to Cam and back again, torn between his concern for my well-being and his determination to uncover the truth behind the unsettling events.
The room felt like a haven of emotions, each of us grappling with our roles in this unexpected turn of events.
I felt frustrated. I knew I was on to something. I just didn't know what it was, or how to get there. I'm helpless.
"Zoya, I know you want answers," Ezra began gently, "but you're not yourself right now. You need to rest and recover."
I appreciated his concern, but the sense of urgency that had gripped me earlier still held strong.
The memory of Lily's tortured face in the mirror haunted my thoughts, pushing me to confront the darkness that seemed to shroud Ezra's old house.
"I can't just rest, Ezra," I insisted, my voice wavering but determined. "There's something there... something I need to understand. I can't shake the feeling that Lily's trapped in that house, that there's a connection between her and this strange substance, the strange happenings… You believe me, don't you?"
Cam exchanged a concerned look with Ezra, her gaze filled with both understanding and empathy.
No one spoke for a few long moments, and I didn't need the tense silence to continue for me to know that they found it difficult to believe me.
Both Ezra and Silas looked distressed at every mention of Lily and what I insisted was her fate after death.
I sympathized with them — heck, I felt sorry for them. I knew Lily was a sore topic for these two and for me to keep going on about her being unable to have a happy afterlife, they must be so upset.
Still… I couldn't help but feel frustrated that no one would consider the possibility that I may be telling the truth, which I was.
