Zoya’s P.O.V
As I watched them, a sense of pride welled up within me.
Our family had weathered the storm, emerging stronger and more united than ever.
And as we faced an uncertain future, I couldn't help but feel optimistic, knowing that the bonds of family and friendship would always guide us through the darkest of times.
I sighed, leaning back against my pillow. I was in the clinic today, having undergone my examinations for the month.
Cam, with her warm smile and caring demeanor, entered my chamber, her eyes filled with curiosity and excitement.
She was like a ray of sunshine in the room, and her presence was always a source of comfort. In a room as dull and stale as a hospital chamber, I was glad that her presence brought me some semblance of comfort.
"Hey, Zoya," she greeted me, her voice soft and gentle. "How did your examinations with your doctor go? For real this time?” She laughed, referencing the time I lied to Ezra about getting some examinations done so I could snoop around his old house. “Are you and the baby okay?"
I couldn't help but return her smile as I replied, "Yes, Cam, everything went perfectly. All the tests came back great, and the baby is healthy."
It was a relief to share this news with a friend who had been there for me throughout this journey. Second to Ezra, she was the most helpful presence to me throughout the entirety of this journey.
Cam's eyes twinkled with curiosity, and she leaned in a little closer, as if sharing a secret. "Did you find out the gender?" she asked, her voice filled with anticipation.
A soft chuckle escaped my lips as I shook my head. "No, Ezra and I decided to keep it a surprise. We want that moment to be special and filled with joy for both of us."
Cam's smile widened, and she nodded in understanding. "That's beautiful, Zoya. I'm sure it will be an amazing moment when the time comes."
My friendship with Cam had unfolded naturally, and without me having to ask for it, she quickly became my most loyal friend and colleague. At this point, it would be a crime not to consider her as part of my family, which I did.
“You know,” I joked, “I had been so worried that the doctor would take a look at my scans and suddenly scream bloody murder because instead of seeing a human being, the test will instead show a pup.” I laughed at my ridiculous thought. “Thankfully, though, that did not happen.”
Cam's laughter filled the room, a delightful sound that eased my nerves and brought a smile to my face. Her light-hearted response was exactly what I needed to chase away any lingering worries.
"Oh, Zoya, that would have been quite the surprise," Cam quipped, her eyes sparkling with amusement. "Imagine the look on the doctor's face."
I joined in the laughter, relieved to have such a supportive friend by my side during this journey. "Yeah, it would have been a headline in the news for sure," I replied, playing along with the imaginary scenario. "Wolf pup miraculously appears in ultrasound!"
Cam's grin widened, and she shook her head playfully. "Well, I'm glad that didn't happen. But in all seriousness, you don’t have to worry about such things. We wolves do not transform until at least five years of age, so you can rest easily."
Even though I wasn’t seriously concerned about it, her words were still comforting to me, and I couldn't help but feel a rush of warmth and gratitude toward her.
Maybe it was just the pregnancy hormones or whatever, but another rush of gratitude and sentimentality surged through me, pumped throughout my system by my trusty heart.
A sound coming from outside pulled me from my conversation with Cam to look out the window, where a familiar car was pulling up the clinic’s driveway.
I watched through the window as Ezra's car found a spot in the parking lot.
The anticipation made my heart skip a beat. He parked the car with the practiced ease of someone who had done it countless times.
Stepping out, he closed the car door behind him, and our eyes locked through the window. His smile was like sunshine breaking through the clouds, and he waved at me.
I waved back with a grin of my own.
Ezra made his way up the steps of the clinic, and I couldn't help the smile that spread wider across my face. The door to my room opened, and there he stood, tall and strong, his eyes filled with warmth and affection.
"Hey there," he greeted me, his voice a soothing melody.
"Hi," I replied, my heart fluttering as he walked over to my bedside.
Cam, sensing the moment, excused herself with a friendly smile and a promise to visit soon. “See you when I see you,” she told me. “Preferably tomorrow.”
I chuckled and gave her a playful wink. “Definitely tomorrow.”
She left the room, leaving it open as Ezra and I were about to leave as well.
Ezra extended a hand, and I placed mine in his.
With his gentle assistance, I carefully swung my legs over the side of the bed. As I stood up, leaning on him for support, I couldn't help but feel a rush of gratitude.
Together, we made our way out of the room and into his waiting car. The familiar scent of his cologne and the comfort of his presence enveloped me as we embarked on our journey back home.
