Zoya's P.O.V
As much as I yearned to dive headlong into its mysteries, Anika's caution echoed the truth of the matter.
"Sometimes ignorance is a shield," Anika continued, her gaze holding a mixture of wisdom and concern. "The supernatural realm can be both beautiful and dangerous, and it's not always easy to discern one from the other. We must tread carefully, for knowledge can attract attention from entities we might not be prepared to face."
Her words settled over me like a shroud, the weight of her warning mingling with the exhilaration of the unknown.
As I looked around the opulent room, I couldn't help but feel a heightened sense of awareness. I was on the cusp of something extraordinary, something that extended far beyond the boundaries of the everyday world.
Just as Anika and I were enveloped in the hushed conversation, a voice resonated through the room like a spell being cast. It was a voice that held the weight of age and experience, commanding attention and respect.
“Wisely spoken, Anika.”
I turned my head to see a woman enter the room, her presence radiating an undeniable air of authority.
The woman was middle-aged, her features etched with a life's worth of experiences and knowledge. Her eyes held a depth that seemed to peer into the very essence of one's soul, and her posture exuded strength and grace.
She moved with a certain elegance, her every step a declaration of her confidence and wisdom. It was clear that she was not just Anika's grandmother; she was a force to be reckoned with in her own right. A powerful wolf, and perhaps an even more powerful witch.
Anika's face softened as she stood to greet her grandmother. "Grandmother, this is Zoya," she introduced me with a touch of reverence in her voice. “Zoya, this is my grandmother. Lady Athena.”
The woman's gaze met mine, and I felt an almost electric connection as her eyes locked onto mine. It was as if she was searching my very soul, delving into the depths of my being to uncover the truths that lay hidden within.
"Zoya," her voice was rich and resonant, carrying with it a weight that demanded my attention. "You have already captured the attention of something beyond the mundane."
I felt a shiver run down my spine, my skin prickling with a mix of anticipation and trepidation. The words hung in the air like a foreboding promise, stirring a sense of unease within me.
Anika's grandmother continued, her voice carrying a hint of tension and urgency. "A curse has been set upon you, a malevolent force that clings to your very essence. It haunts you, like a shadow cast by the moonlight."
My breath caught in my throat, and I instinctively clutched my stomach protectively, as if shielding my unborn child from the ominous presence that seemed to linger around me.
The woman's eyes never left mine, her gaze unyielding as she spoke…
Anika's grandmother, whom I now knew to be Lady Athena, regarded me with a thoughtful expression. Her gaze held a depth of understanding that seemed to cut through the veil of the mundane and peer directly into the realm of the supernatural.
"Are you with child?" Her voice was gentle yet penetrating, the question weighted with significance.
I nodded, my heart pounding as I confirmed the truth. "Yes, I am."
She nodded in response, as if she had already intuited this fact before I even spoke. "Describe this entity to me. In as much detail as you can."
I took a deep breath, my mind racing to capture the elusive features of the shadowy presence that had haunted me. "It's like a shadow, shapeless yet defined. I can't see a clear form, but I feel its presence moving around me, watching me. It has red eyes, like two crimson flames burning in the darkness. And it's accompanied by a distinct scent of sulfur, like something otherworldly."
Anika's eyes widened in recognition as I described the entity. She reached for her wrist and removed the bracelet she had worn, the one that had turned black in the presence of the malevolent force.
"Remember what I had told you, amma," she said, holding it out for both of us to see. The once-beautiful piece of jewelry now resembled a darkened relic, tarnished by some sinister influence. “See how it had changed color? Turned silver to tar?”
As Lady Athena observed the bracelet, a knowing look crossed her features. She held it up to the light, the blackened metal glinting in the faint illumination. "This is the work of a demon," she said, her tone grave, before she turned to pin me with her gaze. “What have you done to incite the curse of a malicious demon, my child?”
