Torn Between my Alpha Mates

Chapter 165: Running Out of Time

Ch. 165 / 177 Dec 10, 2025

Silas’s P.O.V

"I'm sorry, Anika," I murmured, my voice tinged with regret. The words held the depth of my remorse, not just for the way I had treated her, but for the ways in which I had been blind to my own faults. "I've been so caught up in my own battles, my own demons, that I failed to see how my actions affected you."

Anika's expression softened, her gaze a blend of understanding and acceptance. "Silas," her voice was surprisingly gentle, a reassuring melody amidst the turmoil of my emotions, "we both had our reasons for coming together, for seeking revenge."

A heavy sigh escaped me as I rubbed a hand over my tired eyes.

"You're right," I admitted, the weight of my own words settling upon me. "We were bound by a shared pain, a common enemy. But in the midst of it all, I neglected to see you as more than just an ally."

As the evening breeze rustled the leaves around us, I found myself searching her eyes for any hint of resentment, any sign that she might want to walk away. Her gaze, unwavering and steady, held a depth of emotion that mirrored my own turmoil.

"Still… I won't pretend that I don't care about you, Anika," I continued. "Despite my flaws, despite my mistakes, you've become someone I confide in, someone I consider a friend."

Anika's silence gave me the space to voice what had been lingering between us, a sense of unfinished business that needed to be resolved.

"I want you to know," I finally said, my words sincere and raw, "that if you want to break off this... this mating bond, if you want to leave and find a better path, I won't hold you back. You deserve more than the tangled mess I've dragged you into."

Anika's gaze never left mine, her eyes revealing the depth of her emotions. The air between us seemed charged with a sense of possibility, our choices hanging heavy in the air.

"Silas," she began, her voice a whisper carried by the wind, "we've both made mistakes, and we've both been shaped by our pasts. But that doesn't mean we can't forge a different future."

I decided to add a little bit more to my spiel, “But… if you choose to stay with me…I’ll do better this time.”

She stared at me, and I didn’t look away from her. “Let’s just get this demon mess over with first, shall we?” was her only reply. “Let’s do this first before we deal with anything else.”

Her words were like a steady anchor in the midst of my swirling thoughts, pulling me back to the pressing matter at hand.

The demon, the curse – these were the immediate threats that needed our attention.

With a nod of agreement, I focused on the task ahead.

"You're right," I replied, my tone determined. "We need to deal with the goddamn demon first. Whatever comes after, we'll face it together."

Her eyes held a mixture of relief and resolve, as if our shared understanding had solidified a bond between us.

I appreciated her willingness to prioritize our current challenge over our personal struggles.

I watched the moon's ascent, its silvery glow casting an ethereal light upon the rugged terrain around us as the light of the sun faded and the sky grew darker.

As we combed through the rocks, my fingers brushing against cold, hard surfaces, I couldn't help but be struck by the symbolism of our search.

Just as we were seeking a weapon to break the curse, we were also searching for a way to dismantle the barriers between us.

"Anika," I said one last time, breaking the silence that had settled between us, "I want you to know something. Whatever happens, I won't repeat the mistakes of the past."

She turned her gaze toward me. "What?"

With a deep breath, I continued, my voice resolute, "If you choose to stay with me, if you choose me as your mate, then I promise to be the partner you deserve. No more comparisons, no more unrealistic expectations."

Anika's expression softened, and I saw a glimmer of something that resembled gratitude in her eyes. Her nod was a silent acknowledgement, a recognition of my commitment to change.

As we continued our search, the sky above grew darker, the stars twinkling like distant promises.

But halfway through the search, I noticed the thread around my wrist, the red string that Lady Athena had tied to keep the demon at bay…and felt my heart slam against by ribcage in fear.

"Anika," I said, my voice tinged with urgency, "we need to hurry. The thread…it’s turning black."
