Chapter 137: Does The Truth Even Exist? Part 1
Ezra's P.O.V
"What is the meaning of this?" I demanded as soon as I recovered my voice from the shackles of violent surprise.
My blood boiled as anger surged within me, my protective instincts on high alert at the sight before me.
Zoya's unconscious form lay on the ground, vulnerable and defenseless, while Anika stood there, in the center of the room, Silas next to me, their presence both unwanted, a volatile mix of uncertainty and tension.
I immediately went to Zoya's side, taking her unconscious form into my arms.
"Capture them," I commanded, pointing at the two of them when I heard Gustav and Emiel approach, my voice hard and unyielding. In my mind, I used my power as an Alpha to send a telepathic message to my pack members, ordering them to come to the scene as fast as possible.
Gustav and Emiel moved into action, their expressions determined as they advanced on Anika and Silas.
The air crackled with the charged energy of the moment, the weight of my authority pressing down on the scene.
But Silas's voice cut through the tension, his voice full of frustration and urgency. "Wait, Ezra, you don't understand. I didn't plan any of this."
I glared at him, my anger flaring anew. "You expect me to believe that after everything?" I snapped.
Silas's expression was conflicted, his gaze locked onto Zoya's still form. "I know you don't trust me, and that's fine. But I didn't bring Anika here. I don't know why she's here either. I swear on the Moon goddess. No matter how much I want to throttle you, I would never do anything to hurt Zoya. Never again."
The confusion in his voice was evident, his words carrying a genuine note of bewilderment.
Anika, too, seemed unsettled, her defiance giving way to something that resembled unease.
She raised her hands in reluctant surrender. "Look," she said, backing away. "I can explain. I simply wanted to talk to Zoya to try and stop the war."
She slowly put her hands down. “Since you two brothers couldn’t stop going at each other’s throats, I thought that talking to Ezra’s mate would’ve been the next best thing, if I couldn't convince you two to make peace." She continued, "I came into your pack's territory to find Zoya in private, in hopes that I would be able to catch her on her way to work, but then I saw her turning in the opposite direction instead."
As I listened to her explanation, my anger simmered beneath the surface, battling with my desire for answers. The situation was more complex than I had anticipated, and my instincts warred with the need to keep Zoya safe.
If she didn't do this, then who did?
I decided to keep pressing her.
"So, you decided to take matters into your own hands?" I said, my voice a blend of skepticism and frustration. "And you thought ambushing her here was the best way to go about it?"
Anika's expression was painted with regret and determination. "I know it seems reckless, but I didn't mean any harm. I just wanted to talk to her, to make her understand that there's another way – a way to prevent unnecessary bloodshed."
My jaw tightened as I processed her words.
"I swear on my life and all things I hold dear," Anika insisted, "I followed Zoya here purely out of curiosity and saw her get into this house. And now here we are."
It was indeed true that the tension between Silas and me had escalated beyond control, and the looming threat of a war had cast a shadow over both packs.
And perhaps… it was also true that Anika's actions were driven by a desperate need to preserve the lives of her pack members, even if it meant taking unconventional measures. She did reach out to me first, after all.
Silas, still standing nearby, watched the scene with a mixture of concern and guilt.
His gaze remained fixed on Zoya, his own emotions a whirlwind of regret and unease.
For a moment, our eyes met, and a silent understanding passed between us – a recognition of the mutual vulnerability we shared in that moment.
For Zoya, we could set aside our pride.
"She doesn't appear to be physically hurt," I finally said, my voice softer and calmer now. "But I can't shake the feeling that there's more to this."
I cast a glance at Anika, who was watching from a distance, her expression the epitome of apprehension and uncertainty.
She had come here with a purpose, unconventional as though it might have been, and it seemed that her intentions truly weren't malicious.
The thought that perhaps she used my confrontation with Silas in the city as a distraction to get to Zoya crossed my mind briefly…
But then I shook it out of my mind. There was no use overthinking things. We needed to focus on giving Zoya the medical aid she needed.
"We need to ensure she's safe," I said, standing up and looking at Silas and Anika. "And we need answers."
Soon after, my telepathic message to my pack members proved fruitful.
Cam's arrival was swift, her concerned gaze landing on Zoya's still form.
She didn't waste any time, immediately assessing the situation and making arrangements to transport Zoya to my new house, where she could receive proper care and attention.
All her clinic experience had come in handy now, it seemed.
I was grateful for her steady presence. She did not need to be told what to do. I was glad that Zoya found a friend in her.
Moreover, Silas and Anika were to be brought along to the pack house as well, flanked by guards to ensure no further disruptions.
We couldn't risk them running away, as Silas had a track record of doing so.
