The days passed in a blur for Bella as she tried to keep up appearances, masking her growing fatigue from Kael. She wanted to enjoy this time with him, to bask in the joy of their pregnancy, but every day felt like a battle against her own body. Her energy was waning, and the nausea that had plagued her seemed to worsen with each passing day. Still, she kept her struggles to herself, unwilling to burden Kael with her fears. He had enough on his plate, managing the pack and preparing for the future.
But no matter how hard she tried to hide it, Misery wasn’t fooled. She had been watching Bella closely ever since the pregnancy news had broken, sensing the dangers long before Bella could admit them to herself. The elderly wolf had insisted on constant monitoring, checking on Bella’s health, her strength, and her emotional state. Bella appreciated Misery’s care, but the constant scrutiny only made her feel more vulnerable. She hated feeling like a patient under a microscope, especially when she couldn’t offer Kael the happiness he deserved.
Kael, for his part, had been busy preparing for their future as parents. He was actively setting up a nursery, gathering supplies, and making sure that the pack was ready to support them. It was clear that he was excited—more than excited, actually—about the idea of becoming a father. But despite his enthusiasm, there was a growing tension in Bella’s chest. She couldn’t shake the fear that Kael might be blind to the risks she was facing. He was so focused on their child, so full of optimism about their future, that he didn’t see how the pregnancy was slowly draining her.
But that all changed one afternoon.
Bella was sitting at the kitchen table, trying to finish a meal that she couldn’t bring herself to eat. Her stomach churned, and the exhaustion weighed heavily on her. She glanced at the clock, noting that Kael would be back from a meeting with the pack soon. She forced a small smile and tried to push through the discomfort.
Just then, Kael walked into the room, his eyes immediately landing on her. His brow furrowed when he saw the barely touched plate in front of her and the faint pallor in her cheeks.
“Bella,” he said softly, concern flooding his voice. “You look pale. Are you okay?”
Bella quickly stood up, wiping her hands on the napkin in front of her, trying to hide the tremor in her fingers. “I’m fine,” she insisted, her voice wavering. “Just… tired. You know, with everything going on.”
Kael didn’t buy it. He crossed the room in a few quick strides and reached for her hand, his touch gentle but firm. “No, you’re not fine. You’ve been saying that for days now, and I’m starting to worry. What’s really going on, Bella?”
Bella hesitated, her chest tightening. She had been trying to protect him, to keep him from seeing the toll this pregnancy was taking on her, but now she couldn’t avoid the truth any longer. She opened her mouth to speak, but the words caught in her throat. What if telling him only made things worse? What if he couldn’t handle it?
Kael squeezed her hand gently, coaxing her to speak. “Bella, you know you can trust me. Whatever it is, we’ll face it together. But you have to tell me what’s going on.”
The sincerity in his voice finally broke through the wall of fear Bella had built around her heart. She closed her eyes, taking a deep breath before finally giving in.
“The pregnancy,” she said quietly, her voice trembling. “It’s… it’s not like a normal pregnancy, Kael. The baby’s hybrid blood is causing complications. Rapid growth. My body isn’t handling it as well as I thought. The strain… it’s too much sometimes. I feel weaker every day.”
Kael’s expression shifted from concern to shock as the words sank in. His grip on her hand tightened, his entire body going rigid as he processed what she had just said.
“Bella…” he whispered, as if the reality of the situation hadn’t fully hit him until that moment. His eyes searched hers for some sign that she was lying, but there was none. The raw truth was laid bare before him.
“I didn’t want to tell you,” she continued, her voice shaking. “I didn’t want to worry you, but it’s getting worse. I don’t know how much longer I can hide it.”
“Bella, no,” Kael said, his voice thick with emotion. “Why didn’t you tell me sooner? I should have known.”
She looked up at him, her heart breaking. “I didn’t want to burden you. You’re already carrying so much—leading the pack, planning for the future. I didn’t want to add to it.”
Kael let out a long breath, his hand going to his forehead as if trying to gather his thoughts. For a moment, the weight of the situation hung between them, thick and suffocating. Then, slowly, Kael lifted his head and met her eyes, his expression softening.
“I would never see you as a burden, Bella,” he said fiercely. “I promised you that I would always protect you, didn’t I? This is no different. We’re in this together, no matter what happens.”
Bella’s throat tightened as tears welled up in her eyes. “I’m scared, Kael. I don’t know if I’m strong enough for this. I don’t know if I can handle it.”
Kael stepped forward, closing the distance between them. He cupped her face gently in his hands, wiping away the single tear that had escaped. His eyes softened, and his voice dropped to a whisper.
“You are stronger than you think,” he said, his words full of conviction. “And I’ll be here with you every step of the way. We’ll find a way through this, Bella. I won’t let anything happen to you or our baby.”
Bella trembled at his words, a sense of relief flooding through her. His presence was like a balm to her fractured soul, and for the first time in what felt like forever, she allowed herself to believe that they could make it through this. Together.
Kael pulled her into a tight embrace, his arms wrapping around her protectively. She buried her face against his chest, feeling the steady beat of his heart beneath her cheek. In that moment, she allowed herself to feel the warmth of his love, the promise of his devotion. For once, she didn’t feel so alone.
